Even After My Death -
Chapter 438 - 349: Jiang Ning, Can I Add You on WeChat?
Chapter 438: Chapter 349: Jiang Ning, Can I Add You on WeChat?
After chatting with Song Suyu and the others, Jiang Ning gained a clearer understanding of the anti-human trafficking group these four had established.
Song Suyu and Sha Changnian, the oldest of the group, became volunteers in anti-human trafficking because they themselves were kidnapped as children.
Growing up, they were able to find their families and return to their childhood hometowns with the help of their memories, the anti-human trafficking organization, and the public security forces of the government.
However, they were unlucky. By the time they found their parents, both had passed away, and their siblings had already started new families.
As victims of child abduction, Song Suyu and Sha Changnian harbored a deep hatred for the traffickers and empathized profoundly with the victims of such crimes.
Out of gratitude for those who had assisted them on their journey to find their relatives, Song Suyu and Sha Changnian volunteered to join the anti-trafficking effort and had been committed to it for five or six years.
On the other hand, Qiu Yongfei and Ji Pengjun were younger, both college students in city A.
"I got involved with this group because of Qiu Yongfei," Ji Pengjun began. "We’re bunkmates and classmates. It felt like a meaningful thing to do that could also help others, so we often took advantage of our free time between classes to pose as students doing part-time work for work-study purposes at hospitals when in reality we were gathering evidence."
As for why Qiu Yongfei got involved with this group...
Ji Pengjun turned to look at Qiu Yongfei, who was silent on the side, seemed to want to say something, but appeared hesitant and did not continue.
Jiang Ning gave them a thumbs-up: "You can trust the police with the evidence you’ve gathered. The issue has gained widespread attention now, so there won’t be delays in response like before when evidence was submitted."
"Hahaha, that’s what we were thinking too," Song Suyu laughed heartily. During the past two years, she and Sha Changnian not only collected evidence while undercover at hospitals but also investigated the whereabouts of other traffickers and kidnapped children.
So far, they had amassed quite a bit of evidence but had refrained from handing it over to the police for fear of alerting the targets prematurely.
Furthermore, Song Suyu and Sha Changnian even discovered that hospitals like the maternity hospital in city A, engaged in the falsification of birth certificates and infant trafficking, were not the only ones; there was another in the neighboring district!
After receiving relevant clues, Song Suyu and Sha Changnian had reported it to the local authorities, but nothing came of it subsequently.
The success of Jiang Ning had suddenly reignited hope for the two of them.
"Strike while the iron is hot, we need to go to the public security office now! Hand over all the evidence!" Song Suyu said, eyes shining.
"Sure!" Sha Changnian agreed, his tone utterly firm and resolute.
After enduring for two years, it was finally time to draw their swords!
"Feifei, Xiaojun, you guys free later? Shall we go together?" Song Suyu asked them.
"Mhm," Qiu Yongfei nodded.
Ji Pengjun followed suit: "Okay."
Li Zhichun sighed, looking somewhat disappointed: "I was hoping to invite you guys for a meal."
"Dining can wait, the important matters come first!" Song Suyu said. "After the police have captured all these criminals, it’s likely we’ll be inviting you out to celebrate with a meal."
Upon hearing this, Li Zhichun’s mood lifted: "Alright! I wish you swift and sure success!"
Jiang Ning also extended a lucky blessing.
Ji Pengjun stood next to Qiu Yongfei, incessantly nudging him with his elbow, hinting at something.
Biting his teeth, just as Qiu Yongfei was about to leave the office, he suddenly turned back, walked up to Jiang Ning and asked, "Jiang Ning, may I add you on WeChat?"
Qi Xingzhou, who had been silently tailing Jiang Ning like a shadow, suddenly cast a deep, wary glance at Qiu Yongfei upon hearing this.
It was as if Qiu Yongfei was not just asking for Jiang Ning’s WeChat, but trying to take away something he cherished.
"Sure," Jiang Ning took out her phone.
Nowadays, everyone likes using WeChat; the scan-to-add feature for adding friends is particularly convenient.
Upon hearing Jiang Ning’s consent, Qiu Yongfei’s face lit up with joy, and he quickly took out his own phone to add Jiang Ning as a friend.
"Thank you," he said gratefully, then strode out to join Ji Pengjun, who was waiting outside, to pursue Sha Changnian and Song Suyu.
With the group gone, only Jiang Ning, Qi Xingzhou, and Li Zhichun remained in the office.
Li Zhichun, who had witnessed the whole scene, sighed, "Qiu Yongfei, this kid, probably wants to add you on WeChat because he has something he needs your help with."
"Hmm?" Jiang Ning responded.
Jiang Ning was not a fool, in fact, one could say she was quite perceptive.
She had noticed Ji Pengjun’s subtle actions of nudging Qiu Yongfei with his elbow, just before.
Moreover, when Qiu Yongfei asked to add her on WeChat, his eyes carried nothing but a tentative plea and hope—not a hint of any other intent—this was one of the reasons Jiang Ning agreed to add him.
"This boy, Qiu Yongfei, is quite pitiful," said Li Zhichun, his expression hesitant, as though he wanted to share some of Qiu Yongfei’s backstory with Jiang Ning but feared saying too much might have an adverse effect.
However, in the end, Li Zhichun couldn’t help himself and revealed Qiu Yongfei’s history.
"When Qiu Yongfei was seven, he took his three-year-old sister out to play, and they were targeted by human traffickers. The traffickers initially planned to take both children, but someone noticed them, and since Qiu Yongfei put up a fierce resistance, they abandoned him midway, taking only his sister."
"Even though the police were alerted immediately, the underdeveloped human resources at the time, coupled with the incident happening in a rural town, meant the police arrived too late; the traffickers were long gone by car."
"Qiu Yongfei watched helplessly as his sister was carried away by the traffickers, an image that has ever since been an obstacle in his heart that he can’t get over."
"He blames himself, thinking that if he hadn’t taken his sister out to play, this would have never happened. His sister would not have been taken by the traffickers."
"Qiu Yongfei’s parents have also been searching for the sister all these years, posting many missing persons notices and joining search organizations. Qiu Yongfei has never given up on finding his sister either. Aside from attending classes, he works part-time to save for travel expenses, rushing to any place that has news of his sister to check it out."
Hearing Li Zhichun’s words, Jiang Ning roughly understood.
Qiu Yongfei adding her on WeChat could very well be to seek her help in finding his sister.
No wonder there was such a careful plea in Qiu Yongfei’s expression when he asked to add her earlier.
He must have been afraid she’d refuse.
