Chapter 291: Chapter 291: Heavy Snow Closes the Mountain for Dozens of Days

Ada ultimately didn’t take that bottle of serum. She wasn’t sure what Ethan really wanted.

In any case, Ethan would be staying in this world for a considerable amount of time, giving her enough opportunity to figure out his true intentions and then make the most advantageous decision.

The winter in the small town passed peacefully, and Ethan’s days here were calm as well. Since all the experiments he needed to conduct were already completed, he no longer had to remain in the Mirror Dimension all day and began appearing before everyone more frequently.

Both Annette Birkin and Sherry Birkin had been relatively cold toward him before. Annette’s only concern now was whether Ethan would refuse to fulfill his previous promise. If she couldn’t successfully leave this world and start a new life in another one, she couldn’t imagine what would happen to her here.

To avoid this outcome, once Ethan started appearing more frequently, Annette would occasionally approach him, seemingly using this method to remind him not to forget his promise.

Ethan could roughly guess her intentions and didn’t like this back-and-forth testing at all. So when Annette deliberately lingered in front of him again, he directly stopped her and invited her to sit down and talk.

"We can discuss your future," he said, glancing at Sherry, who was with Annette. "Including your daughter’s future."

Annette seemed a little anxious when she heard Ethan say that. She was very afraid Ethan would tell her he wasn’t taking them with him. Fortunately, Ethan’s next words put her mind at ease.

"I can take you away from here, but I need to explain some things first."

Annette nodded. No matter what, as long as Ethan was willing to take them, that was enough. As for the details, she could listen first before figuring out how to handle them.

Ethan briefly described the world he lived in. He didn’t go into detail, only roughly stating that it was a world mostly covered in seawater with very little land, and that he and some of his companions lived on a ship.

After leaving this world, Annette would first go to the ship he resided on. Only then could he take her to other worlds.

Although Annette was a bit surprised, she didn’t find it particularly strange. A world covered in water wasn’t that bizarre—just a planet where the ocean area greatly exceeded the land area. Earth also had a larger proportion of oceans, but according to Ethan, the situation in his world was even more extreme.

Ethan didn’t clearly explain what that world was like, so Annette just assumed it was an ordinary planet.

"Since I can’t predict the situation in the world I travel to each time, you may need to stay on the ship for a while until I find a suitable world to send you to... Of course, you can also travel with me. If we come across a suitable world, you can stay there."

Once Ethan finished explaining the situation, Annette no longer bothered him, and he could properly enjoy this peaceful time.

"So that’s how it is."

For a moment, Annette didn’t know how to choose. Ethan had clearly told her that when he traveled, it was very likely he would go to a parallel Earth. The era might be slightly different, but the relatively familiar environment would make it easier for her to integrate.

"If nothing unexpected happens, I’ll be going to a parallel universe’s Earth soon."

He had already decided that after returning this time, he would first complete the task Charles had entrusted to him.

After figuring out that his travels weren’t completely random, he knew he had the ability to go to a world where Charles existed.

Back then, he had been concerned about his strength, so he hadn’t set out yet. This time, however, he had gained a lot in the Resident Evil world. After finishing the serums, his strength would improve significantly. His mental power, magic power, and physical fitness would all reach new heights. In this state, he could fulfill that promise.

So the next world he would travel to would definitely be Earth. Considering the era Charles lived in, it could be anywhere within a hundred years from World War II.

Although there was a hundred-year margin of error, the general environment was still relatively close to the ’98 era of the Resident Evil world. Even if there was slight discomfort, it could be quickly adjusted to, making it suitable for Annette to settle down.

However, Ethan didn’t really want to send Annette to that world because it was full of mutants. He wasn’t worried about what they might do to her—he was more worried that Annette, as a biologist, might develop some questionable ideas about the mutant race. If she accidentally created a virus there, leading to another disaster...

"Should I send her to the Marvel world instead?"

The Marvel world was one he had already locked onto. He could go there at any time, but he had designated it as his base of operations. Would sending Annette there cause any issues?

"It shouldn’t be a problem."

Compared to the X-Men world, the Marvel world was more ’inclusive.’ Even without Annette, there were already plenty of high-tech troublemakers. Moreover, the Marvel Universe had more heroes capable of dealing with problems across different fields, so it could handle additional variables.

Annette fell into deep thought. Ethan had presented several options, and she was now seriously considering her decision.

Sherry, who had been quietly sitting next to them, suddenly grew bored and began staring at Ethan with wide eyes.

"Can I learn magic from you?"

Ethan was taken aback. He had originally pulled out a book to read, figuring that since he had explained everything, Annette just needed to let him know her decision later.

He hadn’t expected Sherry, who hadn’t paid much attention to him lately, to suddenly speak up. It seemed like the girl had been mad at him for a while, maybe because Ethan had played the ’bad guy’ role during their first meeting?

But kids were like that. Their tempers came and went quickly. After spending some time together recently, Sherry realized Ethan wasn’t actually a bad person. He had even helped protect her, and her curiosity about magic eventually prompted her to speak up.

"You want to learn magic?"

Sherry nodded, looking full of expectation.

"I see."

Ethan gave it some thought. He had free time anyway. Other than taking potions and training every day, he didn’t have much to do. With the heavy snow expected to block the mountains for several more weeks, teaching Sherry during this time wasn’t a problem.

As for whether she could actually learn or not, Ethan didn’t care. If she could, that meant she had talent. If not, at least it helped pass the time.

Ethan extended his finger. A blue light flickered at his fingertip, leaving trails of sparkling light in the air as he moved. It didn’t take long for him to construct a pattern in mid-air using magic power. After finishing it, he gently tapped the pattern, which floated in front of Sherry, stopping within her reach.

It was a nine-square grid puzzle. A large square was divided into nine sections, eight of which were smaller squares numbered one to eight. However, the numbers were not arranged in the usual order.

"Use your mind to touch this puzzle and control the numbered squares to move."

Sherry, of course, knew how to play it. But the puzzle in front of her didn’t have pictures—just numbers—so it seemed a bit plain. Still, a puzzle entirely made of magic was magical enough. Sherry didn’t complain about Ethan’s lack of artistic talent or visual design.

However, when she reached out to touch the puzzle floating in front of her, the squares didn’t move no matter what she did. She couldn’t even feel anything at all.

"I can’t touch it."

Sherry tried several times without success. Her cheeks puffed up in frustration, and she began to feel like Ethan was messing with her.

"I told you, you have to use your mental power to touch it. Just reaching out won’t move anything."

Ethan originally wanted to demonstrate with mental power alone, but that would look too abstract. Outsiders would just see the puzzle pieces move on their own.

Left with no choice, he extended his finger and combined the movement with his mental power so Sherry could better understand what he meant.

"Focus all your mental power on this puzzle. Establish a connection between your mind and the puzzle. Only then will you be able to move the squares."

Sherry kept trying. The pieces still didn’t move, but after Ethan guided her several times, she finally managed to form some kind of mental connection with the puzzle. She could feel that she had finally "touched" it, unlike before when it felt intangible.

After two hours of effort, Sherry finally managed to shift one square slightly into the empty space.

That seemed to be her limit. At this point, Sherry looked drained, completely losing her earlier enthusiasm.

"Can I not learn magic?"

Sherry felt like she was just stupid. Ethan had been teaching her all afternoon, and she had only managed to move one square a little bit. She felt completely untalented.

"You did very well, much better than I did back then."

Ethan hadn’t actually expected Sherry to successfully move the puzzle pieces. Compared to highly talented mages, her performance might seem average, but compared to his own past self, Sherry was far stronger.

Originally, he just wanted to pass the time, but now he realized that based on the potential Sherry had displayed, she definitely had the ability to learn magic.

"Even if you can’t become a full mage, there’s no problem mastering some simple spells."
