Dig Up the Sun Emperor's Legacy: I Build an Invincible Undead Legion -
Chapter 126: Sinking Feeling
Chapter 126: Sinking Feeling
The three Psionics were mighty grateful to the Redrose Shield Guards who had saved their bacon, hoping against hope that they could all get out of this mess alive.
"By the way, where did these skeleton fellas come from?"
The sand giants and sand claw monster hordes were closing in fast. The three seemed to see their fate of being steamrolled, and their mood actually settled down as they kept shooting the breeze.
"Beats me..."
"Didn’t catch sight of them..."
The three racked their brains, only remembering some thunderous booming sounds before the skeleton fellas showed up.
Just then, they suddenly went bug-eyed:
"The sky... look at the sky!"
Terrifying black shadows were plummeting from the heavens at breakneck speed.
"Boom!"
"Boom!"
"Boom!"
"..."
They slammed into the sand giant and sand claw groups not far off, making earth-rattling explosions as plenty of monsters got flattened on impact.
"Well, I’ll be damned!!!"
The three Psionics’ eyes nearly popped out of their skulls.
The salt sand trembled—the falling objects were actually skeleton monsters radiating pure terror.
They wielded greatswords and giant shields, cutting through the monsters around them like a hot knife through butter.
The powerful sand giants and sand claw monsters looked like helpless babies compared to them.
Even with overwhelming numbers on their side, they couldn’t put a dent in the skeleton monsters.
Salt sand flew every which way. In just a few heartbeats, dozens of monsters bit the dust, turning into piles of salt sand!
The battle was a complete rout!
This spectacle knocked the socks off the three Psionics who were sitting ducks.
"Are... are we seeing things?"
Gal pinched his two companions’ thighs.
"Yeow!!!" x2
"We’re not seeing things!"
All three said in perfect harmony:
"Real as rain!"
Their voices were buzzing with excitement.
These suddenly dropping monsters were obviously buddies of the four skeleton fellas based on looks alone!
They’d come to the rescue!!!
"We’re saved!"
Hope for making it out alive surged in the three Psionics’ hearts.
However... from another direction, the lead sand giants spotted them, flashed wicked grins, and charged straight at them.
Danger was breathing down their necks. The three Psionics felt the grim reaper knocking.
They suddenly realized that even with the skeleton fellas’ buddies tearing through the monster hordes, there were still plenty of monsters that could take a bite out of them—their situation was still touch and go!
"Run for it!"
Like minds thinking alike, the three were about to make a beeline for the four trusty skeleton fellas nearby.
"?"
But when they spun around:
Where the dickens are our trusty skeleton fellas?
The spot beside them was empty as a church on Monday. Following the tracks, they saw the skeleton fellas had charged headfirst into the monster hordes at some point, moving like greased lightning.
Looked like they couldn’t wait to get their hands dirty.
"Skeleton fellas! Hold your horses!"
The three Psionics quickly gave chase.
Their lives now hung entirely on these four skeleton fellas who had pulled their fat out of the fire.
The three knew darn well that in this monster stampede, only these four skeleton fellas had a snowball’s chance of keeping them breathing.
Going toe-to-toe with sand giants alone was a one-way ticket to the bone yard!
So the Redrose Shield Guards ran point, the three Psionics scrambled desperately behind them, and the sand giant hordes gave chase with ground-eating strides...
...
In the sky, Carlos found these three quite entertaining.
"Keep an eye on protecting them."
He had the Shield Guards stay sharp and try not to let these three cash in their chips—he was curious about what brought them here.
The Pure White Salt Pool had always been a place Psionics steered clear of.
Just the deadly threat of moisture vanishing faster than morning dew made most Psionics give it a wide berth, let alone actively hunting sand giants—monsters that were no joke for them to tangle with.
...
The three Psionics finally caught up to the four Redrose Shield Guards, carefully taking cover behind their giant shields.
"The skeleton fellas are absolute juggernauts!"
They watched the skeleton fellas’ hands rise and swords fall.
Mighty sand giants and sand claw monsters turned to salt sand, scattered to the four winds.
Such up-close-and-personal brutal carnage was too much for the three Psionics to wrap their heads around.
Each was fired up, itching to charge up and join these skeleton fellas in teaching these monsters a lesson for daring to corner them.
But what little sense they had left and their badly banged-up bodies told them to sit tight behind the skeleton fellas.
Taking matters into their own hands would probably get them turned into paste by the sand giants!
...
Time marched on quietly.
The numbers of over ten thousand sand giants and sand claws had dropped by a full tenth.
But the Shield Guards showed no signs of wearing down, still coldly cutting monsters down to size.
This made the three Psionics more and more cocky:
"These monsters are all hat and no cattle!"
"Weak as dishwater!"
"Feels like the skeleton fellas aren’t killing fast enough to scratch their itch!"
While constantly keeping tabs on their distance from the skeleton fellas, they actually had time to chew the fat.
However, they didn’t notice that whole armies of sand giants and sand claw monsters weren’t throwing their hats in the ring.
Instead, they’d made their way to the salt mound where the three had originally been, digging trenches around the area...
...
High in the sky, these sand giants’ fishy behavior caught Carlos’s attention.
The salt trenches connected end to end, crisscrossing with each other.
Viewed from above, they faintly formed a complex pattern!
"Unsealing array!"
Carlos pegged it right off the bat.
This half-finished pattern was clearly a special unsealing array.
Combined with the monster hordes’ earlier shenanigans, Carlos put two and two together instantly.
"So the dark mist boss One-Eyed Sand Giant hasn’t busted loose from its seal yet. This is where it’s locked up!"
In Carlos’s earlier figuring, around this time, the One-Eyed Sand Giant dark mist node should have broken free ages ago.
Wouldn’t you know it, while it had broken free, only the underling monster groups were unsealed.
Their boss, the One-Eyed Sand Giant, was still under lock and key and desperately needed its lackeys to break the seal.
"Perfect, I’ll settle the whole kit and caboodle at once."
Carlos’s mind filled with the One-Eyed Sand Giant’s various tricks, feeling sure as shooting.
.....
"Look here, what are those monsters up to?"
Naden, who had sharp eyes, finally spotted something screwy.
His two companions looked over—a bunch of monsters was actually digging salt holes?
Gal looked like he’d swallowed something sour:
"I’ve got a sinking feeling about this..."
Then Eld put voice to what his companions were thinking:
"Whatever they’re cooking up, we can’t let them pull it off!"
The three looked dead set, as if they’d charge out the next second to throw a monkey wrench in the monsters’ digging operation.
But doing so would obviously be signing their own death warrant.
With their pitiful strength, they couldn’t possibly mess with these monsters’ strange goings-on.
So all three looked at the same time at the good fellas beside them!
"Fellas! Look over yonder! Those monsters are hatching some scheme!"
"They must be up to no good doing this!"
"Fella, we gotta stop them from digging salt holes!"
Their voices were urgent and carrying, echoing across the battlefield and traveling far and wide.
But the Shield Guards had no mind to go put a stop to them.
They’d gotten orders from their master not to mess with these salt trenches.
