Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband -
Chapter 85: Playing Into Thane’s Hands
Chapter 85: Playing Into Thane’s Hands
Thane laid Brooke on the bed and turned on the lights, he leaned in close to take a better look at her neck. And although Brooke knew that he was merely checking for injuries, his close proximity made her nervous.
"Mr Grayson I’m fine-"
Thane cut her off, when he marched furiously to the vanity in their bedroom, and pulled out a first aid kit. He circled back to her, sat very gently next to Brooke and began to treat her wounds.
He hesitated for a brief second before touching her neck, "I’m sorry." He whispered, his tone low and agonizing.
Brooke shook her head, devastated, "I’m the one sorry-"
"Brooke. You have nothing to be sorry about. I wasn’t here for you, it is my fault. If I hadn’t come any sooner, you could’ve..." Thane stopped himself from speaking, and focused his attention on taking care of her neck.
Brooke watched him pour his focus and felt an uneven mix of emotions. She felt, worried, upon seeing how pale his complexion was, and the swelling in his eyes. But at the same time, she was happy, happy to see him, and happy he had saved her.
After Thane treated her, he immediately tried calling for a doctor to come over and check her condition, but Brooke managed to pull a stop on his plans.
"Oh my gosh! I’m not that fragile, I told you, I’m built sturdy." She tried to place his mind at ease, but her words had the opposite effect.
He tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and said, "I never wanted you to have any reminisce of your past relationship. I don’t want you thinking that way, it is not okay for that to happen. And I’m not going to let that bastard get off the hook so easily." His tone hardened towards the end, and so did the veins that ripened at the sides of his neck.
Thane got up and made for the door, but Brooke called out to him.
"Mr Grayson, please don’t go."
"I can’t let this slide Brooke, he hurt you, and that’s the one thing I cannot tolerate." He balled his fists.
"No, that’s not what I mean. I haven’t seen you all, I just want to be with you." She confessed, "Just for tonight, can you make me the only one on your mind?"
Her heart raced, she knew that she sounded selfish, but she did not want Thane to get in a fight with the lunatic who hurt her. Especially when he was in such a state, she just did not want to see him get hurt.
Thane halted, unsure if he had heard her right. He looked over his shoulder to see if she would smile and dismiss what she said, but Brooke kept her expression, her worried expression.
He approached her, calmly, and reached to hug her, but stopped, as if to ask for her permission. Brooke responded by wrapping her arms around him in a tight embrace.
Thane gently stroked the back of her head, grinning from ear to ear. "Had I known I’d get this sort of treatment, I might’ve-"
"Do NOT finish that sentence." She snapped at him, making him chuckle, he hugged her tighter, to let her know he was still very much okay and with her.
"I was so worried you know, everyone wouldn’t tell me anything, and I didn’t know what to think. When I saw you passed out in the bathroom, I...I..." She hiccuped, then proceeded to land weak punches on his back, mumbling all sorts of curses under her breath.
"I’m sorry." He apologized, letting her have her way with him.
"You should’ve let me know if you were feeling sick." She scolded in a crying tone.
"I know." He crooned.
"Do you know how crazy it made me?" She went on.
"I know-"
"Don’t ever do something like this again! We’re partners, so let me shoulder some of your burden too. Please." She begged, crying into his embrace.
After a while, Brooke pulled away and looked him in the eye, but she could hardly hold his gaze, not when her eyes were watery.
"Brooke, I’m sorry. I won’t make you ever worry about me again." He promised, his hand still wrapped around her waist.
Brooke sighed. "Then tell me what’s wrong. Gilbert said it was just Dehydration, but I just don’t believe that. I want to know so that I can help you, in anyway I can." She begged, but Thane remained obstinate on the matter.
He raised his hand to her cheek and gently caressed it. "It really was dehydration. Trust me." He spoke softly to her.
Just as he said that, a knock was heard on their bedroom door, "Master Grayson, there is something important we must speak about."
Thane pulled her in by the back of her head, and gave her a quick yet gentle hug. "I’ll be back shortly." He said, then left to speak with Gilbert.
Once he was gone, Brooke hugged her leg to her chest, and let out a frustrated groan. She peeked out of her arm at the door and made a pout.
"How do I trust you when you can’t even be honest with me?" She sighed, recalling what he just said to her.
Her mind flashed back to Gilbert telling her the cause of his health decline was fatigue, and it made her miserable.
"Why can’t you just rely on me? Even a little..." Her voice broke into a gentle whisper, she hugged herself tightly, still feeling Thane’s touch on her body.
Downstairs, Thane was led to where Matthew was forced into waiting. Gilbert had informed him that his brother tried to leave the premises, but was detained in one of the bedrooms.
The second Thane walked into the room, Matthew stood up from the chair he was seating on, letting his older brother sit on it. A way of asking for forgiveness for his rash actions, it was only after seeing his brother’s reaction that he understood who this woman was.
But Thane remained standing, a clear indicator of how angry he was.
"Thane I swear that I did not know she was the woman you-" Matthew tried begging, but Thane cut him off by simply raising his palm to the air.
He turned to Gilbert and said. "Tell the main house that I’ve received the spy they sent to monitor me. And have father know that his spare heir has crossed a line."
Matthew swallowed.
For all his lifetime knowing his older brother, the emotion he only showed was disinterest, and that in itself was a rarity. But right now, seeing him act this way, he was certain there was no sparing him.
The only other time he had seen...no, tasted of his brother’s wrath, was the day he tossed a plastic ring into the garden, just to try and rile him up.
Matthew was pissed off with how much dedication his parents showed to a lifeless corpse and he hated how much Thane did not acknowledge and reverence his existence. To that extent, he stole the ring, the only thing his brother cherished and tossed it away.
Little did he, or anyone expect him to find it in the rain, despite the state of his health condition.
"Of course, master Grayson." Gilbert announced, then rushed to make the call.
Thane diverted his gaze to Matthew’s hands, his glare hardened, when he recalled how those hands had Brooke raised to the wall. He gritted his teeth, thinking up a hundred different ways to break the bones in his brother’s body.
"Matthew, have I ever once raised query to the way you handle things?" Thane asked, taking calculated steps towards his brother.
Out of habit, Matthew raptly answered, "No, brother." In his memories, he recalled his sickly older brother who was always in and out of hospitals for most of his lifetime until the implantation.
With the absence of his brother, and the doting from his parents, he turned out to have a superiority complex towards everyone else.
The only person outside of his parents who could keep him in line was Thane, his scary older brother.
Most people thought that Matthew was the scary Grayson, but those were people who hadn’t seen the true side of his brother.
Thane stood directly in front of his brother, his prickly gaze trained on his hands. "If I were to ask you to compensate her, how would you do it?" He inquired.
Matthew gulped, "I-"
"You have only one chance to answer. So do not mess up." Thane sternly warned.
The pressure he was feeling doubled, Matthew thought up something to say, like to write Brooke a cheque or take her shopping, but he knew that was a stupid answer.
His brother didn’t keep him from leaving the country just for money.
"I’m sorry, it was my mistake." Matthew pleaded. "Please, forgive me." He admitted his defeat.
But Thane did not relent, "I said, how are you going to compensate for the damages you caused?" He hardened his tone, his gaze still pointed at Matthew’s hands.
Matthew noticed where his gaze was pointing and immediately hid his hands behind him. He fell to his knees, his heart beating loudly, as the weight of his poor actions hit him hard.
"I’ll do anything you need brother, anything you ask of me! I beg you! Whatever you need to happen, I will bend everything to make it reality. So please, spare me this one time." He pleaded, unknowingly playing into Thane’s hand.
