Chapter 61: A Car Date
Chapter 61: A Car Date
Brooke stayed and talked with Sadie, keeping her company until it was night fall. Promising to come visit her soon, she left and wheeled herself to the living room, where Thane had been waiting for the past two hours.
"Sorry for wasting time, Sadie was still shaken up and I was trying to calm her down." She apologized, realizing she had made him wait the whole time.
Thane shook his head, "It’s fine Brooke, I was just about to head back home and grab a few of your things."
"My things?" Brooke raised a brow.
"I figured you’d want to spend the night with her, it must be tough for her to get settled in an unfamiliar space. Especially after all she went through." He said, with genuine concern in his voice.
A sharp contrast to Ethan.
Brooke briefly recalled when she was interning at Ethan’s company, when they were still dating at the time. There was a pregnant woman who had come in to work to rectify a mistake her team member had caused.
She had stayed late into the night, working to correct the mishap. Brooke recalled begging Ethan to let the woman go home, but he refused, and insisted that if she did he’d have to deduct from her salary.
She understood that it was due to the carelessness of the whole team and as team leader she bore the responsibility, but she was on leave, and expecting a baby soon.
Brooke never forgot that day, and now with Thane, she could see the stark difference between both men.
"If it isn’t a bother then, you can just take me home and I’ll make it back myself. You’ve been driving all day, I wouldn’t want to impose-"
Thane opened the door for Brooke, cutting her off. "You’re not imposing, I’m doing this because I want to." he said, then wheeled her over to the awaiting car.
Brooke texted Sadie that she was going to get a change of clothes and asked her if she wanted her to pick up anything she might need. Sadie mentioned the basics, some toiletries, underwear and a charger.
"Can we stop to buy some stuff?" Brooke asked, but then realized how selfish she might’ve sounded.
In her current position, she couldn’t go to a crowded place and draw attention to herself, which meant Thane would have to go get them.
"Oh, just forget I said anything-"
"What do you need?" He asked, changing the location on the GPS to the nearest convenience store.
Brooke felt bad as she told him. She still had his jacket on, and the guilt from having him drive her around still lingered in her heart.
"Are you hungry? I could buy you something to eat while I’m inside." Thane offered, taking out his black card from his wallet.
Brooke shook her head, "No, I’m fine."
"Are you sure?" He asked again, closing the car door behind him.
Brooke smiled, "Yes, besides it’s late. I don’t want to add any extra weight." She insisted.
Although she said that, when Thane returned with a smoothie and some chicken nuggets, Brooke couldn’t take her eyes off them. Thane sighed hopelessly and passed the smoothie to her, and placed the nuggets closer towards her.
"Oh, I’m fine really~"
*Rumble*
A sudden growl from her stomach betrayed her. She inwardly cursed her stomach for having no self control whatsoever.
Thane smiled, "Just take it."
"But what about you?" She asked, taking the smoothie out of his hand.
He opened a compartment in his car and took out a bottle of water. "I’ll be fine." He said, taking a chicken nugget.
Brooke sighed, ’I’m such a burden, even after Mr Grayson did so much I stole his smoothie.’ she lamented, taking a sip out of it.
Her eyes widened in shock when she took a taste and found out it was her favorite flavors mixed inside.
What a coincidence!
Brooke was so fixated with the smoothie that she failed to see the triumphant half smile on Thane’s face, when he noticed the child like excitement on hers.
They sat in his car, eating and exchanging brief words, making conversation of anything, while also enjoying each other’s company in silence.
It almost felt like a date...
After eating, which consisted of Brooke, eating more than half of everything, they returned to the mansion, to get her things and freshen up quickly.
Brooke went up first to change her clothes, and was followed swiftly by Hannah, who wore a mischievous grin on her face.
"Miss Brooke what is going on? Why did Master Grayson call ahead and ask me to prepare a change of clothes for you? Where are you two headed this late at night?" She asked, closing the door behind her.
"Hannah it’s not what you’re thinking." Brooke flatly said, taking off the jacket.
"Not what I’m thinking but you’re wearing the boss’s jacket?" She pinched her chin, "Do you think I was born yesterday?"
"You’re impossible." Brooke huffed, masking the huge grin on her face.
It wasn’t what Hannah was implying, but it didn’t mean she didn’t want it to be what Hannah was implying.
Brooke opened the closet and looked for the least revealing thing to wear, something loose that wouldn’t make her feel self conscious around Mr Grayson.
"Miss Brooke," Hannah leaned in. "I packed in some good luck underwear, in red too. It’ll definitely make this night more memorable."
"W-What?!" Brooke’s face flushed bright pink. Wondering why that was even part of her clothes.
"I already told you, that’s not what-" in the middle of her sentence, a knock cut her off. Reflexively, she wheeled herself over to the bed and quickly threw the jacket over her shoulders, then gestured Hannah to go get the door.
Hannah sighed, ’Why are these two so slow? Did nothing really happen?’ she frowned, as she went over to the door. Her frown grew even wider when it was Gilbert at the door.
He stepped in and bowed slightly to Brooke. "Miss Brooke, I’m here on behalf of Mr Grayson. Some urgent work just came up and he’s sent me to inform you he won’t be able to send you back. But in his stead, the driver and I will accompany you." He announced, shutting down Brooke’s excitement.
"Ah, is that so? Thank you for escorting me." Her sadness was impossible to hide.
Hannah was so pissed off she felt like strangling Gilbert, but she knew it wasn’t his fault, nor was it the young master’s. It was just his health, he hadn’t recovered fully and had exerted himself the entire day.
It was bound to happen.
However, she felt bad for Brooke the most, who had no idea of what was happening, and had to force herself to smile, even though she was the unhappiest.
