Chapter 56: An Uncomfortable First Date

The ding from the elevator made Brooke stiffen her shoulders, at the realization that her date was just moments away from happening. The elevator doors parted, and she caught sight of Thane, who had his keys in his hand.

Her hands discreetly pulled down on her dress, which exposed her thighs, she cursed herself for going along with Hannah’s advice and putting on something so revealing.

Thane walked over to Brooke and wheeled her towards the front door, without saying a word to her.

Brooke bit her lower lip, ’This dress is a bit much isn’t it? Is it too late to change?’ she wondered, as they approached the car they would be taking.

"Master Grayson, are you certain you want to drive?" Gilbert asked, rushing behind them.

Brooke blinked twice.

The driver wasn’t coming?

Did that mean....

Her face paled like a ghost. ’It’s just going to be us two?’ she panicked, a hand resting on her pounding chest.

Thane shot Gilbert a harsh glare, warning him not to interfere anymore. Getting the message, his assistant took a step back, "Well just call if you encounter any problems, sir." He said, hoping that things would go well.

After he dismissed his assistant, he helped Brooke into the passenger’s seat, then carefully kept her wheelchair in the back.

Brooke quickly fastened her seatbelt and stole glances at herself through the rear view mirror, placing her loose strands of hair into place.

Once she noticed Thane was done, she straightened her dress one last time, then tried to strike a natural pose.

"Are you okay?" Thane asked, leaning in, "You look pale." He checked his temperature then tried to compare it with hers. But before he could touch her forehead, she nervously slapped his hand away!

"I-I’m fine!" She spat out and quickly looked out the window.

’Hannah.’ she mused, as she only just realized that her cleavage was very visible, and had Mr Grayson gotten any closer he would’ve seen it.

She didn’t want a straight laced man like him thinking she was deliberately trying to seduce him.

Thane didn’t say anything and just started the car and drove out of the area. The tension between them was so thick that it could be cut with a knife.

Brooke felt she had been a bit harsh by slapping his hand away, and wanted to apologize.

"Mr Grayson-"

She got cut off miserably when he pulled over at a cinema, and parked in a reserved parking lot. Brooke blinked twice at the absence of other cars, save for two others.

He got out and carefully took her wheelchair from the back. Brooke noticed how he effortlessly lifted it, she sat on it everyday and knew just how heavy it was.

And yet he kept taking it out.

Just for her convenience.

"May I?" Thane asked, opening the door for her, his hand outstretched as though asking for permission to touch her.

She nodded, a bit flustered by how it almost looked like he was asking her to dance.

A thought she immediately pushed to the back of her mind.

"T-Thank you." She said, when he gently set her on the wheelchair.

He didn’t say a word in response, and simply just wheeled her towards the cinema.

As they reached the entrance, Brooke’s heart skipped a nervous beat. "Um, do you think this is a good idea? I don’t think going to a public place right now is ideal."

Thane responded calmly, "Don’t worry. I’ve made the preparations."

Brooke wondered what he meant by that. However she got her answer when they stepped inside only to have the staff greet them.

"Mister Grayson, Miss Brooke, welcome, we’ve been expecting you." A middle aged man with the tag of manager hanging on his chest announced.

"Please, right this way."

Brooke was too stunned to speak and just let Thane wheel after the manager. Reading her distraught thoughts, Thane explained on the way to the room.

"I pulled a few strings and rented the cinema for us." He said.

"What? That’s a bit much isn’t it?"

"If this is the only way I can take you to watch a movie, then I’d do it without blinking twice." He told her.

What?

Brooke had somehow thought that this was all still a joke until she was wheeled into the empty viewing room.

"Sir, ma’am, please alert us if there is anything that you would like to have during the movie." The manager said with his hands in front of him.

"You can leave us now." Thane said, dismissing him.

Once he was gone, he lowered himself in front of Brooke, "May I?" He asked once more, his hands stretched out in a carry position.

Brooke nodded and Thane lifted her like she was nothing and placed her gently on the chair. He took the seat next to hers, but kept visible space between them.

Once he was seated, the cinema room suddenly went dark, and Brooke flinched, "Ah!" She yelped, reaching for the next closest thing, which happened to be Thane’s arm.

"Brooke! What’s wrong?" He whispered loudly, placing his hand over hers, letting him know he was still there.

"Why did the lights suddenly go out?" She whispered back.

It was the first time that she had been in a cinema. After Cassie hurt her leg, she stayed indoors, trying to get used to using crutches. And even when she finally got used to them, she had been inside for such a long time and lost her confidence to be seen in public.

If it wasn’t for work or errands, Brooke barely left the house.

Even if she left, she avoided crowded places, so she wouldn’t be a bother to others.

"It’s fine. I’m here." He replied in a low tone, gently stroking her hands, reminding her he was right there.

Just as he said that, the screen lit up, and dimly illuminated the room.

The light shone on Thane’s hand on Brooke’s, and when she saw it, it made her heart race.

She immediately pulled away, "I’m sorry-"

"I apologize. I’ve been making you uncomfortable the entire time, haven’t I?" Thane asked all of a sudden, leaving Brooke shook.

"Wait? What?" She blurted out, flustered and confused.
