Chapter 588: Chapter 585: Optical Perception!
"Seventy percent certainty?" the elderly gentleman bloomed with joy, "That’s more than enough! We told them we only had forty percent during the negotiations, but they were still willing to take a gamble!"
"The whole plan still needs to succeed, though. If it doesn’t, we can only secure a deposit of 1500 points. The series of technologies that follow will be lost."
These few diplomats chatted and laughed, in high spirits. A single negotiation had enabled them to acquire technology that others had amassed over tens of thousands of years. How could their mood not be good?
"Well, we can only do our best."
But the burden on Zhang Yuan’s shoulders had just gotten that much heavier.
While humanity had already crossed the threshold into a Fourth-level Civilization, the foundation was still lacking. Aside from Curvature Technology, it was uncertain whether they could surpass the established Third-level Civilizations in other aspects. The development of a civilization is holistic - it’s not enough for spaceships to be fast. Disciplines such as life sciences, Artificial Intelligence, and engineering are also crucial.
Therefore, the more Third-level Civilization technology, the better.
To give a concrete example, the Tos People also had their own auxiliary brain technology, which held some instructional value for humans. The Tos Civilization, desiring optical perception and auxiliary brain technology, would most certainly contribute everything they had... and that would be of great benefit to humanity.
Secondly, this civilization’s electromagnetism was incredibly advanced. People would receive state-of-the-art, weapon-grade technology in this trade.
With these technologies, various ion cannons and electromagnetic guns would be able to reach higher speeds, clearly making it a worthwhile deal...
Once these weaknesses were addressed, the future strides of humanity would be even more solid.
...
Time flew by, year after year.
Twenty years passed in no time.
Inside a small bio-surgery room, several Tos test subjects lay on the operating tables.
The lights were bright, and medical robots performed surgery with precision, implanting tiny chips in their cerebral cortices.
These were the most advanced DX-103 medical robots, with every movement accurate to the micrometer. Before the surgery officially began, the robot’s program would record the brain’s neural distribution in all directions. Then, within seconds, it would simulate the surgery millions of times in a supercomputer, eliminating all sorts of unexpected variables to ensure absolute perfection!
Such ultra-high-precision surgeries were so successful and accurate that they completely surpassed the capabilities of human doctors.
Two hours later, the surgery was completed. Robotic nurses placed the soldiers into hibernation chambers and wheeled them out.
"How is it? How did it go?" asked the leader of the Tos Civilization, slightly anxious, from outside. Beside him was a large dog, its two black eyes whirling, its facial expression somewhat worried.
"The patient is currently under anesthesia and may need a day or two to wake up," said the robot controlled from afar.
"Thank you very much... you’ve worked hard."
There were a total of nine test subjects in this group.
Actually, even if the experiment failed, it wouldn’t be a big deal. The Tos Civilization had long been psychologically prepared. Their cultural system was such that although there was talk of human rights, people were not equal like in humanity. There were certain hierarchal divisions, and the loss of lower-tier individuals wasn’t much of a concern.
However, to reduce diplomatic friction, Zhang Yuan and other researchers still hoped to succeed on the first try.
Using Virtual World Technology to research these Tos People had been approved by the Scientific Council, and the entire process was strictly controlled. After all, it had always been proclaimed that it was a "Brain in a Vat" situation. And in the Virtual World, since the experiment had already been successful, there shouldn’t be too many problems in the real world.
Two days later, the Tos People in the hibernation chambers began to regain consciousness one by one...
A hibernation chamber popped open, and a soldier stood up. He immediately froze.
It was as if he had witnessed a true miracle!
He... could see!
The soldier had a tiny electronic eye on his forehead, right in the center, about the size of a peanut. It used a compound eye mode to match their existing ultrasonic perception. Each species’ sensory system is a little different, so it needed to be customized.
He saw it!!
His head was instantly struck by lightning, as if someone had forcibly carved open a window in his mind. The sensation was so bizarre that he immediately fell to the ground.
"Awooo!" His companion noticed the movement right away.
Many Tos leaders rushed over immediately to inquire about the situation.
"Asbalatala’s!" This guy didn’t answer; he just shouted incoherently, his face burning with excitement!
"Axi!"
He saw it, he saw it, he saw the tuft of dog hair! How marvelous—it turned out his symbiotic partner actually looked like this, and he could clearly see every strand of dog hair!
For him, this was akin to being reborn, a truly miraculous feeling!
Just the act of "seeing" permanently changed his way of cognition. So this was what a "picture" looked like, and what black and white looked like... It was so easy to understand, no need for massive amounts of text to describe it. Wasn’t this a simple matter?!
The Tos People’s perception was the simplest, black and white vision, but even that was too incredible for them!
"Asbalatala tora da!"
Watching this incoherent guy, the Tos Civilization’s leaders didn’t know what to say, they just stood there dazed with excitement. Their species expressed excitement by standing dazedly.
A few of the smarter ones were already notifying the Human side that the experimental subjects had woken up.
Even all the Awakened began to act crazy, shouting loud and walking unsteadily, obviously not yet accustomed to this kind of visual perception.
After hearing about this, a few remote robots entered the room to test the eyesight of the subjects.
"Triangle."
"Circle."
"Square!" The soldier easily identified these shapes, calling out their names despite seeing them for the first time.
Simple images drawn on paper were imperceptible to the Tos People, which was a major pain point for their entire species.
Just think about how inconvenient this pain point could be.
But now, that pain point was gone!
"You answered correctly!" said the remote robot.
"Please go to the outdoor sports field, block out ultrasonic perception, and run the obstacle course."
These large dolphinfishes covered their ears and ran awkwardly, though moving clumsily, they indeed avoided the obstacles.
Many onlooking Tos People stood there dazed, some began to request Humans immediately perform surgery on them, right away, without wanting to delay for a single second!
But they were righteously refused by the robot controlled by Zhang Yuan, jokingly stating that who knew if there were bugs in the system—these were still only test subjects!
Only after this episode did the Tos People feel a weight off their chests, and they promptly paid most of the subsequent payment.
