Chapter 43: Ember’s Affection

Without wearing her shoes, Ember stepped on the ground, and a cold shiver ran through her body as her feet touched the cold surface.

"It’s cold,"

A whisper left her lips, and she quickly took a step forward, intending to close the distance between her and Nell.

The palms of her feet were cold, and the floor was too hard for her bare feet, but she didn’t want to wear her shoes.

Because if she did, it would make a lot of noise and might wake up Nell, who was probably sleeping on the couch.

’I need to be quiet,’

She reminded herself and looked at the screen in front of her.

[Six steps ahead and you will reach the door.]

The system was guiding her, and a faint red arrow was pointing toward the direction she had to walk.

"Thank you,"

Ember was grateful for the system’s help, and without wasting any more time, she moved toward the door, making sure not to make any noise.

’One step... Two steps... Three steps... Four steps...’

She was taking her steps slowly, and it didn’t take long before her hand touched the door knob.

’Here we go,’

A nervous breath left her lips, and a part of her wanted to stop, but her heart urged her to continue.

’I-I want to feel him.’

With that thought, she clutched the handle with both of her hands and slowly began to twist it.

’Slowly... Slowly,’

The handle was turning, and a faint creaking noise could be heard as she twisted it, but that didn’t stop her from continuing.

’Please, let me... before I sleep...’

After a few seconds, the handle was fully twisted, and the door was slightly opened.

A smile bloomed on her face, as her wish was finally going to be granted.

"Now, let’s go."

Without hesitation, she pulled the door toward her, and as soon as it was wide enough, she took a step forward.

Her eyes were shining with excitement, and her lips were curved into a beautiful smile.

She was going to feel the warmth of her husband.

The thing that she wanted the most.

[Take five steps forward and turn to your right. Your husband is lying on the sofa and is asleep.]

Following the system’s instruction, she began to move forward.

Five steps, as the system had told her, and then, she turned her body to the right, however, before she could take another step, her legs stopped moving.

[You have reached your destination.

Your husband is 23 centimeters away from you.

His position: lying on the sofa.

His face is right in front of you while his lower half is facing the opposite side.

One of his hands is on his stomach and the other one is hanging off the sofa.

His eyes are closed, and he is fast asleep.]

’He is asleep. Then, should I?’

As soon as Ember read the system’s description, the words ’feel his warmth’ appeared in her mind and she slowly walked in front of the couch.

And, after taking a deep breath, she began to bend her knees and sat on the ground.

Now, she was right next to her husband, and she could feel his arm that was hanging from the sofa.

Her fingers were touching the back of his palm as she wrapped her arms around his.

Then, she leaned forward and rested her head on the arm.

At that moment, her heart wasn’t beating faster instead it had become very calm and peaceful.

There was no specific reason behind it, but, as soon as she came near her husband, she felt comfortable and a strange feeling enveloped her.

’This... This feeling is so calming,’

Thinking that, a content sigh left her lips and she closed her eyes.

She didn’t want to do anything other than to stay like that.

She felt that if she did something more, the warm and peaceful feeling that was surrounding her heart would vanish, and she didn’t want that.

"Uh..."

Suddenly, her husband’s arm twitched, and a groan left his lips.

"E-Em–"

Ember’s eyes shot open, and her heart almost leaped out of her throat, as she heard the man’s voice.

A sense of panic overwhelmed her, and she could feel her legs trembling.

’Is he awake? Did he notice me?’

Questions and doubts filled her mind, and her fingers unconsciously tightened around the man’s arm.

’System!’ She shouted mentally, and the screen appeared in front of her eyes.

[Don’t worry, Host. Your husband is just dreaming. He is still asleep.]

’Thank God,’

After reading the system’s reply, a sigh of relief left her lips, and her tense body relaxed.

’Is... Is he dreaming about me?’

She wondered, and the thoughts of what Nell was dreaming made her heart flutter.

"Ember..."

Again, the man called her name, and a soft groan left his lips.

This time, however, she wasn’t surprised and a smile bloomed on her face.

’Yes, Nell. I am here.’

Her grip around his arm loosened, and her fingers traced his arm until it reached his hand, which she held gently.

And, then, with a little force, she interlocked her fingers with his, and their palms were pressed together.

It was a simple thing, and a small gesture, but it was enough to make her heart melt.

’I wish the time could freeze right now.’

She prayed in her mind and slowly closed her eyes.

Gradually, her mind became fuzzy, and the sound of the man’s breathing was soothing her heart.

And, after a few seconds she fell asleep.

However, unlike her, Nell was not sleeping peacefully.

In his dream, he was standing in a dark place and a figure drenched in blood was standing in front of him.

This figure was his wife.

Two horns were embedded on her head which split into many parts until it got a tree-like shape.

A pair of bat-like wings was attached to her back, and a long black tail was growing behind her while her skin had completely turned into a deep shade of dark.

Her hand was raised in front of her, in which she was holding a person’s neck, whose lower body was missing.

Blood was gushing out of the body, and its head was hanging lifelessly.

It was a woman, and her body had been torn into two.

"You shouldn’t have touched my husband," The demoness spoke and with a sinister smile, she threw the woman’s body to the ground where more corpses were lying.

Just like the woman, their bodies were also torn; some were missing their arms, some were missing their legs, and some had their necks pulled out of their sockets, while others were cut into many pieces.

Nell wasn’t looking at the corpses, and his gaze was only fixed on the demoness in front of him.

"Em-Ember..."

He called her name as his legs trembled slightly and a feeling of despair was beginning to spread through his heart.
