Chapter 120: Commander Baroy

Princess hesitated momentarily, contemplating the possibility that he might have been sent by Rey.

Eventually, she decided against probing further. Instead, she chose to respond, determined to maintain a facade of strength. "In that case, I suppose I will allow it," she conceded, her inner thoughts revealing her desperate desire to ensure her meeting.

’I will just let it slide. I can’t afford to take the slightest chance of not meeting with him today,’ she thought, a tinge of desperation lingering in her heart.

"Then I shall accompany you to your destination, Princess," he replied, his voice resolute.

"Good grief," Princess groaned, shaking her head in disbelief.

With that, she gracefully stepped into the awaiting carriage, signaling for the two maids to follow suit. Meanwhile, Yujin remained outside.

Princess Diana settled into her seat, her gaze oscillating between the window and the young man standing steadfastly outside the carriage. He bore an expressionless visage, seemingly unfazed by her scrutinizing gaze.

’I wonder why my brother sent him,’ she pondered. ’Could it be because he is the student of the infamous Mage, Xavier? And perhaps he is more than capable enough to protect me,’ she mused, her eyes fixated on the enigmatic young man.

A sudden realization washed over her, prompting her to whisper, ’Could it be...’ A bitter smile materialized on her lips. ’My brother sent him to keep an eye on me?’ she questioned herself, her voice tinged with dread and anguish.

With that poignant thought lingering in her mind, the carriage began its departure from the grand castle, propelling Princess Diana further away from her castle.

.....

As Nell traversed the castle’s hallways in search of Baroy, the esteemed commander of the royal knights, his resolve burned with unwavering determination.

"I must delve into the Zenith Church and uproot the peril that plagues my family," he contemplated, his gaze resolute and unyielding.

Mid-stride, Nell caught sight of two maids engrossed in conversation along his path, prompting him to eavesdrop on their discussion.

"Have you heard?" one of the maids spoke, her voice filled with a sense of urgency.

"About what?" inquired the other, curiosity piqued.

"The Zenith Church was utterly obliterated yesterday," the first maid revealed, her words laced with astonishment. "It is said that a colossal red staff materialized out of thin air and reduced the entire structure to ruins."

"What?!" gasped the second maid, her eyes widening in disbelief.

"Yes, it’s true! And what’s more, the staff remains amidst the wreckage," the first maid divulged, her voice quivering with fear. "They say it descended from the heavens, followed by a sudden surge of lightning."

"From the heavens?!" exclaimed the second maid, her astonishment palpable.

"It appears a single strike was all it took to annihilate the church and its inhabitants. No survivors remain," the first maid divulged grimly.

"No..." the second maid uttered, her voice trembling with anguish.

"Moreover, rumors claim that the Dragon King was responsible for decimating the church." the first maid continued, her words filled with awe and dread.

"The Dragon King?!" both girls exclaimed in unison, their voices trembling with terror.

Nell’s senses heightened as he overheard their conversation, his alarm escalating with each passing word.

’The Zenith Church was annihilated? By a colossal staff crackling with lightning?’ Nell mused, his thoughts entwined with a sense of familiarity. ’Why does it ring a bell?’

Approaching the mesmerized maids, their eyes widening at the sight of his striking countenance, Nell sought their assistance. "Excuse me, could you kindly tell me where I can find Commander Baroy?" he inquired.

The first maid’s gaze turned vacant as she gazed upon his beauty, her words faltering, "...Eh?"

Blushing, the other girl found her heart aflutter, lost in his presence.

Breaking the silence with a snap of his fingers, Nell repeated his question, "Hello, can you hear me?"

"Eh?! Ahhh! Yes! Right! Of course!" the first maid stumbled, her voice filled with apologies. "Commander Baroy should be in the training hall," she continued, her words rushing out. "It’s located at the backside of the castle."

"Thank you very much."

Nell graciously bowed and continued his quest to find Baroy.

After a while, he arrived at the training hall, just as the maid had described. Within, a group of novice soldiers engaged in swordplay, their efforts guided by the commanding voice of Baroy.

"Come on!" Baroy bellowed, his voice resounding through the training area. "How do you expect to face a mage with such pitiful skills?"

The soldiers’ backs stiffened with apprehension, succumbing to the intimidating presence exuded by their commander.

"Even a low-class mage could defeat all of you with a mere flick of their finger. With a single spell, they could end your lives," Baroy’s voice dripped with contempt as he continued his scathing lecture. "Survival requires the ability to face any mage, to confront hordes of monsters, and even fend off bands of rogues. There is no room for complacency, regardless of the circumstances."

"For if we were to falter, the kingdom would descend into ruin," He concluded, his gaze sweeping over each soldier in turn.

His words weighed heavily on his subordinates, their heads bowed in shame. Nell sighed, witnessing their pained expressions, but he remained attentive to Baroy’s lecture.

"Your families, your friends, the people you once held dear... all of them will perish," The voice grew louder with each word, searing into the soldiers’ hearts, their faces etched with anguish and despair.

"Do not mistake this for an easy path, for it shall never be easy. Nothing in this world is handed to you on a silver platter. If it were, there would be no concept of struggle. Every action you take carries consequences that will haunt you sooner or later," Baroy concluded.

’There he goes again. Every time we have a new batch of recruits, he recites the same words,’ a guard standing near Baroy thought, a hint of weariness in his mind.

Suddenly, silence engulfed the training ground as the recruits stood in stoic silence, their faces void of emotion.

’Why did it go so quiet?’ the guard standing near Baroy pondered. ’Oh, shit! I completely forgot! He asked me to interrupt him because he has nothing more to say after this,’ realization dawned upon him as he understood the reason for the abrupt hush.

’What’s he doing?’ Baroy’s mind raced, ’I have nothing else left to say!’

"Well, pardon me, Commander," the guard called out. "I just remembered an important task that requires your attention."

Baroy sighed with relief. ’Thank the heavens,’ he thought, grateful for the interruption.

"Oh... Alright," Baroy acquiesced before continuing, "Carry on with your training. I have an urgent matter to attend to. Proceed without me."

With that, he turned away, only to lock eyes with Nell standing at a distance, observing the unfolding spectacle.

’Why does this whole scenario feel like a meticulously planned performance?’ Nell’s suspicion deepened as he stared at the commander, his doubts intensifying.
