Chapter 114: Arriving at the Capital
As Nellas, Yujin, and Minhe made their way to the bustling Navel City, the hum of activity was impossible to ignore. The streets teemed with a throng of people going about their daily routines, some making their way towards the city gates while others hurried in the opposite direction.
The air was thick with the sound of carts and wagons lumbering down the roads, carrying goods from far-flung towns to their destination within the city walls.
Yujin let out a low whistle as he surveyed the scene. "This place is bigger than I thought it would be," he remarked.
Nellas nodded, his eyes scanning the crowds. "It’s no surprise, given everything that passes through this city."
Minhe, ever the pragmatist, added her own thoughts. "There must be wealthy merchants living here as well, to take advantage of the opportunities presented by such a thriving hub of commerce."
They soon reached the Sunlight Inn, situated in the heart of the city, and were greeted by an elderly man at the entrance.
"Welcome, welcome," he said with a genial smile. "May I have your names, good sirs and madam?"
Nellas stepped forward to introduce themselves. "I am Nellas, and this is my brother, Yujin, and our friend Minhe. We were hoping to rent a room for the night."
The innkeeper nodded, leading them down a hallway to the counter where they could settle their bill. As they paid, they couldn’t help but take in the ambiance of the inn, with its warm hearth and comfortable furnishings.
As the man bid them goodnight and left, Nellas, Yujin, and Minhe made their way to one of the rooms on the upper floor.
Yujin was grinning ear to ear, clearly excited about something. "Wow, this is amazing," Yujin exclaimed, his eyes darting around the room in awe.
Minhe, on the other hand, took a seat on the bed, admiring the beautiful tapestries and ornate furniture. "It’s pretty nice," she said softly.
Suddenly, Yujin piped up, "Brother, can you go and bring dinner for us? My legs are sleeping."
"Sure, I’ll be back soon," Nellas replied, getting off the bed and exiting the room.
As soon as Nellas was out of earshot, Yujin sauntered over to Minhe, a sly grin on his face. "Hey Minhe, You like my brother, right?" he asked, playfully nudging her.
Minhe’s cheeks turned pink, and she shook her head vigorously. "No, I don’t!"
Yujin chuckled, "Oh come on, you do! We both know it!"
Minhe let out a frustrated sigh, "I really don’t, Yujin."
Yujin raised an eyebrow, "Fine, whatever. I thought I could help you get closer to him, but if you’re not interested..."
Suddenly, Minhe called out to Yujin, "Wait, Yujin!"
Yujin’s face lit up with excitement. "Yeah?"
"I wanted to ask... Amm... Hmm," Minhe stuttered, her words trailing off.
Yujin’s mind was racing. He was convinced Minhe was about to confess her feelings for Yeoman. But then Minhe surprised him, "I wanted to ask if you can teach me magic."
"Huh? What?" Yujin exclaimed, completely caught off guard.
Minhe repeated her request, "Will you teach me?"
Yujin’s expression shifted from surprise to confusion, "Uh, yeah, sure, I can teach you."
Minhe beamed at Yujin, "Thank you!"
As Yujin walked away, Minhe’s smile faltered. Unbeknownst to Yujin, Minhe’s true intentions were to learn magic to impress Nell.
Meanwhile, Nellas was leaning against the wall outside the room, eavesdropping on the conversation. He let out a sigh. "I knew Yujin wasn’t up to anything good," he muttered to himself as he walked away.
Yujin’s plan to bring Minhe and Nell together had failed miserably. And little did they know, the real adventure was just beginning.
....
As Arin left his father’s study room, Roland turned to his trusted confidante Cale and asked, "Have you discovered the identity of the intruder?"
Cale nodded. "Yes, they belong to Count Alvin’s family."
A brief smile crossed Roland’s lips. "Well, that gives us a good reason to break off the engagement."
But Cale’s expression remained troubled. "I don’t think Count Alvin sent them. They seemed too obviously suspicious for his taste."
Roland’s smile faded. "Then who could it be?"
Cale’s eyes narrowed in thought. "It must be his younger brother, Richard. He’s always been envious of his brother’s position as Count. He probably sent them to kidnap Arin and use him as a pawn to start a war between Count Alvin and us."
Roland’s jaw clenched at the thought of his son being used as a pawn in someone else’s game. "We can’t let that happen. We need to teach Richard a lesson."
Cale nodded in agreement. "Yes, we do."
Roland’s smile returned, but it was a dangerous one. "Send a letter to Count Alvin regarding the break-up of the engagement. We need to make it clear that we won’t stand for any interference in our affairs."
As Cale left to fulfill his orders, Roland sat back in his chair and began to plot his revenge against Richard. He knew that he would have to act swiftly and decisively to protect his family’s honor and safety.
....
As the sun rose steadily in the sky, Nellas, Yujin, and Minhe continued their journey towards the capital. The carriage trundled along the road, its wheels clattering over rocks and uneven terrain.
Yujin took it upon himself to teach Minhe the basics of magic, and she proved to be a quick learner. With each passing hour, she grew more confident in her abilities, casting spells with increasing ease and finesse.
Despite his pride in her progress, Yujin couldn’t shake off a sense of regret for his failure to bring Minhe closer to his brother. But then a thought struck him.
"Bro, have you noticed how talented Minhe is? She’s pretty cool, don’t you think?"
Nellas’s interest was piqued. "Yeah, she is pretty awesome." But inside his mind he thought ’But is that enough to impress me?’
Minhe blushed at the compliment, feeling a sense of satisfaction knowing that her plan to impress Nellas was working perfectly.
Suddenly, the carriage jolted to a stop, Yujin and Nell quickly peered out of the window to see what was going on.
"We hit something," Nellas muttered, his eyes scanning the area outside.
But what they saw left them speechless - an army of goblins was swarming around the carriage, brandishing their weapons menacingly.
The carriage driver unsheathed his sword, ready to defend his passengers. But Yujin had a different idea.
"Stay here," he told the others, his voice steady as he stepped out of the carriage. "I’ll take care of this."
Without any hesitation, Yujin charged forward, his sword gleaming in the sunlight. The goblins swarmed around him, their weapons clashing against his blade.
But Yujin was like a whirlwind, slicing through the goblins with incredible speed and precision. His movements were fluid and graceful, and it seemed like nothing could stop him.
In no time at all, the battle was over. Yujin returned to the carriage, wiping the sweat from his brow as they started moving again.
Minhe was awestruck by Yujin’s incredible display of strength and skill.
"Wow, Yujin, that was amazing!" she exclaimed. "I had no idea you could fight like that!" She looked at Nell with a twinkling eyes like asking why isn’t he praising his brother.
Yujin just shrugged modestly.
"Yes, he really is great," Nellas replied, smiling. He then turned to Yujin, thinking to himself, ’But to surprise a guy who has killed countless dragons and have made gods kneel before him with just by killing a few goblins is impossible.’
As they approached the capital, they could see the grand palace looming in the distance. But before they could enter, they were stopped by a group of guards, their spears at the ready.
"What’s your business here?" one of them demanded, eyeing them suspiciously.
Yujin stepped forward, his sword at his side while he replied in a calm tone. "We have come to see His Majesty, King Ezal."
The guards at the gate looked at the trio of travelers in confusion and started to laugh at them. Their clothes clearly marked them as commoners, and the idea that they would want to meet the king was absurd.
"That’s a joke, man. What kind of fool do you take me for?" one of the guards scoffed, pointing his finger at their attire. "Nobody gets to meet the king unless they’re royalty or someone important."
The laughter only intensified as Minhe tried to plead with the guards, mentioning Yujin’s connection to the great Xavier.
That was when things took a turn.
Hearing Minhe, the guards started to laugh even more loudly. "You think you can scare us by mentioning Xavier’s name? Huh? You bitch!" The guard cursed at Minhe.
Hearing the guard curse at Minhe, Yujin and Nellas trembled with anger. ’How dare a dog bark at Minhe?’ Yeoman thought.
"Yujin..." He whispered.
Hearing it, without warning, Yujin lifted his hand and a golden aura surrounded the guards’ necks, causing them to levitate in the air. The guards screamed in pain as the pressure from the aura pushed against their throats.
"Keuk! Let... Go..." One of the guards managed to say.
Nell stepped forward, his eyes flashing with rage. "Why should we let you go? Weren’t you the one who barked at Minhe?"
With a swift movement, he took out the dagger from the guard’s waist and told Yujin to drop them.
Yujin opened his fist and the guards dropped on the ground.
Nellas quickly grabbed the guard’s chin and said, "Is this the mouth you cursed Minhe with?"
"Ughh... Sorry... Forgive me...." The guard pleaded for mercy, but Nell was not inclined to let him off the hook so easily. "You must give up on your tongue," he declared.
Minhe, who had been tearful at the thought of violence, spoke up. "It’s okay. You don’t have to go that far because of me."
But Nell corrected her. "I never said I was doing this because of you."
Surprised, Minhe asked, "What do you mean?"
"You’re my friend, and cursing at you is just like cursing at me," he explained. "I’m taking revenge for myself. It has nothing to do with you."
