Chapter 101: Back To The Past (2)

In one of Nellas and Ember’s past lives...

Nellas was standing in the middle of a destroyed landscape.

The big buildings that used to be there were now reduced to piles of rubble.

Green trees that used to surround the place were burnt to ashes, and the air was filled with smoke and dust.

It was a complete disaster.

The sky was dark, and the clouds were covering the sun.

He was surrounded by the ruins of the city, his eyes staring at the horizon.

In front of him, in golden armor, was an army of countless people, levitating just above the ground.

All of their eyes were focused on him, their expressions calm and composed.

"We are here to offer you a proposal,"

A man with blond hair and blue eyes was leading the group, his voice clear and sharp.

"Just give us the girl behind you, and we will spare your life,"

The army’s leader, the blond-haired man, was wearing a silver-colored armor, his eyes piercing and fierce.

"And, why should I do that?" Nellas’ voice echoed throughout the area, his expression calm.

In his right hand, he was holding a black sword that was drenched with red liquid of the people who stood in his way.

But, it wasn’t only others who had gotten hurt.

He was injured too.

His left arm was broken, and under his right lung, there was a hole.

Blood was dripping from the wound, his clothes were stained red.

Even keeping his eyes open was a challenge for him.

The army leader narrowed his eyes and said, "Because the gods want her dead," his tone firm and blazing cold, "So, she has to die."

"Hahaha," Nellas leaned back his head and laughed.

"Fuck the gods," he roared, his eyes burning with rage.

"I don’t care if they want her dead or alive,"

"I will never hand her over to you,"

"She is the one thing that I will not ever lose,"

His eyes were filled with determination, his words laced with venom.

"She is mine," he said, his voice cold and resolute.

"And, only mine,"

"So, come and get her," He took a deep breath, his chest expanding, "If you dare."

"Kill him," the leader’s voice echoed, and the army charged toward him.

The people raised their weapons and flew toward him.

But, he didn’t move.

He was still standing there, his gaze focused.

He didn’t even blink as the people were getting closer, their weapons aimed at him. He was completely unfazed.

He was not afraid, nor was he scared.

Because he knew what it felt like to be alone and helpless.

To be abandoned and forgotten.

To lose everything, and be left behind.

That was the feeling he never wanted to experience again.

And, for that reason alone, he will fight till the end.

For her.

For Ember.

Because he knew that the world could change.

The sky can fall, and the earth can break.

But, the one thing that will always remain, is the feelings he had for her.

He loved her more than anything.

More than his life, and more than his dreams.

And, because of that love, he will do anything to protect her.

Even if it means, sacrificing his own life.

But...

"N-Nell..."

He heard a voice behind him, and a pair of arms wrapped around him.

"Don’t," the voice said, and the grip tightened.

"Please, don’t,"

It was her, Ember.

She was hugging him, her eyes wet and full of tears.

Her crimson hair was disheveled, her face was covered with dirt.

She was the one whom the whole army was after.

The one who was hunted by the gods themselves.

The one who was destined to destroy the world and the gods ruling over it.

But, at that moment, she didn’t care.

She was only worried about Nell.

About him dying.

"N-Nellas," her voice was shaky, her body trembling. "D-don’t, please..."

"Ember," Nell placed his broken left hand over hers, his voice soft.

The army of deadly people that was getting closer to him had been stopped in their tracks at their leader’s words.

"Stop, everyone, stop,"

The people who were flying in the sky stopped, and the people who were on the ground, froze.

"You can’t charge at an enemy when he is distracted," the leader said, his voice echoing.

So, his subordinates stayed still and waited for his next order.

Meanwhile, Nellas and Ember were standing there, their hands entwined.

"It’s not worth it, Nellas," she said, her tears flowing down her cheeks. "My life, it’s not worth yours,"

"Don’t say that," he replied, his tone gentle. "You are worth more than my life,"

"No," she shook her head. "I’m not,"

"Yes, you are," Nell turned his head and looked at her, his gaze soft.

"You are worth everything to me," he said, his words filled with conviction.

"I will never let anyone take you away from me," he concluded.

"But, I am a monster," she whispered, her voice breaking, "They say I will be the reason for the destruction of everything."

"That means nothing to me," He looked into her watery eyes and continued.

"To me, you are my everything." he smiled.

"It doesn’t matter if you are a monster or the cause of the end of the world,"

"All I know is that I love you,"

His voice was gentle and soothing, his words filled with emotions.

"And, that is enough for me,"

"I don’t care what the world says, or what the gods think,"

"I will stand by you, till the very end, even if you turn into a monster and try to destroy the world, I will be by your side,"

"N-Nellas," Ember’s face was covered with tears, her eyes were shining.

After a moment of exchanging glances, Nell kissed her forehead which was stained with dirt.

"So, let go of me, and run toward our house. Go, while I buy you some time," he said, his voice calm.

Ember’s grip loosened, and her hands fell to her sides.

"Good girl," Nellas said and turned around taking one step forward.

Noticing it, the leader of the army, raised his hand, and ordered in a low voice, "Finish him."

The army of people flew toward Nellas again, their swords and spears pointed at him.

He took another step forward, and then, another.

"Come and get me," his words were cold, and his expression was fierce.

The people were closing the distance, and his time was running out.

"Come, I will teach you how to die."

Nellas let out in a low and cold voice, but, before the army could reach him, something unexpected happened.

Something that no one had seen coming.

Squelch!

The sound of someone’s flesh being stabbed could be heard from behind him.

Nellas’ eyes widened in shock as he turned around, and saw Ember standing there, his sword penetrating her body.

Her expression was calm, and her weak smile was filled with sadness.

Her hands were gripping the blade of the sword and blood was dripping from them.

"Why..." That was the only thing Nellas could say, his body was frozen, and his mind was blank.

"Because," Ember said, her voice faint and weak.

"I couldn’t let you die for me," she continued.

"I am not worth it,"

"You are," Nellas whispered.

"You are worth everything," he repeated, his voice shaking.

He tightened his grip on the sword’s handle and pulled it out of her body.

Guh!!!

Ember coughed, and the blood dripped from her mouth.

"No, I’m not," she said, her expression pained.

"I’m not,"

The light in her eyes was dimming, her life slowly leaving her.

"I’m sorry, Nellas," she said, her body swaying.

"I’m sorry, I couldn’t stay with you longer,"

"Ember," Instinctively, Nell grabbed her, his expression full of grief.

And Ember raised her hand to touch his cheek, "Please, forgive me for being selfish if possi..." she said, her voice fading.

"Please, don’t go," Nellas said, his eyes were tearing up.

"Please, don’t leave me,"

But, she had already closed her eyes.

Her body went limp, and she had lost her strength.

She collapsed into his arms, and her body became lifeless.

Nellas was trembling, his hands shaking.

The army was hovering above the ground, their expressions shocked and confused.

"No, no, no, no,"

Nellas kept muttering, his eyes glued to Ember’s unmoving body.

"No, no, no,"

The army of people didn’t know what to do.

The task they came for was complete, but, they didn’t expect this outcome.

That the one who was supposed to be their target would kill herself.

They were stunned, their minds were blank.

But, not for their leader.

He was watching everything calmly, his face blank.

Then, his eyes narrowed, and his expression darkened.

"Everyone, go down and bow before the body," his voice was low, and his words were sharp.
