Chapter 488 - 90
Chapter 488: Chapter 90
"This is the place."
Li Zhiyuan pointed ahead.
It was a construction site that had been cordoned off, seemingly abandoned for quite some time.
At the entrance of the site, there was a security booth with two elderly security guards sitting on stools, each fanning themselves with a palm-leaf fan to cool off.
"Brother Binbin."
Tan Wenbin stepped forward, folding his arms across his chest:
"Your servant is here~"
Li Zhiyuan gestured towards the security booth: "Go and call out to them."
"Your servant obeys~"
Tan Wenbin placed down his backpack full of equipment, and with one hand reaching to the sky and the other supporting the ground, marched off with a resounding gait.
The other three sat down by the roadside.
Yin Meng pulled a bag of pumpkin pies out of his backpack and handed it to Li Zhiyuan.
Li Zhiyuan hesitated to accept, and asked, "Did you make these?"
Yin Meng shook his head: "It’s made by the master chef in the canteen."
Li Zhiyuan took one, bit into it; although it had cooled and lost some of its taste, it was still delicious.
Yin Meng took two more for himself and placed the remaining bag entirely in front of Run Sheng.
Run Sheng nodded, took out an iron box, pulled out a stick of coarse incense, lit it, and began to eat.
He wasn’t actually hungry, having just eaten dinner before coming out, but he knew that this was a preparation before battle.
From the northwest corner of the construction site came the sound of "clang clang", someone had climbed in and was throwing steel bars outside where a tricycle was conveniently parked.
It was quite noisy, Li Zhiyuan could hear it from where they sat quite some distance away, for sure the guards at the security booth would have noticed the noise.
But those two guards, while taking turns puffing on the cigarette provided by Tan Wenbin, continued chatting, showing no intention of intervening.
After all, being of old age and earning so little, they weren’t about to exert themselves over this.
At this moment, a minibus drove by, slowed down towards the gate where the security booth was located.
The two guards stood up immediately, tossed their cigarettes away, and after a brief conversation, let the minibus through.
After gathering information, Tan Wenbin jogged back, Run Sheng shifted a bit to let Tan Wenbin sit between himself and Xiao Yuan.
Yin Meng took out a bottle of water from the bag, unscrewed the cap and passed it over.
Tan Wenbin took a sip of water, then casually took a pumpkin pie from the bag in front of Run Sheng and took a bite, saying:
"Brother Xiao Yuan, the Corpse we’re looking for should be here. This site has been abandoned for months, and strange incidents have been occurring ever since construction began. Accidents were frequent. Then once, for some reason, a swarm of snakes emerged and entered the workers’ resting shed on the site, biting many people. Since then, the site has been completely abandoned till now.
Just now, the minibus that entered, I saw through the window glass that it was filled with Taoists and Monks, likely invited by the big boss of the developer to exorcise the spirits.
Ah, if only we had contacted the big boss earlier, think of how much loss he’s facing from the halted construction. If we could solve the problem, he would definitely be willing to pay us a hefty price.
Unfortunately, our competitors got there first."
Li Zhiyuan stood up: "Then let’s go see how our competitors are doing."
The four packed up their things; the thieves in the northwest corner hadn’t left yet. Since the main gate was too conspicuous, they circled around and climbed over from the south gate.
Inside the construction site, most areas were pitch black, only one corner at the center had lights on, and from afar, candle flames could be seen flickering.
In the central foundation area, water had pooled, forming a pond of unknown depth.
Two offering tables were placed on each side, and although the Monks and Taoists came in one minibus, they were clearly divided, with three Monks and three Taoists each taking care of their own table.
The Monks were chanting scriptures, with solemn religious expressions; the Taoists were sword dancing, exuding an air of mystery.
A man stood in the middle, wearing a blue vest and sporting a slicked-back hairdo, apparently he was responsible for inviting the masters.
At this moment, Slicked-back was smoking, and the rapid flickering of the cigarette end showed he was also forcefully persevering.
The four concealed themselves nearby, hidden under a return home net, and listened for a while. The sword-dancing Taoist switched to chanting scriptures, and the chanting Monks began to circle the tables and strike the gongs.
Tan Wenbin joked: "These competitors, seem like they were just summoned from a funeral troupe."
At this point, everyone understood, these masters were mere pretenders.
The more complicated the preliminary rituals, the longer the preparation, the more it leaned towards mere performance.
"Thud!"
Suddenly, there was a sound from the pond.
The masters immediately stopped their act, and the cigarette fell from Slicked-back’s hand.
Tan Wenbin immediately clutched the Luo Sheng Umbrella close to Li Zhiyuan preparing to protect: "Did the Corpse emerge?"
Run Sheng: "Why is there no smell?"
Li Zhiyuan stated: "It’s people on the other side of the pond intentionally throwing things in, probably the thieves who came in tonight to steal steel, and they are messing with people."
The young man’s hearing was sharp; he heard laughter from the other side of the pond. There were probably three people.
Stealing is one thing, but to stick around to watch the show after stealing.
If this were any other place, it might have been overlooked; but here, there truly exists a Corpse, specifically a Corpse Demon known for confounding people’s minds. Once that thing truly emerges, finding the right direction to escape might become impossible.
The people on the other side, unaware that someone was playing tricks, assumed that the dirty things had truly reacted and were scared out of their wits, promptly taking out countermeasures.
The Monks brought out black dog blood, having plenty in stock, they started pouring it into the pond one basin after another.
Run Sheng: "Pig’s blood."
It was already a dramatic scene for the Monks to be splashing black dog blood, but it turned out they were substituting it with pig’s blood.
But with their actions, for the moment, Li Zhiyuan and his group were somewhat reluctant to say anything further.
