Carrying a Jurassic on me

Chapter 97: Chapter 38 Exposed_1

When Yan Fei came to the cattle farm through the back door with two fish, he purposely crushed the wounds on the fish with his fingers, so no one could tell the bites mark.

"Aunt Yu Mei, look, I just caught these from the river. Do you know how to make braised whole fish or not? Go away, go away, bloody dogs, stay away, this fish is not for you!" Immediately upon entering the cattle farm, Yan Fei started yelling, while simultaneously kicking a few overly eager dogs.

Even though the weather was gradually getting warmer, Old Cheng, and Lin Yumei at the farm were somewhat speechless seeing Yan Fei, bare-chested with fish, early in the morning.

"Sure, I can. You want me to cook both of them? Are you not leaving one for your wife?" Lin Yumei agreed, took the fishes and mysteriously said to Yan Fei: "Your Uncle Baoguo is here, he seems off, he’s waiting for you at the front!"

"What happened? What is he here for?" Yan Fei handed over the fish. "Both of them! We are going to eat one, and cook the other one to take it over at noon."

"He didn’t say why he was here. You should go and see him, he couldn’t find you so he’s waiting for you at the front! It doesn’t seem like good news, you haven’t done anything these days, have you?"

"Then I’ll go check it out, you sort out the fish first!" What Lin Yumei said made Yan Fei feel a bit uneasy, he was wondering what it could be, could it be about the thief who was scared unconscious?

Upon reaching his room, he saw Lin Baoguo sitting there, nodding off with a head full of messy hair.

"Uncle Baoguo, Uncle Baoguo. What did you want when you came looking for me?" After tapping him twice, Lin Baoguo finally wakes up groggy.

"Oh, yeah, I need something. If not, you think I like coming here?" Lin Baoguo seemed a bit more spirited to see Yan Fei. "Tell me, did you go out again last night? The man dumped at the precinct’s entrance yesterday morning, was that your doing?"

"Absolutely not! I’m watching the cattle farm every day now, where would I dare to go!" Yan Fei retorted without thinking.

"Not you? Hmm, where did that motorcycle in the adjoining room come from? The oil on it is not even dry?" Lin Baoguo sneered.

"Bought it. Didn’t you see we ’ve got a new color TV and a flour grinding machine here. Will somebody gift it to me?" Yan Fei responded resolutely but with a triumphant grin inside. He had already prepared a good excuse, and besides, the motorcycle was wiped clean, there would be no oil on it. If there’s any oil left, I locked the door! How can you see it? Don’t think you can fool me just because you’re a cop!

"Then show me the receipt for the motorcycle!"

"Can’t find it. After buying the motorcycle, I rushed to buy the flour grinder, I ran around half the day. When I finally got the grinder, I thought of keeping the receipts together, but couldn’t find it!" Yan Fei replied smoothly.

"Good job! You’ve become clever now, now even lying without batting an eye?" Lin Baoguo was irritated enough to lose sleep. "Do you know the entire county police force was sent out last night? Recently there has been a crackdown on oil theft. The night before, a truckload of crude oil was seized. Do you have any idea how big a deal that is? That truck came from another province, it almost escaped."

Lin Baoguo paused, reached out to pick up the mug next to him, only to remember that he hadn’t poured any tea. Then he went to grab the kettle, only to find it was empty. Dejectedly, he said, "You don’t even have hot water? Well, never mind about that. The fact that the case involves cross-province activities, led by a thief who dared to use a motorcycle to mislead the police, suggests the involvement of an internal-external gang of thieves. And then what? The outlaw who outran the county police cars was sent to our precinct."

Licking his somewhat dry lips, Lin Baoguo concluded, "You don’t have to confess, just wait for the county police to investigate!"

"Whoever wants to investigate is fine, as long as I have no idea! Also, isn’t it your job and do you not get all the credit? Why investigate further? Isn’t it enough to just catch the guy?" Yan Fei was determined not to admit anything.

"I don’t care how tough you act, now open the door, I want to see your new motorcycle." Lin Baoguo stood up, making a move to go look at the next room.

"A newly-purchased one, what if you fancy a ride? What if you want to borrow it for a few days, and I don’t agree, that could strain our relationship!" Yan Fei was not about to let him see it. A used motorcycle and a newly purchased one are definitely not the same, if he inspected it, he would end up giving himself away!

"You!" Lin Baoguo thumped back down on his chair. "Forget it. You don’t even trap rabbits anymore, what are you running out for? That thief from the previous village, you caught him, didn’t you? You thought no one knew because you left? Once they questioned him at the police station, everything was clear! You better be careful, catching thieves is a police matter. What if something happens to you?"

"Heh heh, I sleep soundly every night until dawn, I’m definitely not the one you’re describing." Yan Fei realized that he probably couldn’t get away with it, so he simply started playing dumb.

"Enough. You can count this as another merit on your part. This time, the oil thief is actually the head of a gang, and a really audacious one at that. He rode a motorcycle to divert the police, trying to let the oil truck slip away. Luckily, they all got caught." Lin Baoguo paused for a moment before curiously asking, "By the way, what exactly did you do to him? According to what I heard, this guy is a notorious figure in the neighboring village. When he got to our station, before anyone could question him, he spilled everything. Even detailed those villagers who usually helped him with his oil theft. The county police thought we got the information by torturing him!"

"Heh heh..." Yan Fei snickered, though he stopped adamantly denying it, he resolutely refused to confess.

"Forget it, just be careful in the future! This guy is practically a write-off now. Anyone who talks to him loudly ends up with him crying out about ghosts and monsters. Let’s wait to see how the station reports it first, and I warn you again to stop running around aimlessly. Otherwise, I will lodge a complaint and have your mother put on unpaid leave to live in your yard. You got lucky this time, they found two shotguns at his house. He happened to not have brought it with him when he was drawing the police away. Ever thought about what would happen if he had brought it with him?"

"I wasn’t running around the place without purpose. By the way, Uncle Baoguo, did you have dinner yet? I caught two fish last night, so why don’t you have dinner here?"

"How did you catch them? You didn’t even mention it, and now I realize I’m starving! Let’s go and eat. I’ve been working all day and all night without a proper meal. I’m so hungry I can’t even stand straight!" As soon as Lin Baoguo heard this, he immediately stood up. He was really famished.

"I caught them in the river. Where else could I have caught them?" Yan Fei casually replied.

"You started going into the river during this weather, and you even went at night. Are you made of iron?" Hearing that he’d been in the river at night made Lin Baoguo a bit anxious.

"The weather’s already warm. What’s there to be afraid of?" Yan Fei replied nonchalantly.

The two arrived at the backyard while chatting. Lin Yumei had just finished cleaning the fish.

"Good job, Yan Fei. These two fish are pretty big, but... wait, let me have a closer look at this fish first!" Upon seeing the fish, Lin Baoguo gave a compliment before asking Lin Yumei, who was about to take the fish into the house, to stop.

"What’s wrong?" Yan Fei asked in a puzzled tone as he watched Lin Baoguo examining the fish closely.

Lin Baoguo ignored him, continuing to examine the fish and opening up its gills to check it out. He even smelled it before handing it back, "This carp seems to be from West River. Its color doesn’t look right, but the grass carp is fine. I’m sure it didn’t come from West River."

"I caught it from the east side. I never even went to the west side!" Only then did Yan Fei and Lin Yumei understand his concern: he was worried these two fish were from West River.

"Can’t fish from West River swim over there? It’s better to be careful. The water in West River looks strange, so it’s better not to eat anything from there if you can avoid it. It’s not like we’re lacking in food!" warned Lin Baoguo in his experienced voice, implying not to eat fish from West River.

"People really bring calamity onto themselves! A perfectly good river that used to be navigable, now look what it’s become! Yan Fei, do you still want this carp?" Lin Yumei said as she was cleaning the fish.

"Not anymore!" Yan Fei was really frustrated! Of the two fish he caught, one couldn’t be eaten. Plus, this carp was his first ’prey’ since he transformed into a small crocodile.

However, he understood which matters were urgent and which were not. West River had been polluted for many years by the paper factory in the upstream county. He knew from a young age that the water was bad, not suitable for bathing, and the fish not fit for eating.

But some people still ate it. If people insisted on eating it, nobody could do anything about it. Every summer when the water level rose and the riverbed stirred up the muck, all the fish in the entire river would be poisoned and float to the surface. Anyone with a net could catch them easily. There were always people trying to benefit from this and eat some fish.

Everyone in town, young and old, understood this issue, but there was nothing they could do. It’s said that Tanghe County had even sued the adjacent county over the paper factory, but to no avail.
