Chapter 96: Chapter 37 Little Crocodile Swimming in Water_1
After catching a thief the night before, Yan Fei became intrigued by that neighboring village capable of stealing oil, so he purposely went to check it out at night.
What he saw gave him quite a start.
Police cars blaring their sirens patrolled the main road to the east of the county every now and then. Furthermore, there were armed police with rifles and helmets. Many cars were lined up by the roadside for inspection. Yan Fei was seeing so many trucks lined up in a queue for the first time. It was such a spectacular scene!
Following the main road eastward, upon reaching the town in the neighboring village, he found that every intersection was manned by police. More police patrol jeeps and tri-cycles were constantly moving in and out of the area.
At the periphery intersections, there were groups of people with batons who, even though they were not police, were helping man the intersections. Basically, a huge dragnet was cast on this entire region. It seemed that not even a bird, being the only creature able to turn into a human, dared to fly too low, and only circled stealthily at high altitudes.
In the nearby villages, dogs were barking intermittently. Occasionally a police car would drive into a village, a group of police quickly alight, dart into several houses, drag out a few people, throw them into the car, and swiftly depart.
Such an imposing sight!
Yan Fei was deeply excited, wishing he could be one of those armed policemen, bursting into each household to arrest people.
Occasionally there were ones trying to escape over the wall, but they would be thrown on the floor before even making it out of the village, causing a frenzy of barking dogs in the village.
Yan Fei kept watching until late at night. As various police units returned to their stations and the crowds helping the police at the intersections also departed, he reluctantly flew back to the cattle farm.
He mood was off for the night, so he metamorphosed into a small alligator, aimlessly swimming about in Spring Pool.
This was no fun at all!
Even the refreshing spring water failed to calm Yan Fei down. Being able to witness the police launching such a large-scale operation to apprehend criminals was far more thrilling than anything he had seen on the TV. That experience had indeed given Yan Fei quite a thrilling stimulation.
After swimming about for a while, Yan Fei decided to try out the river near the cattle farm.
The Sancha River - where three rivers converge - not only has a wide river surface but also deep waters. Additionally, there are undercurrents in the river after the confluence of three rivers which normally deters people from fishing here.
Upon entering the water, the small Sarcosuchus quickly found that going a little deeper rendered its eyes almost useless.
For Yan Fei, while not used to it, it wasn’t unacceptable.
Ever since he turned into a Compsognathus, he had learned to use his sense of smell and hearing to locate lurking hares in his vicinity.
When he became a Pterosaur and cinerous Vulture, day in day out he got used to sensing the air currents while flying mid-air. All this prior training mattered at this very moment.
Moreover, Yan Fei quickly realized that Sarcosuchus’ big nose seemed to be particularly useful in the water. Although there was robust armor all over his body, just using his nose, he was able to accurately perceive the direction of water flow. He could even sense nearby small fish swimming around. When a fish was frightened and rushed past him, he was even able to discern through the run-off flow caused by the fish and that of the inherent water flow.
Based on all his experience of playing in the water during the summer for many years, Yan Fei quickly mastered how to swim in the dark as a Sarcosuchus.
Although his tail was not nimble enough yet, and he could not naturally swim, hunt or evade danger as a real Sarcosuchus would do from birth, this was, after all, just a small inland freshwater river. Yan Fei knew exactly what lived within and with the protection of scales, a half-meter long small alligator was already a topmost carnivorous creature in the river, so there was nothing for him to fear.
Gradually he began to get used to swimming using only his tail. Do not think that this is simple. After all, previously he had to use his four limbs mostly. When in water, it is best that the small alligator’s limbs stay faithfully by its sides, otherwise it would unnecessarily increase the water’s resistance against his body. .
Once he mastered the trick to maneuvering in the water, Yan Fei’s restlessness resurfaced.
He quickly arrived at a backwater bay by the riverbank. Such locations usually have the most fish, with almost every sort of creature hiding within the aquatic plants at the riverbed. Crabs, shrimps, and various types of fish all favor locations like these.
Yan Fei imitated the hunting methods of the crocodiles he had seen on the show ’Animal World,’ lying still at the bottom of the water, ready to play a waiting game.
In fact, this decision proved quite foolish. After lying in wait for a long time, he didn’t spot any worthwhile fish. Not until he started feeling chilly did he crawl ashore, took a few sips of the bone wine he had prepared, and only returned to the water when he started feeling warm again.
This time in the water, he didn’t just wait patiently. Many fish usually hide in the water to rest at night, so he directly jumped in the water and started swimming frantically.
He quickly noticed that the fish around him were shocked. When a panicked fish was not far from him, he suddenly swished his tail and rushed out, snapping his mouth around it.
Peh!
He bit into nothing.
He could clearly sense that the water flow was due to a fish, but when he dashed towards it, he didn’t get a bite, and he used too much force, causing a slight ache in his upper and lower jaw.
Yan Fei still had the patience to continue waiting, not only for tomorrow’s fish feast but also for the constant stream of fresh big fish in the future. Living alongside the Sancha River and not eating fish would simply be letting himself down.
Haha!
Once again, he felt a violent struggle in his mouth. Yan Fei knew this fish was not going to be small. Biting down hard and refusing to let go, he initially wanted to quickly drag it ashore, but then found himself being swayed left and right by it, unable to move at all.
There was no way he could release his hold at this point; the bite power of the alligator was not just for show. Letting his body be swayed back and forth in the water by the struggling fish, Yan Fei stubbornly held on, allowing his prey to struggle as much as it wanted.
Anyway, it wouldn’t be able to struggle much longer. As expected, it didn’t take long before the fish struggled less fiercely.
Dragging the fish ashore, Yan Fei stood naked on the riverbank, looking at the still flopping big carp at his feet, his mouth twisted into a smile.
It’s so big, over a foot long, and chubby, weighing around six or seven catties.
His technique wasn’t skilled enough, his bite was a bit off. But luckily, the Sarcosuchus’s bite force was good, and the end of the tail had almost been bitten off by him.
Taking the fish and slamming it hard on the shore, putting it out of its misery before its death, Yan Fei went back into the water.
Once more, too excited, failure!
Continuing, this one is too small. Unlucky little fish, it’s really bad luck. You’re so small, why do you swim so excitedly? The water flow you stirred up made me think you were a big fish!
Swimming to the surface, he swallowed the little fish directly. No wasting, right!
Soon he had another big fish in his sights.
More precisely, sensed. This big fish was nonchalantly hiding in the grass, even when the little fish around were startled, it continued to hide in the water grass. Only when it moved its body in the water grass, creating a different flow compared to the gentle natural flow of the river underneath, could Yan Fei detect it. He wouldn’t have sensed it if he hadn’t swum past when it moved its body!
Yan Fei wasn’t really a dumb crocodile. He didn’t charge in directly, but feigned ignorance and swam in a circle before coming back by feeling.
As he slowly approached the cluster of water grass, the big fish hiding inside became uneasy. The moment it decided to break out to escape, Yan Fei made his ambush.
The bite was off again!
He obviously felt that the place he bit had thin flesh, and estimated that he had bitten the tail again.
The big fish struggled a few times, surprisingly escaped, but also got part of its tail bitten off. The injured fish swam crookedly to escape and tried to dart into the water grass again. However, to Yan Fei, the injured fish was like a firefly in the darkness, and he quickly caught up to it without any effort, and bit it again.
Soon after, this fish, slightly bigger than the carp he caught earlier, was thrown ashore too.
This was a fish commonly known as a grass carp by locals. It had more bones than a carp, and its taste was not as good either, so Yan Fei was a bit dissatisfied.
Fortunately, both fishes were quite big. If they were any smaller, it wouldn’t have been enough. Yan Fei hated having to pick bones while eating fish the most.
It’s a shame that his alligator body hadn’t grown much. If it was bigger, he could have gone to the reservoir to catch even larger fish.
By now, it was starting to get light. Even though no one would come around, Yan Fei decided not to continue hunting. Two fish were enough. Everyone in the farm could eat one, and the other could be stewed and sent to Xu Xiaoyan.
