Chapter 90: Chapter 31: Build a Big Yard_1

Pang Fa brought the latest news about the Si Family’s Brothers.

Actually, Ma Yongming and Pang Fa went together to negotiate the terms. Even though he was rescued, in the eyes of the Si Family’s Brothers, Yan Fei was a madman. Offending such a person was simply not cost-effective.

As the saying goes, the soft fear the hard, the hard fear the unpredictable, and the unpredictable fear those who don’t care about their lives. From the very beginning, nine out of ten hooligans have gotten by on the boast that they don’t care about their own lives, but when they meet someone who truly doesn’t care about their lives, they’re frightened.

Yan Fei and his companion murmured for a while and, from the look on Pang Fa’s face, Yan Fei knew their negotiation terms with the Si Family’s Brothers must have been hard on the brothers.

Anyway, the Si Family’s Brothers admitted their defeat, and Yan Fei also got this piece of land. As for the rest, the two people were mysterious, and no one knew clearly what they were up to.

Then, Yan Fei began to discuss with Pang Fa whether they should buy all the surrounding land and build a large courtyard. Even if they couldn’t build it all at once, they could at least occupy the land and avoid trouble later.

"This matter is easy to handle, there’s no one around here anyway. Even if someone wants to come, they would think twice upon seeing your cow farm here. Nobody wants to live in a place that smells like cow dung all day," laughed Pang Fa. "Besides, after all the fuss you’ve caused, no one will want to be your neighbor. I’ll take care of this for you. It’s very simple. You just tell me how much money you want to spend. I’ll get started tomorrow during work hours. I expect it to be done within a couple of days."

"Alright, when the puppies open their eyes, I’ll let you choose first," Yan Fei said, and they exchanged a couple of scheming smiles.

"So, are you planning to build a house right away after this is done?"

"No need for a big fuss. Just build a courtyard wall, set up a few cowsheds around it, and I can let my cows graze on the wheat growing on this land," said Yan Fei, ever the prodigal. "Once I have more money, I’ll build it up little by little. The current houses will act as fodder sheds, and I can keep cows all around. Over by the main gate, I’ll build new houses for people to live in."

"That works too. You can do whatever you like, as long as you have the money. You could even build a tower if you want," responded Pang Fa, indifferent.

"I wouldn’t mind building a tower, but I also want to buy more cows and I’m afraid I won’t have enough money. Ah, I wish I could collect tolls at the bridge," sighed Yan Fei. Most people going from Sancha River to the county town have to cross a bridge and pay a toll. Many of the villagers going to the county town market leave their tractors on one side of the bridge and then walk across.

"Give it a shot, give it a shot. That’s what Niu Laosan was thinking, and he still hasn’t come out yet!" Pang Fa burst into hearty laughter.

After Pang Fa left, Yan Fei started to wander around.

Except for the wheat field in front, the rest of the places had all sorts of uneven terrain. With nothing else to do and the land not yet in his hands, Yan Fei began to level the land. When Xu Xiaoyan came to find him, she was confused about what he was doing.

Yan Fei pointed at a large piece of land and declared with great bravery, "This is all going to be my territory soon. When I raise hundreds of cows here, I will be a professional cow farmer!"

News travels fast in the small town. In the afternoon, Yan Fei’s classmates, Yang Qian and Jiao Bing, and Xie Dang’en all came. They lived in the town and heard about Yan Fei’s cow farm; they came to find out what was happening.

A group of people chatted and laughed. Then it was time for everyone to go about their own business.

Xu Xiaoyan took a bus to the county town first. Then Yang Qian and others went to school while Yan Fei continued to level his land.

About a month passed quickly in the hustle and bustle. When Yan Fei’s parents returned, they were almost speechless with shock at the sight of their son’s large piece of land and the large enclosing wall around it.

They knew about Yan Fei raising cows, but as the son was not relying on their financial support and they were busy after the fertilizer factory reopened post-holidays, they didn’t think about discussing it with their son.

By the time they thought about it, there was no need for discussion.

What they didn’t expect was that in so little time, Yan Fei’s small cow farm had expanded so much. While the cowsheds were still empty, they could see that Yan Fei was determined to go all out. It was only a matter of time before he filled the cowsheds with cows.

Yan Fei bought all the surrounding land, which was so cheap that it was like getting it for free. People were afraid that Pang Fa would say no. When Pang Fa first went empty-handed, people began to divide plots for him and process the paperwork even before he had paid. They even said the more he bought, the cheaper it would be. They didn’t even mention the few crooked trees on the land, which were included in the deal.

As a result, the place was too large. Yan Fei felt he didn’t need such a large place. Currently, the cow farm has only expanded to the West River side. A large piece of land on the east side is still empty!

On the side of the West River close to the town, there are levees built with large stones. Without even needing to dig a foundation, he could build a wall on top of the levees, erect sheds, and have the high levees at the back for security.

The section of land by the road was shielded by a tall wall, and a few tile-roofed houses were built. Since there were not many people around at the moment, Yan Fei planned to live there himself.

Since he planned to expand later, the walls to the east and the rear end were hollow, saving him quite a bit of money on bricks!

Now, besides discussing academic matters with Yan Fei, the couple could not intervene in anything else.

"Look at this cow, Brother Chao, come over and tell something about the cow to my parents. When I show my parents the small family business I own, I can’t help but feel proud." Yan Fei showed his parents around with joy.

Ma Chao ran over swiftly and began to narrate the miraculous transformation of the cow.

This was the experimental cow. Although it seemed a bit behind compared to the other cows, don’t forget that this cow was the youngest, lacking a few months compared to the others!

Ma Chao had a small notebook in hand as he explained, leaving Yan Fei’s parents dumbfounded.

"Before long, all the other cows here will be like this one. We began adding a secret formula to all the cows’ feeds half a month ago. Oh, and there are a few pigs too. Look how big they’ve grown in just a few months! Both the cows and pigs are growing much faster than before and eat more as well. I estimate that their time to market will be significantly shortened." Ma Chao concluded.

"What kind of secret formula?" Yanfei’s mom asked curiously.

"It’s something Yan Fei came up with after researching with books for several days. He said it’s the ranch’s secret formula from now on and forbids us from mentioning it casually." Ma Chao said mysteriously.

"He didn’t say it couldn’t be told to my parents!" Yan Fei said ruefully. "It’s nothing special, actually. The main ingredient is bone meal. I learned from books that once specially processed, it works exceptionally well."

"Aww! My son is incredible, he has even learned how to create a secret formula for raising cattle. Since it’s a secret formula, I won’t ask any more questions, and you mustn’t tell anyone either. Keep it to yourself, understand?" Yanfei’s mom said joyfully.

"Not bad, not bad, learning from books, lifelong learning. But you have to be cautious with these secret formula experiments, and don’t forget to continue studying. You can’t skip school, you know?" Yanfei’s father was just making conversation!

"Don’t worry! Could I possibly fall behind in school?" It was bluffing. For nearly a month, he had been building a wall around the yard and setting up the cowshed, as well as working with bone meal, so days when he could actually attend school were few and far between.

However, in front of his parents, he had no choice but to say so, even though his parents knew he probably didn’t have much time for school. What mattered most was that his attitude was good.

"Raising calves is slow. Yan Fei, have you been to other cattle farms? I read in the newspaper that now, cattle farms are using scientific fattening methods to make cows gain weight rapidly, thereby significantly increasing the benefits of cattle farms. I brought the newspaper for you to read later." Yanfei’s father was a well-read person among his peers. It seems that even though he didn’t say much, he was still thinking about his son’s little business.

"Fattening?" Yan Fei muttered a few words. "OK, I’ll look into it! I think I’ve read about it in a book, but I didn’t pay much attention."

"Fattening means gaining weight. In simple terms, considering the same kind of cow, can a thin and a fat one be the same? Have you ever calculated how much more meat you can get? Buying ordinary farmers’ cattle back for scientific feeding in your cattle farm, aiming to gain weight rapidly in a few months, then selling it for slaughter, wouldn’t this earn more money faster than raising from a calf?" Yanfei’s father had clearly put some thought into this and spoke with much conviction.

Hearing this, Yan Fei’s eyes lit up as he understood the rationale.

Why hadn’t he thought about such a simple matter before? A cow, being such a large animal, whether it’s a little fatter or thinner, it could be a matter of a few hundred catties worth of meat.

But it wasn’t too late to think about it now. Prior to this, he hadn’t understood the concept of scientific feeding, not even to mention now. It’s only because of the remarkable effectiveness of the dinosaur bone meal that enabled the possibility of this fattening technique at his cattle farm.

When Yanfei’s parents were leaving, Yan Fei presented them with another jar of medicinal wine.

After his grandfather tried the medicinal wine last time and said it was good, Yan Fei asked Ma Chao to bring two more jars, which were now ready.

Although buying wine did cost some money, having the relationship with Ma Chao and furthermore using the wine dregs to feed cattle meant the cost was almost equal to home brewing. It was as though Ma Chao’s family was distilling wine for him.

However, Ma Chao’s father was getting old and probably wouldn’t be able to brew much longer.
