Chapter 572: Chapter 242: Got a Car but No Driver_1
Because of the pleasant conversation with Secretary Jiao, Yan Fei sincerely invited him to stay for dinner. However, the secretary just laughed and declined with the excuse, saying there were too many guests. He even refused when Yan Fei told him that the beef was from his own slaughtering two nights before, and the fish were caught from the river, all without any cost.
In the end, Yan Fei sent him off with small gifts, offering a jar of wine and a bottle of honey.
While the county officials had left, the township officials had to stay and help maintain order, encouraging the onlookers to dissipate.
There were a lot of people, resembling a festival. When the firecrackers at the ranch gate exploded, a few thousand people were present. The town was virtually empty.
It was mainly due to the two Golden Eagles that had garnered attention. When they took to the sky, people from a distance initially thought they were fetching kites. Once they realized otherwise, the town’s people poured out all at once, putting the local leaders on edge, afraid of potential commotion.
After the crowd left, Old Pan and Lin Baoguo came over, handing Yan Fei some money: "This is the drink money Secretary Jiao left for you. He was afraid you wouldn’t accept it, so he told us to give it to you after he left."
Yan Fei didn’t stand on ceremony and accepted the money: "He’s a good man, but he should’ve just accepted my gifts without paying. That’s not the proper way!"
The group stared incredulously at Yan Fei. Before, he had complained about Secretary Jiao’s blessing visit, fearing it would impede his work. Now that he found it to his taste, he would certainly accept gifts, and if money was given, it would be considered inappropriate.
Even Yan Fei’s grandfather commented: "The Secretary is genuinely nice. He gave us money even when taking some of our homemade things."
Finally, Yanfei’s father asked: "What’s with the truck left behind? Didn’t see anyone explaining its purpose?"
Yan Fei murmured: "He must’ve felt too embarrassed to show off his achievement!"
Yanfei’s mom immediately chased for an explanation: "What do you mean by feeling too embarrassed to show off? What’s embarrassing about giving us a big truck?"
It seemed that everyone knew the truck’s origin except the parents.
"You know we’ve hired some new people on the farm, right? Those few over there that look dodgy, they used to have a shady past too. We found out they were stealing oil from the village and secretly reported it. The county gave us this truck as a reward. We provided all the information, so of course they felt embarrassed to boast about it!" Yan Fei lied.
He needed to quickly gloss over this topic with an excuse before they realized the truth. It wouldn’t matter if his parents knew about anything else, but this concern was different. If they found out, they might worry and monitor him all the time.
Although Yan Fei had murmured earlier that they felt embarrassed to show off their achievement, in his heart, he felt quite pleased. Look at Secretary Jiao, so gracious! Even though the truck was seized by Yan Fei himself, Secretary Jiao delivered it without uttering a single unnecessary word. This probably counted as an unspoken understanding.
Those who stayed for lunch were close relatives and friends, like Old Pan, Ma Yongming, and Pang Fa. The highlight was the beef kept from two nights before.
Yan Fei had kept the ordinary-quality beef, anticipating a lot of people for lunch. Turned out, there were fewer people than expected. Lunchtime had almost passed by the end of their busy morning, and everyone, including the cattle-herders and other local officials, declined to stay for lunch.
Some who brought gifts left as well. They were too considerate, afraid that Yan Fei couldn’t accommodate everyone while being so busy. He did actually plan for the mass numbers, able to whip up a feast with plenty of fish and meat. But when everyone left, there was nothing he could do, right?
As it turned out, they couldn’t finish all the beef. Luckily, Pang Fa was around. He could take the leftovers after lunch and continue his itinerant vending.
With his parents around, Yan Fei didn’t need to entertain others. He discussed selling the beef with Pang Fa, and planned the house construction with Ma Yongming, mentioning that if any building materials were needed, they could now be transported with the new truck just by asking.
While he was speaking eagerly, Lin Baoguo interjected: "Now that you have a big truck, do you have a driver?"
"That’s me!" Yan Fei replied proudly. "It’s easy, I learned in a short while. I learned it on this very truck. It is familiar..."
"Then you can be the driver!" Lin Baoguo sneered.
"What?" Yan Fei finally caught on.
He could drive but he couldn’t afford to be a full-time driver! He was busy all day. They had been so occupied before lunch and he had just started to take a breather. If he had to become a truck driver now, only a doppelganger could manage that.
After thinking for a while, he called out to Heizi: "Look, who in our farm would be interested in learning truck driving? I’ll pay the tuition fee. After they learn, they can drive for the farm."
Heizi instantly replied: "Old Ou! He’s the steady one. Do you dare to let those who are as jumpy as monkeys drive a truck?"
Lin Baoguo supplemented after seeing Yan Fei arranged it: "They don’t need to learn for too long. First, they can learn some basic theory, then practice driving this truck here. They can get a license in a month. I can ask Xiao Xiang here to help in a few days, teaching them how to drive..."
