Chapter 567: Chapter 239 - So It’s a Big Deal_2
Fish are incredible breeders, just give them ample space and the rate of reproduction is quite frightening. Yan Fei was certainly freaked out at first, even planting many aquatic plants in the rivers around his cattle farm, for fear that these little fishes wouldn’t survive without enough food!
But he soon found out these little fish do pretty well, although a lot of them got eaten by bigger fish, including those of the same species. Not only the big fish prey on the small ones, but even the Old Turtle does — the Old Turtle he had fished out of boredom from the big river and thrown in. How could a fish farm be complete without this creature!
After wandering around, he caught a few big fish and an Old Turtle as big as a washbowl. Only after they came out of the water did he realize he had caught overly big fish. Depressed beyond belief, this Jurassic world was indeed suitable for biological growth, these fish he had thrown in just a few months ago, had already grown a good deal longer.
Left with no choice, he had to throw the two biggest ones back into the lake, carrying out three ’small’ fish that were over a meter long and that Old Turtle.
Just as he stepped out, he saw some people cleaning up around the back door. To his surprise, they were from the armed department--Old Pan was leading a few men to clean up the area he’d previously felt didn’t need any tidying.
Everyone was startled to see him in this state, the weather hadn’t even warmed up enough for river bathing! Some people who were afraid of the cold still had their sweaters on and here he was, already fishing in the river. Truly, eccentric people do eccentric things, no wonder his cattle farm had been thriving!
The guy didn’t feel embarrassed at all after coming out of the river, they were all men after all, what was there to fear? He didn’t even bother to put his clothes on and holding up the fish, he greeted everyone: "Uncle Pan, you came at just the right time, join us for dinner tonight! I had good luck today, have you ever seen such a big turtle? Let it be an eye-opener for you and taste something new!"
They had never seen anything like it, even such big fish are rare!
Yan Fei threw the stuff over, put on his clothes, and asked, "Uncle Pan, it’s quite clean here, isn’t it? Do I need to clean it up again?"
Old Pan was speechless at that comment: "Are you deluded? The county is sending officials over, at least make it look cleaned up to show your respect. When a bunch of officials come, you can’t just be without any sort of response, it’ll seem like you don’t deem them as officials..."
Yan Fei smiled and didn’t argue: "Then you guys do the cleaning, I’ll take care of the drinks and meat. If these two fish aren’t enough, I’ll catch something else later!"
"No, no, we’re not here to eat. This is enough," Old Pan quickly dissuaded him. "You go ahead up, the Director of the Office from the government is here. He brought tables and stools for you. Your Uncle Baoguo has been looking for you!"
"Okay!" Yan Fei nodded and headed back, mumbling, "Does an office still need a director? How many directors would there be for so many offices? These days, the title of ’director’ is so undervalued..."
The others watched him leave, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
There really were a lot of people in front. Besides Lin Baoguo, there were also a bunch of unfamiliar faces. Two or three tricycles loaded with tables and stools had also been brought over. Miss Xu Xiaoyan was directing people to move the original tables and stools aside.
In this day and age, there are too many people who can’t appreciate good things. The chairs Yan Fei made were all from top-quality wood. If an expert were to appraise them, they would certainly find some rare wood among them. Who knows, there might even be ones made from fossil-grade wood. But because they weren’t varnished and didn’t look good, they were all now being cast aside.
Yan Fei didn’t care. Now that he had tea leaves, it was the perfect opportunity to prepare some tea for them.
The tea that the others brought was also collected—indeed there were too many people who couldn’t tell good from bad. His tea was picked from trees that were thousands of years old. Even though it didn’t look attractive, it was still packed away under the instruction of Lin Baoguo.
It wasn’t until Old Pan arrived asking to taste Yan Fei’s tea that it piqued the interest of others. By the time the aroma wafted out, even Lin Baoguo was speechless—anyone, regardless of their level of expertise, had a nose and mouth, and those senses wouldn’t lie.
Another tea lover sheepishly asked Yan Fei for some of his tea to take home. Yan Fei was relieved to have finally found someone who appreciated tea, and without a second thought, gifted the person a small bag. This was not unusual for him as this was the tea he typically used to make tea eggs.
There were sets of clean tea utensils sitting on tables and stools. It was clear that they were preparing for something big happening in a couple of days, as if the officials were expected to arrive at any moment.
They even swept the interior and exterior walls, pruned the barren branches of the roses that hadn’t yet sprouted buds, and tidied everything up without stopping for meals, before bidding farewell and leaving. In the end, only Old Pan, Lin Baoguo and a few others who were close to Yan Fei remained.
After all these activities, the cowherds realized that the opening ceremony about to be held seemed to be a big deal! Those who’d done the work were VIPs, and anyone of them would normally be vying for favor in town.
However, these key players of the cattle farm, especially Yan Fei, hadn’t bothered to mention it much, so everyone else didn’t take it seriously either. They had no idea how important this event was to outsiders.
The whole crew was clueless, working numbly and only learning over lunch from Lin Baoguo that even the county officials were coming...
This was alarming news to them, and they collectively blamed Boss Yan for being irresponsible. This matter was so important and he seemed unwilling to even mention it.
Annoyed, Yan Fei said, "What’s the big deal? They’re not bringing us any money, they’re just hindering our cattle buying. Fortunately, we have bought enough calves, we can just use the money left over to slowly buy some fattened cows. Yes, they are coming the day after tomorrow, so we should make another trip to buy fattened cows tomorrow. From then on, let’s prepare thirty fattened cows per month. We’ve calculated this well, ensuring that we have enough to slaughter one per day, without having to prepare too much in advance, which would require us to rear cattle for extra days."
Lin Baoguo retorted, "All you think about is buying cows. Can’t you put some thought into this matter? Having more officials around would raise the profile of your place. Isn’t that good for you?"
"I already have enough of a reputation, any more is unnecessary!" Yan Fei argued. "Isn’t everyone in our village aware of me? Bah! What benefits would it bring me if people from other places knew about me? I’m already apprehensive about attracting the wind by being tall! Reputation-wise, it’s enough to meet the needs..."
Miss Xu Xiaoyan gently tugged at him, admonishing, "How can you talk to Uncle Baoguo like that! It’s a good thing that officials are visiting us. It’ll be an honor for our company that we can reference in the future to prevent bad people from scheming against our cattle farm..."
"Yeah, yeah, that’s true!" Yan Fei nodded, appearing to have had an epiphany. "But, it’s a bit cheeky of them to come all this way empty-handed. It would be better if they would bring some benefits with them!"
The problem was, your guests travelled such a long distance and you can’t even be bothered to prepare a cup of tea to welcome them. Who’s being cheeky here?! Even in the countryside, people would invite strangers in need or even beggars into their homes to offer some tea. There’s a crowd of high-ranking officials visiting you and you’re not preparing anything. Do you think that’s really okay?
Both Lin Baoguo, Old Pan and the other guests didn’t know how to react when receiving this kind of response—it was clear to them now, that Yan Fei seemingly only took Miss Xu Xiaoyan’s words seriously, anything anyone else said was a waste of breath!
Seeing him nod so obediently at her words, they privately sneered: You, Boss Yan, are you really worried about bad people scheming against you? If you stop scheming against them, those bad people should be thanking their lucky stars!
