"What’s wrong?" Yan Fei demanded. "Is there something wrong with them saying my heroic act merits special admission?"
"No, there’s nothing wrong with that," Lin Baoguo nodded. "Your actions are certainly praiseworthy, and if you were an ordinary student who missed a few marks on an exam, special admission would be perfectly reasonable. But you are now a model of success, and they are offering you a place without even having to take the exam, which seems quite opportunistic. Clearly, they’re hoping that if you become successful in the future, they can claim credit as the school that produced such a student, enhancing their reputation!"
"Do you ever get tired of overthinking everything? All that matters is that they’ve let me in for school. Isn’t it good if they can offer me some conveniences, letting me attend university sooner rather than later? Why are you fixated on the potential drawbacks? It’s a win-win situation, and it benefits me pretty well. The way you’re talking makes it sound as though there’s something sinister behind their intentions," Yan Fei retorted, dissatisfied with Lin Baoguo’s commentary.
"Sigh... Don’t I just want you to learn more?" Lin Baoguo said, sounding defeated. "They let you go to school like this, but once you get busy, you might stop attending altogether. Isn’t that equivalent to giving you a diploma for nothing?"
"In any case, the matter has already been settled. There’s no sense in discussing it further." Yan Fei concluded. "By the way, you mentioned something important earlier but I got sidetracked. What was it you wanted to tell me?"
"That’s a minor concern, nothing urgent," Lin Baoguo replied. "You should first go visit the dean of your school. Pay him respect for all his help. You should also pay a visit to the principal of No.2 High School, just to nail down the agreement firmly. Here, take these two boxes of tea with you!" Lin Baoguo handed him two canisters of tea fetched from a cabinet. "After witnessing all this, I’ve concluded there’s no saving you now. Going to university? If you manage to get into university, I’ll..." he trailed off.
"Go on! What will you do?" Yan Fei asked, grabbing the tea and positioning it in front of himself, prodding Lin Baoguo to finish his sentence.
"Forget it, I’m not saying it," Lin Baoguo sighed. "I feel like I’ve already grown old. Things are moving too fast these days; I can hardly keep up. Yan Sanfen, who doesn’t see the need for schooling, gets admitted into high school under special circumstances. It wouldn’t surprise me if this precedent extends to university admissions in a few years. I won’t hold you up for dinner. I’d best send you off..." Lin Baoguo, frustrated by Yan Fei, felt much older than his twenties.
"No wait, didn’t you say there was something important? Is it about me?" Yan Fei said, showing no interest in leaving.
"Well, it’s not that important... but it does involve you," Lin Baoguo reluctantly said. "The village plans to move the Cattle Market to the outskirts of the town, near Village Entrance. Think of it as some support for you. It’ll be more convenient for you when you want to buy or sell cattle, and you might even sell a bit more liquor. As you already know, the village doesn’t hold much resources for supports other than this."
"Ah, is that all? For a moment there, I thought something serious had come up! It’s going to be more convenient indeed," Yan Fei nodded.
"What big issues can we possibly have in a place like ours?" Lin Baoguo retorted. "These days, even just your normal activities count as the biggest events in our village. Why not stir up some significant activity then?"
"Why do you only focus on our little town? Don’t you care about the country’s important affairs? Haven’t you seen how the whole country is celebrating the return of Hong Kong? Patriotic businessmen are coming to our province in groups for inspections. It’s such a great thing! I must say, though you are the head of the department, but you should occasionally pay attention to national affairs," Yan Fei chided.
"Where did you hear all this? I didn’t realize you cared about these so much, does it have anything to do with you?" Lin Baoguo asked with mixed feelings of laughter and tears.
"I just read it in the newspaper!" Yan Fei pointed out the newspaper on the table and replied earnestly, "It has nothing to do with me, but doesn’t it show that I have a strong sense of community pride? I’m proud because of this! Also, I just wanted to find a reason to criticize you!"
"Get out!" Lin Baoguo shouted, completely fed up. "Are you intentionally trying to rile me up? If you have real talent, then sell your beef in Hong Kong. That would count as your ability! Don’t irritate me for no reason..."
"Even if you ask me to leave, I wouldn’t!" Yan Fei, in high spirits, decided to intentionally provoke Uncle Baoguo. "So what if I sold it in Hong Kong? It’s no big deal. I can even sell it all over the world!"
"You’re pretty arrogant, aren’t you?" angered by Yan Fei’s deliberate attempt to provoke him, Lin Baoguo lashed out. "Fine, if you don’t leave, then I will! I finished work and I’m going home for dinner, you can stay here!"
With that, he picked up his documents, pushed open the door, and headed out.
Yan Fei casually picked up the two canisters of tea and followed him out, yelling after him, "Hold on! You didn’t answer me! If I manage to sell beef in Hong Kong, what are you going to do?"
Lin Baoguo strode away without looking back, yelling over his shoulder, "If you have the guts to sell your beef in Hong Kong, then I’ll shovel cow dung for you for three days..."
"You better stick to your words, there are many witnesses here!" Yan Fei shouted back, unable to chase after Lin Baoguo while pushing his bicycle.
Indeed, many people were listening, given that it was after work hours and everyone was out and about.
"Rest assured, if I go back on my word, you can call me your nephew from now on," Lin Baoguo shouted back, wishing to keep a great distance from Yan Fei. He had nearly reached the exit of the police station as he spoke.
The moment the director left, officers, including Dang Wenzheng, huddled around Yan Fei, complimenting him enthusiastically, "Boss Yan, you’re just awesome! See how upset you made our chief?"
Yan Fei grinned from ear to ear and replied, "Grandpa Mao said that there’s joy in striving with heaven and earth and with people! Regularly being angry is beneficial to one’s physical and mental health!"
"We’ve never heard of that. All we know is anger harms your health. No one ever said it benefits one’s physical and mental health. Where did you come up with this theory?" a group of police officers chuckled and shook their heads.
"You guys lack exposure, that’s what!" Yan Fei belittled them and explained as he hopped on his bike and started cycling away, "Watching others get angry frequently is beneficial to our own physical and mental health!"
Is that a thing?
A group of people watched him cycle away, stunned, and took a while before processing his theory.
When they finally regained their wits, they were filled with admiration. Indeed, Yan Fei was a big shot with ambitious plans. No wonder he annoyed Lin Baoguo enough to storm off.
