Chapter 554: Chapter 232 The Old Driver Takes a Good Apprentice_2

The silhouette said, "I’m not here to load cargo, I’m just up here to rest a bit!"

The voice sounded young, clearly different from the middle-aged man who led the way earlier.

Is he here to watch over me?

Old Yang wondered, but under someone else’s roof, he had no choice but to bow his head. It was their turf, he was just a truck driver, his job was to drive.

Having been a truck driver for some time, he understood one cannot offend local big shots dabbling in illegal activities. One wrong word and he could end up buried in some ditch.

He stayed silent, but the young man who had climbed into the truck was chatty. "Master, your driving skills are impressive! You can back up anywhere in pitch black, you must have been doing this for years!"

Old Yang responded modestly with a proud smile, "It’s my livelihood, I have to be skilled at it to feed myself."

The young man continued chatting and then proposed, "Would you teach me how to drive? Please, master?"

Having been addressed as ’master’, Old Yang felt compelled. As he was about to turn on the cab light, the young man laughed, "No need for light, master. Just give me some pointers, my sight is good, I can see."

After some time, Old Yang realized it wasn’t completely dark in the cab. After all, there were flashlights outside, providing a bit of light.

If he didn’t need the light, then he wouldn’t turn it on!

He thought the ’driving lesson’ was an excuse by the young man to observe him, to kill time, and didn’t give it much thought beyond that. It seemed ludicrous. He had encountered many who wanted to learn driving, some even brought gifts but a student attempting to learn in darkness and without starting the car was a first.

He agreed outwardly, but inside, he was sniggering at the naivety. Does this hick think it’s that easy to learn driving? Does he think he could drive away just by listening? If it was that easy, all of us drivers would have starved.

Despite his contempt, given a hundred chances, he wouldn’t dare anger these local figures.

So, he patiently began explaining from how to ignite the engine, manage speed, clutch and gear transition, handle various road conditions, and deal with sudden emergencies.

He was idle anyway, treating it as a way to pass the time.

To his surprise, the young man was actually quite diligent. He kept asking detailed questions at crucial points.

Having driven for so long, not being talkative would be a strange trait for Old Yang. Usually, to avoid dozing off while driving, drivers keep chatting with each other. Even the most silent ones must learn to make conversation, otherwise falling asleep while driving could land the truck in a ditch.

Now, with the young man asking questions and calling him ’master’, he felt motivated. What had been original humoring, now turned more earnest.

"Master, you’re amazing. With your instruction, I feel I can get this truck on the road...," the young man said, effortlessly complimenting and flattering Old Yang.

Coming here for illegal activities for the first time had made him extremely nervous. He felt uncomfortable being treated so cautiously. Normally, he would be treated politely, whether by big bosses or small ones. This cold hostility was unusual.

But now, this young man’s friendly chitchat had made him much more comfortable.

"You’ve got to treat a truck like a wife. Or else, sooner or later, she’ll act up. Once she acts up, it’s not just time and trouble, but your wallet will feel the pinch! So it’s necessary to establish good habits. For instance, over time, the brake pads will wear down, and with tens of tons of cargo, the last thing you need is faulty brakes. Fail to look after it, when trouble comes, crying won’t help...," Old Yang got excited as he spoke, his mood lightened, and he didn’t mind sharing his years of experience.

The young man listened attentively. Suddenly he said, "Master, the truck’s ready. They’re coming over to guide the way, I’ll go lie down in the back."

As he climbed to the small bunk behind the cab, the middle-aged guide came back, "Let’s go! On to the next place!"

Old Yang turned on the headlights, ready to drive off. The young man stuck out his head and said to the guide, "Uncle, have a cigarette. My master’s driving is great, right? He’s been driving for years, it’s comforting to have such an experienced driver."

The middle-aged man was taken aback at the presence of another person, but still accepted the offered cigarette. He laughed, "What do we have here, Furong Wang! Living high off the hog, aren’t we?"

The young man laughed back, "Of course, I came here to learn. Could I not bring good cigarettes? Master, you should have one too..."
