Chapter 530: Chapter 217 Taste the Flavor Greenhouse Seedling_1
"Good morning Old Master He! Not so busy now... why are you alone, where’s Xiaohe?" Yan Fei visited Mr. Old He early in the morning. "Do you have Immortal Grass here, no, I mean Lingzhi Mushroom?"
"Xiaohe has gone out. Do you want Lingzhi Mushroom? This is a pharmacy, how could we not have it? What’s up, what do you need it for?" Mr. Old He answered with a hearty laughter.
"I just want to have a look. Don’t we not have it around here? I want to see what it looks like!" Yan Fei replied casually. "I heard it has magical effects, I want to buy some to try and steep it in liquor."
"Who told you that?" Mr. Old He laughed even harder when he heard this. "It’s just a kind of herbal medicine, nothing as mysterious as the stories make it out to be. This stuff is now cultivated artificially, it’s no different from ordinary herbal medicines, sure it has effects, but it’s not as magical as you think!"
"No worries, I just want to try what it tastes like! You can give me a tiny amount." Yan Fei insisted.
Seeing his persistence, Mr. Old He stood up and pulled out a small drawer from the medicine cabinet, taking out two small Lingzhi mushrooms. "This is what it looks like, you can try it out."
"How much does it cost?" Yan Fei asked the price, breaking off a small piece and put it in his mouth, chewing it as if tasting some delicious food.
"Hey... You young man, how could you just eat it directly?" Mr. Old He wanted to stop him but it was too late. "It’s free, just take it."
"Then I don’t want it, I’ll give you back the rest!" Yan Fei returned the remaining Lingzhi mushroom, including the piece he had broken off.
"You really just wanted to try the taste, huh?" Mr. Old He was both amused and frustrated. He figured out this guy wasn’t really intending to steep it in liquor, but was merely curious!
"Yes, absolutely!" Yan Fei also laughed heartily. "I was just passing by, and I just thought of it, so I came to see. By the way, Old Master He, why are your Lingzhi mushrooms so small? Can’t they grow bigger?"
"Of course, they can!" Mr. Old He replied. "When I was young, I traveled everywhere and saw a Lingzhi mushroom as big as a washbasin. To grow that big, it requires high growth conditions, mainly in places where human footprints are scarce, ordinary people can’t see or pick it."
"Such a big one must be worth a lot of money right? Can it be passed down as a family heirloom?" Yan Fei continued to inquire.
"It’s definitely worth money, but it can’t be a family heirloom." Mr. Old He explained. "This stuff isn’t easy to preserve, even if you preserve it well, the medicinal effectiveness will fade away after a year or two. Without medicinal value, how could a herb be valuable?"
"I see! We should use it as soon as it’s picked!" Yan Fei thoughtfully asked. "Are there any bigger ones?"
"I don’t know, at least I’ve never seen any."
"Oh!" Yan Fei said his goodbyes. "I’ll go ahead then, Old Master He, thank you, wish you longevity!"
As Yan Fei walked out, Mr. Old He watched him leave, chuckling to himself: "This kid sure knows how to talk now..."
Once Yan Fei left the store, he couldn’t help laughing, then headed straight to Ma Yongming’s house on his bicycle.
Before he even entered the door, he saw Old Ma, Ma Yongming’s father, with a face full of spring delight, holding his grandson by the front door.
Yan Fei greeted him, "Old Master Dong, is Uncle Ming at home?"
"He’s gone to work in the countryside, why are you looking for him?"
"I’m planning to build a house. I was going to do it right after the Chinese New Year, but got super busy, and now it’s delayed." Yan Fei answered. "I want to build houses on the vacant land to the east of the cattle farm. As more people work in the farm, the current houses are a bit cramped."
"People all live in the east, and you don’t need to guard the cattle farm at night?" Old Ma, who had been building houses all his life, pointed out the problem as soon as he heard it. "You just need to build another row of houses on the other side of the tile-roofed house at the gate. Closer to the road, it’s convenient if you want to sell something in the future. Construct it as a multi-storey building, the first floor can act as a storefront, convenient for selling liquor, vegetables, etc. The second and third floors can house people. Living on the upper floors and looking down at the cattle farm is also convenient. You can see the entire cattle farm from up there, how good is that!"
"Can’t afford to build a multi-storey building, all the money has been spent on cattle, now there’s not enough money." Yan Fei didn’t hesitate to tell the truth. In fact, he really didn’t have much money now, even to build a tiled house, he had to wait to kill a cow today to afford it. "I’m still buying calves, I can’t even pool enough money, and I’m having financial difficulties."
"Why worry about tight finances? Sooner or later, you’ll need to build a multi-storey building there, and you’ll be building a tiled house that can only be used for a few days? Just start building, and Uncle Ming can cover the cost for you first, and you just give it back to him when you can." Old Ma solved his dilemma in a single phrase.
"That’d be good, since I’m building the east, you might as well build it for me, but without making it a multi-storey one, just a cowshed, and a place for fermenting fodder, okay?" After some thought, Yan Fei asked.
"Wait for Uncle Ming to come back and you tell him, let him help you plan it well, exactly how to build it will be the best. This old man’s thoughts are not good now, can’t keep up with the times, and our ideas are not the same as you young people’s, let him have a good look and you two discuss slowly."
"Great! Just let him know when he returns, I’ll go first."
"Don’t leave yet, I have something for you!" Old Ma called him.
"What’s the matter?" Yan Fei was already on his bike when he turned it around and came back.
"Don’t you still have more than ten acres of land on your side? I remember Uncle Ming said you’ve almost prepared it, what are you planning to grow?"
"Still undecided, nothing I’m want to grow, the produce won’t sell for any good price. I’ve been too busy to care about it, just leave it, sooner or later I’ll build a worm farm on a few acres, the rest will be big farmhouses for growing vegetables when summer is over." Part of the reason for not attending to it is due to busyness, and the more important reason is that it doesn’t sell for much. He’s too busy now to delay other things for that little bit of money.
"Doesn’t sell for much because you don’t know how to grow!" Old Ma smiled and stared at him, then switched gears, explaining his purpose. "I have an idea, listen to me, do you think it’s reliable?"
"What idea?"
"Your greenhouse, doesn’t it grow cucumbers in winter? Will watermelons sprout if you plant them now?"
"Certainly! It’s warmer inside than outside..." Yan Fei responded instinctively. "Are you saying I should grow watermelons?"
"That’s settled then! As long as it sprouts, it’s all good!" Old Ma grew excited holding his grandson. "Now start growing watermelon seedlings in your greenhouse, when it gets warmer, transplant them outside, by then other watermelons haven’t come down yet, yours would be the first to be harvested, won’t you make money then?"
"That’s true!" Yan Fei also realized it when he heard this. "In that case, anything can be grown, if it’s just for seedlings, an acre of greenhouse is enough. I’ve been thinking about the cattle farm lately, didn’t really think of this!"
Old Ma laughed when he heard him say this: "Ever since you got that greenhouse, I’ve been thinking about it! Now people are great, in the future, whatever vegetables you want to eat in any season will be possible. Seems like my idea is not so far-fetched either!"
Yan Fei gave him a thumbs up: "Very reliable, I’ll stake your watermelons this year, let me know how many you want to eat and I’ll deliver it, I’ve got to go Old Master Dong!"
"Alright, you go busy!" Old Ma watched him leave laughing, happier than if he had grown watermelons himself.
Helping others is the foundation of happiness! Being able to suggest something and have it accepted surely brings joy!
