Chapter 525: Chapter 212: Delivering the Cow to the Door (Fourth Change, Asking for Subscription)
As he flew over the Sancha River, Yan Fei first looked down at the Cattle Market and noticed that it was nearly empty. He then glanced at his own cattle ranch and was immediately taken aback. The place was bustling with people, leading calves through the doors.
Yan Fei found a secluded place to land and wondered as he walked towards his ranch, why were there so many calves when there wasn’t even any money left on the ranch?
The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became. He started to run.
Before he even reached the bridge, someone recognized him and shouted, "Don’t worry, everyone. Boss Yan is back."
Hearing the shout, Heizi ran out of the ranch and asked Yan Fei, "Did you bring back the money? People are here from Small Gold River Township, they’ve heard that we’ve been buying cattle, so they came to us. The price they’re asking for is not too high. I told them to wait for you. I was afraid you wouldn’t come back today! We also have some from our village. I spotted them in the Cattle Market and told them to come and wait here for you...."
Yan Fei didn’t know what to say. He reached out and slapped Heizi on the head, "Have you lost your mind? What if I couldn’t bring back any money?"
Heizi covered his head, "If there’s no money today, wouldn’t there be money tomorrow? I told them to wait for half a day or even a day. If they really can’t wait, we can issue them I.O.U’s. We’re a huge cattle ranch, they can’t be worried about us failing to pay, right? Two days won’t make a difference!"
By ’issuing I.O.U’s’, Heizi was referring to a practice during the grain-collection time where officials issued I.O.U’s when they didn’t have ready cash. The reputation of such I.O.U’s was extremely low and over time, the authorities had to step in to regulate it. The phrase "issuing I.O.U’s" had come to be distrusted among the populace.
"Alright, you’re right. Stop talking. Gather everyone inside. Call Brother Chao to come and help, has Zhang Hui arrived?" Afraid of a sharp-eared person overhearing Heizi, Yan Fei cut him off as they approached the crowd.
"They’re all waiting inside. Zhang Hui even brought his interns!"
"Good!"
At the entrance, the two men ushered everyone inside. Then, Yan Fei brought a table and a chair from the house and placed them in the middle of the yard. He shouted to the chaotic crowd, "Don’t worry, don’t push each other! Come one by one, there’s plenty of money, I’m afraid your cattle aren’t enough. Don’t worry about us not having enough money. I’ll buy any cattle that meet the qualifications!"
He then sat on the stool and placed a lump of cash on the table, and began to display it.
Without displaying much, just four or five bundles, it was already enough money for these cattle.
Yan Fei had no choice, he couldn’t hide his wealth. Moreover, as there were so many people and calves moving about, it wasn’t safe to keep the money hidden. Without the money to maintain control, who knows when the chaos might end!
The people weren’t fools, they saw the bulging bag! They knew that it was full of money.
Who had ever seen so much money in these times!
The crowd immediately became excited and no longer rushed towards this side. One by one, they craned their necks and stared at the money on the table, starting to line up as he instructed.
As Yan Fei, Zhang Hui, and the two interns who obviously were students inspected the cattle, Zhang Hui also explained to the interns. Yan Fei glanced at them generally, and let the owner first tell the price. If it was suitable, he would then wait for Zhang Hui to finish the inspection, directly count the money, let someone affix a price tag on the cattle, and lead them to the cattle stable to feed.
Most of the prices were reasonable. A few were slightly higher, so Yan Fei bargained to lower them. With so many people watching, it was clear to everyone who offered a reasonable price. Basically, there would be no mistakes. Furthermore, considering the long distance, even if the prices their cattle drew here were not entirely satisfactory, they knew they would have a hard time finding a better deal, so they sold their cattle rather than leading them back and forth.
As for the quality of the cattle, most of those who could bring them such a long way here were quite confident. They all knew that the ranch wouldn’t lack experts, so those who were prepared for deceit wisely kept their distance. After all, the ranch wasn’t indigenous to them, and there were psychological barriers. They were afraid that if they annoyed the ranch, they would lose face, and it was not impossible that they might even get beaten up.
As they looked at the cattle and the prices, the deal closure rate was quite high. There were virtually no failures. Only an old man claimed that his cattle had been bred with a good breeding bull and asked for a high price. Yan Fei thought the calf was average and didn’t agree - this claim was too uncertain. Would he have to go to their village to investigate where the cattle had been bred and then go and check the breeding bull? For a single calf, it wasn’t worth it.
Counting money and listening to the discussions of the calf owners, Yan Fei learned that most of the people from the Small Gold River Township had come here because they were dissatisfied with the cattle market there. They felt that the cattle traders in their own town were too domineering. So, they asked around about Yan Fei’s cattle ranch and heard good reviews, so they simply took the chance when there was no market going on there, to come here after traveling dozens of miles further.
As for the rest, they heard about the ranch and wanted to try their luck. It was probably because as they traveled the road, more and more people heard about it, so this large crowd had gathered.
Before the cattle purchasing was finished, and while the line was still long, some proactive villagers came. As usual, having idle time and looking forward to getting some cattle, they came to wait and see if there might be cattle available. It was out of tact, to avoid having to be notified by someone else.
Some were locals who had visited many times before and were also part of the local militia. These people came and also helped keep things in order. Some even saw the pile of money on the table and came to act as security, soon forming a large circle.
Yan Fei waved his hand, "These are all our fellow villagers. I trust them. You don’t need to keep watch over this sum of money. If you’re free, go and see how the cattle are fed, or help maintain order."
In fact, he was confident in himself, and his words were filled with an air of generosity.
As these people dispersed into the crowd with smiles, some strangers looked puzzled seeing so many people at the ranch.
The helpful villagers were proud to say, we’re here to collect cattle!
What? Those who didn’t know the situation asked.
This was how things were in their small town. When something novel happened, the news spread faster than a phone call. But if you weren’t from the same town, even if you were from surrounding villages, you might not know the news.
Once the situation was explained in a few words, the outsiders were suddenly beating their chests with regret. Looking at the pile of money on the table and then at its owner, they grumbled at the heavens: Why couldn’t such a person be from our town?
So, those from the same town were particularly proud and began to boast about Yan Fei and his various exploits.
This is how a person’s reputation gets spread around...
