Chapter 511: Chapter 199: Leading the Cow by the Fingerprint_1
Seeing that no one was asking any more questions, Yan Fei was about to step down from the stage when Old Pan also clambered onto a stool, grabbed the megaphone and bellowed out, "Anyone who has questions, hurry up and ask! If no one is asking, can I ask for you?"
"Sure!" The response, for once, was rather unanimous.
"Fine. I’ll ask Boss Yan first, do these cows that you’re distributing also include anyone other than the militia?" asked Old Pan, grinning cheerfully.
"We’re not distributing cows," Yan Fei clarified, "I’d read aloud earlier, we’re partnering up; I provide the capital, you provide the labor, and we’ll share in the profits come New Year. I’d love to give cows to every household, but I’m still too poor for that. Once I have more money, whoever wants to partner up with me to rear cows is welcome!"
When he mentioned his poverty, the crowd suddenly erupted into laughter and lively chatter.
Old Pan grabbed the megaphone again, "Was everyone only concerned with that one question? Are there any other questions?"
A militia raised his hand, "Can each household only rear two cows? We have many people in our house, we can take care of a few more!"
Old Pan answered on behalf of Yan Fei without giving him the megaphone, "We’ll discuss this matter later, all those registered to rear cows can stay. We’ll settle it slowly."
With no more questions, the crowd still refused to disperse, instead wanting to watch the cow distribution process.
Seeing that it couldn’t be helped, why not just enter the house to discuss? This is when Yan Fei finally had time to greet the leaders who came from the town. Since he wasn’t particularly skilled at socializing, he saw Lin Yumei was there and there was tea on the table. He casually invited Mayor Chen an others, "Mayor Chen, do you want to come in and rest for a bit?"
Mayor Chen waved his hand, "You go ahead and do your thing, you’re the star today. We’re all here to watch the show, don’t stand on ceremony, just do what you have to do."
After Yan Fei muttered a polite statement, he turned to Old Pan. Before he even had the chance to speak, Old Pan pulled out a list from his pocket, "This is a name list, follow the order. Since I notified everyone, whoever ran here first gets their name on the top. Those who lagged behind will have to accept it. We all know each other well, just do as you see fit! Due to today’s situation, there’s no point in discussing this further, just go ahead and distribute the cows."
Yan Fei thought for a while, "Well, let’s start the signing and cow distribution process. Currently, there’s just about forty to fifty cows, we’ll stick with two cows per household. Let’s begin with distributing to a little over twenty households."
"You want them to sign?" Old Pan exclaimed, cutting off Yan Fei. "In our place, we believe in fingerprinting. You don’t trust them if they just sign? Luckily, I came prepared. I even brought my own red ink paste, otherwise we’d be stuck."
His preparation was impressively thorough.
Yan Fei nodded, then turned to Ma Yongming. "Uncle Ming, you go and talk to your men, we’ve got a lot of people today, so we’ll let the militia go first. Your cattle can wait a little longer, it won’t make much of a difference."
Ma Yongming nodded, "No Problem. We saw the amount of people here and had already planned to let them go ahead first. They were eager to see the spectacle, so they had no thoughts of taking their cows home today."
"Then let’s get started!" With a wave of his hand, Yan Fei made his way out the door.
Standing on a stool, megaphone in hand, He waved the list of names, "When I call your name, come forward. We’ll go to the inner courtyard together. You’ll sign your name, leave a fingerprint, then you can lead your cow home."
The noisy crowd outside immediately quietened down and eagerly watched him and his name list. Most of them looked envious, while a minority had expectant eyes.
"Tian Dazhuang..." As he read the first name, Yan Fei couldn’t help but mutter under his breath. "Isn’t that guy from Heap Hillock in Huangtuwa? How is he the first to get here?"
But of course, he was quite familiar with this guy. This was the man who, when Yan Fei was leading his cows to Houfang Village, had shouted out to all the people of Houfang Village that while others were herding cows and sheep, Yan Fei was here to release tigers!
The megaphone was still in Yan Fei’s hands! The moment the words came out, an uproar of laughter erupted from the crowd, and a young man in the crowd started jumping and waving, "That’s me, that’s me. Move, move, let me through. Ha ha, I ran here as soon as I received news, don’t be jealous because I’m faster!"
If they weren’t envious, that would be strange. Looking at his complacent face, some people even wanted to rush up and punch him!
Amidst the wave of laughter and envious chatter, the guy managed to squeeze his way through the crowd. After getting on stage, he playfully leaned over to Yan Fei and said, "Brother Fei, can I borrow the megaphone?"
Yan Fei handed over the megaphone. The guy climbed onto a stool and started testing the microphone in a dramatically exaggerated manner, which immediately drew another wave of laughter from the crowd. Keeping his face straight, he shouted, "In front of all the villagers here today, I, Tian Dazhuang, want to make a statement! When the cow comes home, I promise to serve it like my own wife. If I don’t rear the cow well, I’ll never show my face in public again!"
The crowd burst into laughter again, with a familiar voice taunting, "Big Brother Zhuang, do you know which village your mother-in-law is from? You might want to go ask if she has given birth to your wife yet!"
The laughter only grew louder at that!
These who rushed to register demonstrated quick wit. When the second name was called, the young man, taking a leaf out of Tian Dazhuang’s book, held the megaphone and shouted, "I declare this! If I fail to rear my cow well, I will be unable to find my mother-in-law’s house!"
This oath really hit home for the young guys out there, it was seriously threatening. The crowd paused for a second, then erupted into laughter so loud it seemed like it might bring down the cow house.
So this became the norm for everyone who followed, each one would grab the megaphone and shout their variety of odd and peculiar pledges. This got the crowd laughing uproariously. Even a few who were clearly not good at speaking, stuttered out a few words.
In the end, when the names were all called, those whose names were not called were immediately filled with disappointment. But it can’t be helped, it’s their fault for being skeptical when they heard the news and not reacting quickly enough! Didn’t they see that the person who lived furthest away was actually the first to arrive? If only they knew this would have happened, they would have ran to the town to confirm the news with Minister Pan even if they didn’t believe it. Looking at the ones who now had cows, they were all so gleeful!
Originally, the plan was to invite prospective cow rearers to see the cows, get an approximate idea of the type of cows and their weight, but with so many people, it was impossible to see anything. We’ll have to wait until some of them leave before doing that.
The cows that Heizi bought had all been inspected and tagged. People could lead them away once Yan Fei filled in the purchase price and they signed their name, leaving a fingerprint, the cow was then handed over to its new owner.
There was one person even more excited, the one who pledged to serve the cow like his mother-in-law. He started shouting while leading the cow in the crowd, "Mum, mum, dad, where are you?"
Everyone laughed together, thinking the guy was just overly excited and calling his parents over to see the cow!
However, when a couple squeezed their way through the crowd, everyone got even more excited when they saw the woman prepared two big red bows and hung them on the cow’s head.
The young man, brimming with joy, proudly challenged Tian Dazhuang, who got his cow earlier, "Tain Dazhuang, did you prepare this?"
A smart guy with a camera ran over, "Don’t rush off, don’t rush off. I’ll take a family portrait for you. Don’t worry, there’s no charge for photos today. Come on, let’s see some smiles!"
Someone beside chimed in enviously, "Do they need to be asked to smile? They’ve been grinning from ear to ear! Look at those teeth..."
Amidst the laughter, the photographer timely pressed the shutter and captured the moment.
