Chapter 489: Chapter 184: Even Earthworms Have Their Intricacies_1
Early in the morning, Lin Baoguo rushed to the vegetable greenhouse, looking at the roaring tigers with a face of helplessness, "Xiao Fei, come out! I told you already, we would go to capture Gu Shuancheng ourselves. How on earth could you take matters into your own hands again? You left the suspect at the station without notifying anyone! Do you not fear torturing the person to death?"
After shouting for a long while, Heizi came out from the house, "Director Lin, Brother Fei left last night. He and his wife went to the Provincial City to sell the bezoar. They’re not even here now. I’m sure whatever happened wasn’t caused by him. After he finished discussing our plans last night, he packed up and left with his wife. By now, they’ve probably reached the Provincial City."
Lin Baoguo was furious and frustrated, "If not him then who? I can’t think of anyone else capable of doing this. You have no idea. He even left the victim soaking wet in a puddle of water, tied up like a dumpling and left in a corner of the station. By dawn, the man was almost freezing to death. This damn kid, learning how to craft alibis now, is he? His talents have certainly grown!"
Heizi couldn’t help but laugh upon hearing this. It did sound like something Yan Fei would do, but he had witnessed Yan Fei and Miss Xu Xiaoyan leave last night. He racked his brain but couldn’t figure out how Yan Fei had managed to get to Houfang Village, abduct a person, and dump them at the police station.
In the end, he could only try to soothe Director Lin, "Director Lin, Brother Fei really did leave last night. It definitely wasn’t him who did it. There are witnesses in our place. Judging by the timing, Brother Fei would have had to board a train to the city last night. How could he have possibly flown to Houfang Village in the middle of that to abduct someone? Perhaps someone else did it out of a sense of injustice? You can’t put all the blame on our Brother Fei, right?"
Director Lin, unable to find the person in question in the face of his frustrations, left in a huff, "I’ll settle the score with him when he returns. The villagers probably haven’t realized what’s happened yet. When they do, we’ll have more to deal with."
By this point, Yan Fei had already spent a night with his girl on the train, having arrived at the Provincial City. As for last night’s incident, Yan Fei was definitely denying it. The people on the train could testify: except for a relatively longer visit to the restroom right after he boarded, he spent the rest of the time talking and cuddling with his girl.
Exiting the train, Miss Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t help but shiver a little. Seeing this, Yan Fei put down his bag quickly and said, "Grab another layer of clothes! The weather’s colder here than back at home!"
The girl tightened her coat, jumped around on the spot for a bit, and said with enthusiasm, "I’m fine! I’m dressed warmly and I’m just feeling a tad uncomfortable because we’ve just gotten off the train. A little walking will do the trick. I’m as strong as an ox now, what’s there for me to be afraid of!"
With that said, she picked up a large bag and a smaller one, signaling Yan Fei to move, "Let’s go!"
Seeing her in good spirits, Yan Fei also picked up his bags and followed her.
As they exited the train station, Yan Fei wanted to hail a taxi. However, the sight of their loaded bags made the taxi driver demand extra fare, which didn’t sit well with the lady of the group. So they decided to take a bus instead.
Apart from Miss Xu Xiaoyan’s luggage, there were also two bags of dried earthworms that Yan Fei brought along – after much time and effort, aided by produce from the valley, a small and a large bag of dried earthworms were finally available for sale.
Of course, there was also the bezoar, plus all sorts of other stuff, such as honey. Describing them as movers was not an exaggeration. Even the bus driver laughed at them, assuming they were a newly married couple come to the Provincial City for work.
Despite being a secret powerhouse, Miss Xu Xiaoyan still found herself flushed with exertion as she lugged the bags upstairs.
After placing their belongings down, the two cleaned the rented flat before making some food. Once they were done eating, they headed out holding their bags.
Once downstairs, they found a phone and dialed Wang Jiuming’s number. As soon as the call connected, Yan Fei said rather apologetically, "Senior Brother Wang, I need your advice on something. One of my cattle produced a bezoar during the New Year. I was wondering if you knew of any place that would be willing to purchase it?"
"Bezoar?" Wang Jiuming’s voice echoed with its usual warmth and enthusiasm. "How big is it?"
"Just over a catty!"
"Over a catty of natural bezoar, young man, you’re on your way to becoming wealthy! I can see from your phone number that you’ve arrived in the Provincial City. Are you near the university?"
"Yes!"
"Great! I was just about free! Tell me where you are, and I’ll come to you."
After Yan Fei provided the location, Wang Jiuming arrived in no time driving his own car. Yan Fei introduced him to his wife and then took out the bezoar for Wang Jiuming’s inspection.
"Good Lord! It really is huge! I don’t actually know much about this stuff. We need to find someone else to take a look." Wang Jiuming examined the bezoar from every angle, to the disappointment of the couple who had thought he knew his stuff. "Don’t worry though, I might not know much, but I can find someone who does. Come with me to see this person. They’ll be able to help."
As they were getting in the car, Wang Jiuming took notice of their two bags, "What have you got in those?"
"Dried earthworms!" Yan Fei replied happily. "I’ve been breeding them for a while now, and now I can finally sell them and make some money. There’s a small bag with some really big ones that I’ve bred myself. Can you take a look and tell me if they’re good or not?"
Wang Jiuming was able to answer that query. He was astonished as he took a look, "This big one, is it a special breed?"
As he spoke, he took out a dried earthworm for a closer look.
Yan Fei bluffed his way through an answer, "A special breed? I don’t know about that. These are the wild earthworms from our local area that I collected. I just followed the information you gave, and kept raising them haphazardly. But somehow, the more I raised them, the larger they grew. I don’t understand why. I was worried that these bigger ones wouldn’t be wanted, so I even specifically packed a small bag just to test the waters. The big bag contains smaller earthworms from the initial stages. Later on, the earthworms seem to grow bigger than before. Is it still going to work? They are all of one breed, only the size has increased."
"Of course it works, why wouldn’t it work if they’ve grown bigger?" Wang Jiuming slapped his thigh, a look of regret on his face, "Why didn’t you tell me sooner! Why did you let them dry out? If you’d raised them properly, perhaps you could have bred a new variety of earthworm. Currently, the professionally bred earthworms in our country are all breeds imported from Japan in the 1970s. If you do it right, why bother selling dried earthworms? You could just sell earthworm seeds."
"Well, I still have them back home! How about I separate the smaller ones and only breed the larger ones in the future? Would that lead to the formation of a new breed?" Yan Fei asked.
"It’s not that simple, the key is to observe whether their growth is stable or not. It’s quite complicated, I can’t fully explain it to you in a short time. Come, tell me how you got these earthworm seeds. Do these types of earthworms naturally occur in your area, or did they grow unexpectedly through crossbreeding?" Hearing that Yan Fei still has a supply back home reassured Wang Jiuming, so he began to inquire about the source of the earthworms.
