Chapter 488: Chapter 183: The Pitiful Intern_1

Upon returning to the cattle farm, Yan Fei took two golden eagles out for a stroll, and brought along a jar of wine as a gift for the old station master. After lunch, he went back to the cattle farm to hold a small meeting with his wife.

Heizi, who was good at talking, was finally able to show his talents. His job was to buy cattle and publicize the breeding program for the breeding bulls.

The cattle farm’s first batch of ten head of cattle included three cows that were kept on the farm for breeding. The other seven cattle, combined with a breeding bull that had been successfully reared, were put on show for everyone to see. Any interested parties who wanted to breed their cows were noted down, and they would wait for the calves later.

As for the breeding fees, they would be priced as per the veterinary station’s charges. It didn’t matter if it was a bit expensive, because they promised to refund the money, and even double it if the cows were good. Surely some families hoping to rear good cattle wouldn’t mind if the price was a bit higher!

After all, everyone was from the same village, and they trusted that Yanfei would keep his word.

The bone meal ratio experiment that the cattle farm had started before the New Year had produced results. A fifty percent increase from the original quantity provided the best effects. Even though using even more bone meal didn’t harm the cows, there was no observable effect. Thus, the trial was terminated before the maximum limit was reached.

Now, they were beginning to buy calves in large numbers. After observing them for a few days on the cattle farm, and having Zhang Hui check for any problems, they would hold on to the calves until people came to sign agreements to rear them.

Buying cattle was straightforward. Since they needed to buy alot, they couldn’t afford to be as picky as before. Heizi could handle this task. Although he was still learning the ropes of discerning good cattle, he had his brother who was experienced at the cattle market to help him out.

Then, Yan Fei asked the group, "Who knows of any highly educated individuals who can read, write, count, and talk? We are going to need more people to handle documentation in the future. We are a bit understaffed at the moment! It would be great if they have some knowledge about cattle."

The group exchanged glances. "There are plenty of educated people in the town, no doubt about that, but most of them either have jobs or have their own businesses to run, and very few of them know about cattle farming. The ones who do are vets..."

At this crucial moment, Zhang Hui had a brilliant idea. With a smirk, he said, "You can always ask the old station master! This time of year, new interns are always getting assigned to places for placement. You can talk to him about getting a few more added to our place."

"Interns might be educated, but don’t they lack experience?" Xu Xiaoyan asked on behalf of everyone.

"I can train them! Hehe..." Zhang Hui was so pleased with his idea he started laughing before he could finish his sentences. "We won’t exploit them. We can provide a monthly allowance of thirty yuan. We just need to decide on how many we want."

"Thirty yuan isn’t exploitation?" Heizi muttered to himself.

"Wait, we can get alluring deals like those?", Yan Fei’s eyes lit up in delight. "These interns are at least technical secondary school graduates, right?"

"You’ve got too high of an opinion about technical secondary school graduates. The number of graduates each year is increasing and not many farm veterinary stations require extra help. Most stations are forced to take on these interns. Requesting a few wouldn’t be a burden but, in fact, helping them out!" Zhang Hui explained. "They’ll be grateful to us!"

But Yan Fei had a broader outlook. "But what about when they finish their internship and leave?"

"By that time half the year is over, you won’t have as much work once the cattle have been distributed," Zhang Hui said. "If they don’t leave, you would have to pay them the thirty yuan! When you’re busy again at the end of the year, we can request a few interns in advance and have them start before the winter break."

"Is that even possible?" Everyone was dumbstruck; they were clueless about these white-collar affairs!

"Of course it’s possible!" Seeing their blank looks, Zhang Hui further explained, "Nowadays, due to the increased mechanization of agriculture, there are fewer and fewer job openings for our specialty. It’s hard to even find a place for an internship. If we request earlier, we can select good performing students from school!"

It probably wasn’t as simple as he made it out to be, but this at least showed that the idea was plausible.

After a moment’s hesitation, Zhang Hui added, "Actually, if you expand your cattle farm in the future and find good interns, you might be able to keep them longer. As long as the benefits are ample, they might prefer to stay here, rather than being assigned to a remote, poverty-stricken place. If you keep a few professionals here, even I wouldn’t need to be here."

Upon hearing these words, Heizi understood the implications. He sneered at Zhang Hui and said, "Do you think Brother Fei would approve of such a scheme? Do you think Brother Fei would leave you out after taking your advice? Just look at how crafty you’re being!"

"I know Brother Fei is not like that, that’s why I proposed this idea. If he were, I’d have kept quiet and made a killing myself, bringing the interns here to work while pocketing the thirty yuan for myself. In the end, both of you would thank me," Zhang Hui responded, unbothered by Heizi’s contempt and even sounding quite proud of himself.

This was true! When he had discovered the Bezoar, Yan Fei had secretly given him five hundred yuan, a fact that remained unknown to the others. It was precisely because he was sure that Yan Fei wasn’t the kind to agree to a scheme that would betray him later, that Zhang Hui had voiced his proposal.

Otherwise, he would’ve, as he said, kept quiet about it, led the interns to work here – the interns would be grateful for the opportunity, Yan Fei would be grateful for the extra help, the thirty yuan would go into his own pocket. He would be making a profit from both ends.

The group pondered over what he said. Heizi was the first to understand. On the other hand, people like Gao Rui, couldn’t understand it.

Upon understanding, Heizi exclaimed, "You bookish folks are full of cunning tricks! Even making others work for free is within your capabilities. It’s like selling someone and having them count the money for you..."

Zhang Hui looked at him dismissively, "You don’t know anything. As I said, I’m giving them the opportunity to gain experience. They should be thankful! Money is a small matter. If there are extra interns, I won’t bring those who don’t invite me. By then they’ll even invite me for meals. If they don’t even have that much tact, they’ll be at a disadvantage when they get to work..."

Everyone was speechless. This was uncharted territory for them. Knowing the cunning mind of Zhang Hui, they began to feel sorry for the interns.

Poor them, they’ve been sold even before they got here, and they’ll even have to count the money for their own sale...
