Chapter 464: Chapter 159: Nearly Conscripted_1
"Uncle Pan, I’m one of our militia guys, you can’t just ignore me!" Yan Fei said, with a face full of grievances. He had found Old Pan from the Armed Department and began to complain. "They’ve actually got the nerve to trick me and steal my bezoar. If you don’t help me, I would be left with no way to seek justice!"
Old Pan, grinning like a sly fox, replied: "Your uncle surely didn’t send you here, did he? We’ve already cleared things up. I even called it in. You’re not only a member of the militia but also an honored contributor to our organization. How could I not help you? Once I knew about this issue, I’ve reported it. The county has already said, it certainly won’t allow mistreatment for someone like you. Just relax!"
Yan Fei had no idea about the significance of his contribution. With the county now heavily focusing on promoting the development of the militia, he took the chance to step up. The relevant departments were delighted by this, and now, he had become a model figure in the militia of Tanghe County- had he not been so young, they would’ve asked him to deliver speeches across the townships!
Hearing Old Pan say this put Yan Fei in a state of joy and frustration. He was glad that Old Pan was genuinely concerned, but also annoyed because the trip seemed pointless since everything was already settled on his behalf.
But not only caring, Old Pan was also like a father to his soldiers: "It’s great that you’re here. If you don’t have other things to do, how about I teach you how to operate a gun?"
Yan Fei wasn’t in the mood for that: "Thank you, Uncle Pan, but I have things to do today. Let’s save it for another time!"
"Sure! You’re welcome anytime, I’ll take you to learn shooting whenever I’m free," Old Pan accepted his decision without any pressure, then he curiously asked, "Just curious, are you interested in becoming a soldier?"
Yan Fei was puzzled: "Am I not already a soldier?"
Old Pan laughed: "You’re part of the militia, I’m talking about the regular army."
"I’ve never thought about that, and I’m underage anyway! Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t," Yan Fei hadn’t considered joining the army, considering his thriving cattle-raising business. In a few days, he’d sell the bezoar, and with over seventy thousand yuan on hand, he could buy a large number of cattle. Just thinking about it thrilled him.
Surprisingly, Old Pan explained: "Your age isn’t a big issue. If you want to, I can help you apply. Given your physical condition, skillset, and political awareness shown over the last year, it’s not a problem to be specially recruited. You can choose from either the navy or the army. Operating ships, driving tanks or whatever gun you want to play with, even aircraft, and cannons are not out of the question. What do you think? Do you feel the urge?"
Immediately, Yan Fei became alert: "I’m planning to go to university! I’m even preparing for the High School Entrance Examination. You know my wife is a university student, so I am definitely going to college. How could I join the army then?"
Can’t blame him for being alert. He initially didn’t care, thinking Old Pan was just throwing out an interesting question about joining the army. But hearing such a detailed explanation made him realize that something was off. No wonder Old Pan was being so good to him! It’s clear that there was an ulterior motive, which was to recruit him!
Hearing his refusal, Old Pan chuckled, "That’s not a problem either. Once you get into the armed forces, you can continue your studies and apply for a Military Academy! I’ll tell you a little secret: applying for a Military Academy from the armed forces is a lot easier than from high school. Given your qualifications, it’s not impossible to get directly into one without any connections or back door channels. How does that sound?"
Seeing Old Pan’s mysterious behavior, Yan Fei was afraid that he might be drafted. Instead of making excuses, he addressed it directly: "I am underage, it’s illegal for you to make me a soldier, right? I refuse anyway, and without my agreement, no one can force me. Why don’t you wait until I turn eighteen?"
Seeing his reaction, Old Pan laughed: "Alright, don’t be scared. I was just asking. Seeing that you’ve got the potential to be a great soldier, I was just asking if you’re interested. If you’re definitely not, then let’s just drop it for now and maybe discuss it later!"
Although he said this, Yan Fei could still see a hint of regret in Old Pan’s eyes.
Can’t really deny that anyone capable of catching rabbits bare-handed, skilled in fishing, and having Herculean strength is indeed one in a hundred thousand! To not send him to the military is quite a regret, especially to someone like Old Pan, who emerged from the military service and served as a junior minister for most of his life.
Taking advantage of the situation, Yan Fei quickly excused himself.
Doing well isn’t always a good thing! Stand out too much in the militia and he might get targeted. Lucky, he’s underage, otherwise, it would’ve been really risky for him.
He left the small court of the Armed Department sullenly, and Yan Fei started ranting about Heizi in his heart.
It’s all because of him! Telling him to play by the book and fully exploit his advantages, he asked him to think about any other strategies in anticipation of the two guys who were chased by the tiger causing a racket in the city. Not doing anything and passively waiting for their accusations is not the way of his cattle farm!
In the end, the best person Heizi could think of to turn to for help was Old Pan. Little did he know that his first proactive action would result in a defeat worse than the Waterloo Battle and a near miss with the draft!
However, Yan Fei was not someone who shirks responsibility when something goes wrong. He knew it was Heizi’s suggestion, but the decision was his. He had nobody but himself to blame for failing to navigate these waters.
After returning, he didn’t wait for Heizi and Miss Xu Xiaoyan to ask and informed them of the outcome.
Miss Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t stop laughing and comforted him, "It’s not a bad thing. At least your visit may just prompt them to make another inquiry call. The more people who speak on your behalf, the less you have to worry about. It’s ultimately a good thing! As for wanting you to join the army, that’s a testament to your prowess! Besides, you’re still young and there’s no need to worry about this right now. You have plenty of time before you become eligible to join the army."
Perhaps feeling guilty for suggesting the idea that resulted in Yan Fei’s ’peril’, Heizi appeared quite embarrassed: "I had no idea that you’re so daredevil now. They take the initiative to speak for us without even needing to be asked, and then even try to recruit you! Now you have the police station and the Armed Department on your side, we don’t have to worry at all."
Yan Fei understood this all too well but couldn’t shake off the unease. He lounged in the chair for a while, stroking the head of the tiger, from which he got a new idea: "I’m going to see the people from the county’s Forestry Bureau. I’ll go there early tomorrow. It also happens to be the day Xiaochao goes back to school, so I can drop by the Forestry Bureau. They need to give me an answer!"
Heizi and Miss Xu were puzzled: "What kind of answer are you looking for?"
Touching his chin and wearing a contemplative look, Yan Fei’s next words almost made the duo burst out laughing: "I’m not sure, but they were the ones who told me to raise this tiger. If I don’t make a fuss and they forget about me, then what? I just want to bother them and see what they do!"
