Chapter 364: Chapter 79 The Murderer with Dull Mind and Poor Popularity_2
From what I can see, the changes in the cattle ranch in less than a year are truly remarkable!
Even Ma Chao didn’t take it seriously, let alone Yan Fei. After lying in the sun for a while, Yan Fei got up in a languid manner: "Okay, I’ll go check it out, are you coming with me or do you want to stay here and sunbathe a bit longer?"
Ma Chao was so sun-drained he didn’t want to move, nor was he interested in the spectacle. Plus, it was not like there was anything worth watching. Except for squinting when Yan Fei got up, he couldn’t be bothered to make any extra effort: "You just go and get rid of him, he’s an idiot, nothing to see. I’ll stay here and watch, and leave when you come back."
Yan Fei nodded, got up lazily, got on the motorbike, and headed towards the cattle ranch.
As soon as he left, Ma Chao started to move around.
He lay on the wicker chair just like Yan Fei did moments ago, but got up lazily in the same manner, and then turned to the two perplexingly large dogs, "Don’t you think your master’s vibe just now was kind of different? Why do I feel like he’s changed a bit since I last saw him a few days ago?"
This usually honest man laughed at his own jest for once, then lay down on the wicker chair again, propped up his leg and chin, his face full of pondering bemusement. "He didn’t grow taller, did he? Why does his vibe feel different?"
Yan Fei was on his motorbike, not yet at the ranch when he heard the voices inside.
Heizi was pouring tea for the ’idiot’ Ma Chao referred to while he was also trying to persuade him: "Big bro don’t rush, just wait a little longer. Our boss will be here soon, I’m telling you! Our boss is really rich, feel free to ask for any salary you want, don’t worry about asking for three hundred or five hundred yuan, even three thousand or five thousand yuan, he won’t blink an eyelid. Don’t rush, he’ll be here soon, have some tea and take a break first!"
As Yan Fei rode his motorbike into the courtyard, the guy immediately distanced himself, "Quick look, he’s here. You better tell him what you want quickly, as none of us make decisions around here, only he can call the shots!"
The entire lot of these guys were really waiting for something funny to happen, all of them had left the inner courtyard and were standing in one corner waiting, including Gong Hanqing’s old grandpa. They were all eyeing the hefty dude sitting by the table at the front door of Yan Fei’s house.
The dude, appearing unperturbed on hearing that the boss was here, grumbled, "So what if he’s here? What’s the rush? Tell him, I want five hundred yuan a month, I’ll come and guard the door when I’m free, and I can’t guarantee I’ll show up when I’m not..."
By the time Yan Fei got off his motorbike and slowly made his way over, this guy just glanced in this direction while talking, then raised his tea cup to sip and moisten his throat. Halfway through the sip, he suddenly squinted, stopped talking, and stared at Yan Fei without blinking.
Until Yan Fei slowly walked up to him.
As he looked at Yan Fei, Yan Fei was also looking at him.
This troublemaker looking for a fight was indeed quite sturdy.
Even though the weather was cold, the guy was still wearing a short sleeve shirt, his brawny arms exposed, and his clothes fitted tightly to his muscular body, as if he was not a man but a stone statue. Although he was sitting, it was easy to tell that this guy was exceptionally tall and big, a strapping, swarthy man.
As for his appearance, if his hair and beard were a bit longer, you would believe it if he said he was Li Kui from Water Margin or Zhang Fei from the Three Kingdoms.
The guy was not only strong, but he also had a natural, fierce aura about him. He looked incredibly fierce, and the rumor that he had killed people and served prison time seemed true.
But all these were to the average man. To a monster who just killed a twenty-ton Sarcosuchus and ate its meat till he’s fed up, he really didn’t take this guy seriously.
Walking up to him, Yan Fei asked, "Are you here to pick a fight? Thinking of extorting some money?"
This burly man had been sitting there, looking all high and mighty. When he heard Yan Fei’s question, he surprisingly nodded honestly, "Not exactly extorting. I just got out, and I’m out of food. Thought I could work as a gatekeeper at your ranch, just to get by."
Before Yan Fei could speak, Heizi and a few people behind him were whispering to each other, looking completely puzzled: "This man was talking tough just now, how come he’s suddenly so amiable?"
Yan Fei was not surprised, and nodded at the man’s admission: "Have you killed before?"
The sturdy man reflexively nodded, then sharply shook his head: "It wasn’t intentional. The court proclaimed I was exercising self-defense, just that it was excessive and I accidentally killed someone. They were scamming people on the streets. When they couldn’t deceive me, they tried to extort me. I hit back in self-defense... No, they hit me first. I was sentenced for twenty years, but with good behavior I was released in less than ten."
"Hmm!" Yan Fei nodded again. "Do you know Kung Fu?"
It makes sense that he was not a murderer, considering the timeframe of his conviction – it was the peak of severe punishment. Anyone who dared to murder would never have gone to jail, he would have been executed immediately.
"I’ve been practicing since I was little! But, it was just agrarian techniques." The sturdy man answered modestly. "My parents died when I was young, I had to rely on strength to earn a living. Then after that incident, I spent all my time in prison. I don’t know how to do anything else, heard about this place from fellow inmates."
"Who told you about this place?" Yan Fei was curious now.
"A few cattle thieves who were locked up last year. They were weaklings, frequently bullied in prison. Out of sympathy, I instructed my comrades to lower their torments, and they were grateful for it. Hearing about my concerns of getting food upon release, they suggested this."
"They told you about my ranch?"
"No, they couldn’t possibly know there was a ranch here, I found it out myself."
"Who did you ask?"
"Well, I could never betray a friend!" This guy was suddenly behaving high and mighty, checking Yan Fei’s face carefully. When he saw Yan Fei’s indifference, he added: "Can I not reveal that?"
"Forget it! I won’t ask anymore." Yan Fei looked at the man’s cautious expression and lost interest in prying further.
Whoever manipulated this man into coming here was either setting him up, or harboring ill intentions towards the ranch.
If they harbored ill intentions, they probably thought the convict-turned-ruffian could stir up trouble, being known for his brawling skills. But Yan Fei was not concerned about these cowards who dared not show their faces; he trusted that he would eventually find out the truth.
Since his arrival at the ranch, this man had behaved in a genuine manner, which puzzled Heizi and the others. Noticing that the conversation did not grow heated, Heizi shouted from the side: "Brother Fei, he’s here for the security guard position we got, which pays five hundred a month. He’d come whenever he’s free. Aren’t you going to comment on that?"
This fellow reveled in creating chaos.
The sturdy man, already quite nervous, immediately began to argue when he heard Heizi, "That was just a joke, really. If you need a security guard, I won’t require a salary, just provide me with meals."
"We don’t need a security guard here." Yan Fei was about to tell him to leave, but after a second thought and a glance at the man’s muscular stature, he changed his mind abruptly. "But you’ve come all this way, might as well stay. Help out by feeding the cattle. What’s your name? Where are you from?"
"Gao Rui! From Cheng Guan Town." Gao Rui initially looked relieved when Yan Fei mentioned not needing a security guard, thinking he would be allowed to leave. However, Yan Fei changing his mind dampened his spirits.
"What? You’re not willing to work here for me? If not, work harder. If you perform well, I might release you when I’m in a good mood. Alright, I’ll remember your name, just do your job well! Even if I’m not here, don’t think about running away. Run monk but can’t run temple, I could find you sooner or later."
