Chapter 344: Chapter 64 Ancestors were Craftsmen_1

After lunch, Yan Fei lay lazily on his wicker chair.

Though it may seem like he’s dozing off, in reality, he’s extremely busy.

Just by looking at the variety of oddly shaped rocks that kept appearing and disappearing around him, one could tell what he was busy with - of course, it was the valley renovation project.

He couldn’t do this kind of work outside, but it was just right in the vegetable greenhouse. He could see the outside from inside, but no one could see the inside from a distance.

Yan Fei couldn’t be more satisfied! This thing seemed specifically designed for people like him, people who preferred their covert activities to remain unseen!

The two dogs were guarding the door outside, so he could confidently renovate the valley without fearing that someone would see his absurd display.

Reworking seemed easy as, indeed, cleaning up stones was much easier than clearing trees. The method Yan Fei used allowed him to clear a frightening amount of stones in a single day. However, this task also had its difficulties. The place Yan Fei named ’Stone Valley’ had too many stones.

As for Yan Fei, large stones weren’t problematic, but there were too many pebbles. Fist-sized pebbles were the most troublesome; too big to be called small, too small to be big. Clearing them up could really give someone a headache.

As for the places that had been cleaned, uneven ground left by moving the rocks wasn’t a big issue. When Yan Fei leveled the land at night, he could mix in plenty of cow dung as base fertilizer, which was convenient.

However, the amount of cow dung that a hectare of worms could use was too meager. The output of two or three cows was probably sufficient. Heizi and his team were oblivious to this; they only knew they had to transport cow dung here, and now there was nowhere to use the surplus.

Other than occasionally piling some surplus cow dung on open ground, Yan Fei put the excess dung into Stone Valley - after all, nobody was counting the amount of cow dung transported here.

As his actions became more noticeable, the valley’s original inhabitants voluntarily fled. This provided him with the perfect opportunity to seal the entrance of the valley.

After the National Day holiday came the Autumn Harvest. Outside of visiting his grandparent’s home with his parents, all of Yan Fei’s time and energy seemed to be spent on the two greenhouses. However, he was actually focused on this Stone Valley that only he knew about.

Even with all of this, at the end of the month, Yan Fei had only managed to tidy up one small corner of the Stone Valley—though that corner did contain more than a hundred acres of land.

With fewer trees and more stones in the valley, it was almost completely visible. With no other active dinosaurs in the valley, and the entrance basically sealed off, the valley was already starting to resemble a vegetable base—even those water outlets, which were separated by Yan Fei, now looked like underground tributaries.

Of course, the renovations were not just limited to these changes. After being busy for so long, Yan Fei would feel ashamed if he only managed to clear that little amount of land.

The stream in the valley was also deepened and widened by Yan Fei. Both banks were fortified with stones to ensure that any sudden surge upstream would be smoothly channeled away once it reached the valley, preventing any damage to the valley.

There was no reason to rush the remaining work. After all, this amount of land was already ample for use. Retaining a portion of the original landscape could also help conceal the new vegetable garden.

Future renovations still needed to be done. At the very least, increased protection measures had to be enforced for the vegetable garden. Furthermore, another ditch needed to be dug from a small pond under a waterfall to ensure an adequate water supply for the vegetable garden—after all, Yan Fei did not want No.1 Coolie and No.2 Coolie to be seen as snacks by the occasional passing pterosaur when they were getting water.

Yan Fei was always looking out for his coolies. He built a stone cave for both No.1 Coolie and No.2 Coolie next to the vegetable garden. Though it was a bit crude, at least it would give them some sense of security—burning certain plants in an enclosed space can effectively ward off insects. Dangerous insects might visit at night, and unlike Yan Fei, No.1 Coolie and No.2 Coolie weren’t invincible.

When Yan Fei tossed them into their new place and handed them seeds, he kindly reminded them, "Be careful when you’re growing vegetables here in the future. Don’t go to the waterfall unless you need to. Um, things sometimes fall from above."

With a teasing tone, he added, "Oh, by the way, this thing. You can think of a way to process it and hang it at the entrance of the cave. It will make a pretty strong curtain."

The two coolies looked at what Yan Fei was pointing to, and their faces became a mixture of shock and speechlessness—it was a skin of a python, over 10 meters long.

Yan Fei expressed his own helplessness. Who would have thought that while renovating the valley, a huge python would fall from the waterfall with its prey in its grasp!

He sure did capture two preys at once. Even the dogs got to taste python meat. As for whether the two men could sleep well knowing that a python this big could fall from the waterfall, Yan Fei didn’t have the time to consider such a thing.

If only the two coolies knew how to process the python skin. If well-prepared, just a section of the python skin could make a sleeping bag! This python was smaller than the one Yan Fei had transformed, but it was still big enough to make five or six sleeping bags. It would provide excellent protection against mosquito bites.

When Yan Fei was about to leave, he saw No.1 Coolie raising his arm, looking at him with a face of anticipation. Yan Fei couldn’t help but ask, "What is it?"

No.1 Coolie and No.2 Coolie are the names Yan Fei bestowed upon them. At this point, asking for their real names seemed rather pointless.

No.1 Coolie, the big brother, cautiously asked when Yan Fei probed, "Can I have something else? I need tools to process this python skin!"

Yan Fei was curious, "Can you really process this python skin?"

He didn’t keep the python skin to scare them or for them to make a curtain. It was quite simple. If you wanted to eat a snake, you must skin it, and the skin is incredibly easy to strip. You could tear from the head and peel it all the way to the tail, it remained intact without a scratch.

No.1 Coolie bobbed his head in affirmation, grinning, "My ancestors were craftsmen, they passed on the skill of making the Erhu. I have some knowledge about handling python skin. But I need some tools. I wonder if your highness could provide those."

"Can you speak normally? I mean just ask directly for what you need." Yan Fei felt goosebumps as he heard the man’s submissive speech. However, he always had respect for craftsmen–even if he didn’t understand the connection between an Erhu and python skin.

"Since you are a craftsman, I won’t expect you to work as hard as him. If you can manage to cook, I’ll give you an extra egg each day as a bonus."

No.1 Coolie was overjoyed, nodding his head and listing the items he required. Even though Yan Fei only gave them leftovers or failed cooking attempts, it was enough for both of them to feel full and satisfied.

His joy didn’t solely lie in receiving an egg. It was Yan Fei’s change of attitude, which let him understand that as long as he remained useful, there was hope for better days.

After he spoke, Yan Fei nodded, "Alright. I’ll bring them here later. Since you are a craftsman, why did you even choose to break the law? You are responsible for your suffering!"

Upon hearing this, No.1 Coolie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry: "I was confused, I was confused..."

"I have something to say too!" Seeing No.1 Coolie receive an ’extraordinary treatment’ of one egg, No.2 Coolie couldn’t resist. "I used to work at a forge when I was younger!"

Seeing Yan Fei’s peculiar stare, the little bit of courage No.2 Coolie managed to conjure up disappeared. With a morose expression, he meekly said, "Well... working at a forge counts as a craft too, right?"

Yan Fei was pleased, "Nice, very nice. Forging is definitely an impressive craft, top-tier. You can be assured that I’ll be more generous in your case. I’ll give you three eggs! I’ll get a cooking pot for you two. Once we get some firewood, you can cook. Forging is physically demanding, I’ll give you more meat."

The firewood he mentioned were the plants from the recent clean-up of the valley. The weather here was excellent, the earliest cleaned ones were now dried up and would be perfect for burning.

After speaking, he glanced at the stone cave, nodding, "This place is a bit small, I’ll construct a larger stone cave for you, it can serve as your forge. I’ll create a chicken coup for you as well, I’ll give you some chickens to rear so you won’t run out of eggs. Now, do you need anything else? Just say it, if it is within my limits, I’ll fulfill it."

No.2 Coolie was already overjoyed, bobbing his head, "No more, no more..."

No.1 Coolie couldn’t help but feel a bit bitter: The same craftsmen, but the difference is huge! How is it that my inherited skill of making the Erhu and what’s more, be able to process skins, is less valuable than a brute who had only swung a big hammer for a few days?

Of course, he didn’t say this out loud, firstly because he didn’t dare to, and secondly because he and No.2 Coolie had a ’deep bond of battle’– Besides, since they were now brothers in adversity, when one of them gained a benefit, it was bound to eventually mean good for the other.

The two laborers didn’t know that the man they thought was a deity, takes great pride in his lineage of being from a blacksmith’s family. If he finds out that No.1 Coolie was looking down upon a blacksmith’s work, the laborer should hope that the blacksmith’s mood doesn’t sour, threatening his chance of survival for the future!

Yan Fei’s mood determined his efficiency.

Very soon, in front of the two laborers, massive stones began appearing out of thin air. In no time, they made way for an even more substantial stone cave.

Alongside appeared pots, bowls, ladles, and many other kinds of utensils.

What amazed them the most, was the pile of blacksmithing equipment that appeared before their eyes. It’s like a well-equipped blacksmith shop materialized within moments in front of them– surprisingly, it even had a signboard above it, on which the bold black and white characters pronounced: Stone Valley Blacksmith Shop.

The ink hadn’t even dried yet.

Yan Fei’s mood was quite cheery, he never expected both his laborers to possess some craft. It’s no wonder that people said, the harder the criminal, the more significant his skills.

As for the miraculous signboard, how could a forge be without one? Of course, they couldn’t use his family emblem, so a makeshift one will do for now!
