Chapter 328: Chapter 48 We’re going to be rich, right? _1
After Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan left the flower market, they headed straight to the antique city.
It’s not that these two people were particularly idle, but Xu Xiaoyan pointed out that the route to her two sisters’ school conveniently passed through the antique city.
Her sisters had previously invited her to their school for a visit during vacation. Hence, she planned to stop by and see her sisters while at the antique city, with the intention to have dinner with them later.
The biggest advantage of the provincial city roads is their clear directions: north, south, east, and west, which save those without a sense of direction from getting lost. Needless to say, it’s also more convenient for everyone finding directions.
While passing the Memorial Tower in the city center, Xu Xiaoyan wanted to take a look inside, stating it was usually closed for public viewing. However, after seeing the long queue, she gave up before Yan Fei even had the chance to dissuade her.
On reaching the antique city, Yan Fei’s first impression was that the buildings were impressive.
The antique city entrance was adorned with antiquated charm. The provincial city, with its deep history, had certainly done a commendable job in maintaining this appeal. It took him half a circle around the boundary to find a place to park his bicycle. They walked a bit from the side entrance and Yan Fei had his second impression.
It turns out this was a junk trading market!
After walking a bit more, they realized that they had entered the wrong gate. They should have used the other entrance.
This small road was filled with people leaving the market, browsing the roadside stalls as they passed. The items on the tables were exactly why Yan Fei had called it a junk market.
Two people who knew nothing about antiques visiting the antique city was really just for the spectacle. They would gravitate to wherever there appeared to be a crowd or lively chatter.
While looking around, they reached a few connected stalls. Both of them exchanged glances in surprise, then silently watched other people bartering and haggling.
Listening to the prices being quoted, Xu Xiaoyan’s grip on Yan Fei’s hand became tighter as she became sweaty.
Only after the crowd had thinned significantly did the young woman look at Yan Fei with some uncertainty and uttered, "We’re going to get rich, right? You are keeping all those items safe, aren’t you?"
Yan Fei nodded, "Let’s continue looking around, maybe we can check out the shops."
No wonder the antique market was so attractive! There was a multitude of treasures here.
There were exotic and beautiful porcelain pieces, vintage wooden furniture, naturally formed jade that seemed to defy human craftsmanship, worm-eaten and mouse-gnawed books, rusty metallic artifacts. Everything from large stone lions, wooden beds and screens to small copper coins, earrings, and pendant. A wide assortment of items, indeed.
Of course, there were also items claimed to be from the Shang and Zhou Dynasty, but one could not tell if they were really from a week ago. Even Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan, who knew nothing about antiques, could tell that these items were pretty new, yet they were peddled by the stall owners as being hundreds or even thousands of years old.
While Yan Fei was idly taking in the surroundings, Miss Xu Xiaoyan was focused on finding certain items. Some items in the shop had a price tagged on them, while most did not. They didn’t inquire about the prices, choosing instead just to browse.
It wasn’t until Yan Fei could no longer bear being dragged around by her that he softly encouraged her, "The antiques aren’t going anywhere. Why are you so nervous?"
Only then did she seem to snap back to reality, looking at Yan Fei with a slightly worried expression, she whispered, "I was just thinking, if those things we have are really valuable, couldn’t we buy more cows? Besides, didn’t you lend Yangyang a few hundred yuan today because of me? I always cause trouble for you. If we become rich in the future, you can focus on your studies without working so hard, okay?"
Yan Fei laughed, "You’re silly! It’s only tough when there’s no money. With money, it’s going to be less tough. We can hire more people to help us, then we can just stay at home and count our money! Right now, we’re just waiting on the vegetable greenhouse and worm breeding. If those turn out well, I won’t have to be around all the time. When that happens, I’ll be the master, commanding my apprentices to work. Whoever wants to learn the trade has to work for free for three years first!"
His words amused the young woman, who rolled her eyes at him, "Nowadays it’s not like before, where you learned a trade and had to work without pay for three years. Don’t fantasize!"
Yan Fei chuckled twice, "Just enjoy browsing and don’t worry about anything. That money is not a big deal, don’t think too much. You can consider it doing a good deed! See, all the good deeds we did before are now being rewarded. Besides, I make money so you can spend it. If we earn more in the future, you can even use it to heat our house in the winter..."
"Nonsense again, right?" The young woman looked at him with annoyance, again dragged him by the hand and started moving through the market.
"Slow down, let me hear the prices to get a feel for it." Yan Fei gently led the young woman, asking her to hold his hand and walk slowly. He, on the other hand, was all ears, catching any useful information amidst the cacophony around them.
"Turn left in front, where that big crowd is." After listening for a while, Yan Fei advised the young woman.
The maiden led him over, only to look at the stall and glance with astonishment at Yan Fei, who was brimming with self-satisfaction.
"Shush! Don’t speak, just watch!" Yan Fei stopped the girl from speaking.
The maiden rolled her eyes, suppressing a giggle to let him know she understood.
After listening quietly for a while, Yan Fei reminded her again, "Go take a look inside the shop with the large blue porcelain vase at the entrance."
She quickly walked over with him, and sure enough, as expected, someone was buying the items they were interested in.
By the time Yan Fei reminded the maiden for the third time, she began treating it as a game, cheerfully tugging him along, following his directions to turn left and right.
It was truly miraculous!
In the bustling crowd of the market, one could not know what a stall was selling unless they squeezed their way to the front. Yet, the person she was pulling along, with ears sharper than a dog’s, could just stand among the crowd and know where to find what he wanted to hear.
Sometimes she watched those mythological characters with Gale Ears on television, who could tilt their ears to one side and hear conversations from miles away. Such astounding powers, even the girl’s family would inevitably harbor some fantasies and yearnings for them, right?
The maiden was so thrilled to be running around with Yan Fei that she lost track of time, waiting with an eager face for him to speak after each visit.
Finally, Yan Fei, with a helpless grimace, said, "Alright, don’t you still have to find your sister? There’s no one left, okay? My ears are buzzing now, I can’t hear anything."
The maiden paused, looked at the sky, then looked around, and finally checked the time, "Oh, it’s really late, let’s go quickly. We can’t miss dinner."
As they rode a bike out the door, the maiden was still mumbling, "Yan Xiaofei, how are your ears so magical?"
"Of course, it’s because my senses have been sharpened from martial arts training! You don’t train, so what can I do?" Yan Fei insisted confidently.
"But I have been practicing! I do yoga in the dormitory every day, and they are all learning from me!" The maiden complained pitifully. "The school doesn’t have a place for me, a girl, to practice martial arts. It wouldn’t look right if people saw!"
"What are you afraid of? Once we have the money, we’ll buy a courtyard here and you can practice there!" Yan Fei declared unabashedly.
"Humph, boasting again!" The maiden knew he was bluffing, but it still filled her with joy. "Besides, you said your ears were buzzing earlier. Are you alright? You shouldn’t do this in the future. The marketplace is too noisy. It must be tiring for you to listen like that...I was too excited just now, I forgot about how hard it would be for you to listen attentively..."
"It’s okay, if I couldn’t hear, could I still talk to you?" Yan Fei comforted the maiden. "When I get the chance, I’ll demonstrate my Thousand-Mile Vision to you, let you see how impressive I am!"
"Really? How far can you see?" The maiden was initially surprised, but then she thought of something and couldn’t help but ask, "Yan Xiaofei, why are you so amazing? Don’t tell me you’re like those TV creatures who have Thousand-Mile Vision and Gale Ears— a demon?"
Yan Fei thought for a while, then honestly answered, "Yes! Not only am I a demon, I’m a demon way more powerful than them. They only have Thousand-Mile Vision and Gale Ears, but I can do all of that and others too—even the Seventy-two Changes!"
A honest person, never lying!
The maiden was acting silly behind him, playfully scratching him, "Demon, where are you running? Let’s see if I can catch you! Show me a monkey first..."
"A monkey..." Yan Fei made a bitter face. "That, I really can’t do!"
The maiden just giggled non-stop, "A lesson for your bragging! You can’t do this? Then what can you do?"
Yan Fei confessed honestly, "I can do quite a few! From dinosaurs and crocodiles to butterflies and dragonflies, and critters that fly, run, or swim, I can turn into many. And there will be more in the future!"
Laughing endlessly, the maiden took his honest admission as a fairy tale.
