Chapter 324: Chapter 44: The Scholar’s Rebellion_1
Yan Fei’s good mood lasted only for one night, and was spoiled first thing in the morning on the first day of National Day.
"What? You haven’t decided yet? We agreed to go out and have fun today, didn’t we?" Yan Fei looked at Xu Xiaoyan, feeling annoyed. "Let them take their time and decide! Such indecisiveness, it’s like an unsuccessful scholar. You’re all college students, this simple little matter takes you days to work out?"
"It’s a matter concerning dozens of households, how can it be a minor issue? It needs a good discussion!" Xu Xiaoyan was also frustrated. "Not everyone can act like you, doing whatever they want! Even if you want to do business, there are still many difficulties!"
"What difficulties?" Yan Fei was extremely frustrated. Look at this mess! He came early in the morning, excited to take his wife shopping, only to find out that the matter regarding Little Dark-skinned Girl hadn’t been settled yet, and they planned to continue discussing it in the morning!
"There are many issues! It’s not as simple as you think!" Xu Xiaoyan argued. "There are so many people in the village, none of them have ever done any small businesses, who should be assigned to sell stuff? How to transport them here? Where to live and eat once they arrive here? What about their families back home? All of them have old and young at home, who’s going to work there if everyone leaves?"
Yan Fei was speechless, but Xu Xiaoyan continued, "Right, should the popcorn be made at home or here? What if it doesn’t sell? What if something happens when they are here, far away from home? And also..."
"Okay, okay, I get it. Is this something you guys thought of in your dorm, or did you discuss it with the people in the village?" Yan Fei quickly stopped the girl from speaking any further. If she kept going, he would have thought they were planning some major event, not selling peanuts as street vendors.
"Of course, we discussed it in our dorm! The village doesn’t even have a phone, they have no idea! We have to finish discussing this, then let Yangyang go back and tell them!" Xu Xiaoyan said matter-of-factly.
Yan Fei almost choked on her words, "They don’t even know, and you guys have been worrying about hundreds of problems here? Do you really think this can be done?"
"What do you know? We are analysing the problems first, and then solving them one by one. Once all the problems have been thought through, everything will go much smoother. Besides, if we solve their future worries before they arrive here, they can get started right away without worry. Isn’t this better? Otherwise, what’s the point of us making such a great effort?" Xu Xiaoyan explained ’reasonably’ to Yan Fei.
Yan Fei felt like he was going to throw up blood. He took the girl a few steps back, away from the bustle of the people coming and going.
He took a deep breath, feeling like he wouldn’t spit out a mouthful of old blood, and started to talk to the girl, "The simplest way is to bring a few people with goods over, rent a place to eat and live, then start selling. The worst case scenario is losing the travel and rental costs, even if the goods can’t be sold, they’re still theirs. They will sell anyway, it’s just the quantity that’s in question. Do you really need to consider so much?"
"You have no idea how poor Yangyang’s place is. Her college tuition was pooled by the entire village. Where is the money for renting a house? Let alone eating and staying here, it costs so much in the Provincial City."
Yan Fei thought about Xu Xiaoyan’s college tuition, and then thought about the ’dozens of households’ in Little Dark-skinned Girl’s village that Xu Xiaoyan mentioned. He was about to sympathise with their poverty, when he heard Xu Xiaoyan add: "Oh yes, they haven’t collected enough for her tuition fees yet, I heard they also borrowed a part of it."
Alright! They are indeed very poor. Yan Fei really had nothing to say; they were so poor and yet managed to support a college student, it was really not easy.
Xu Xiaoyan added, "Our classmate Yangyang is the hardest working one among us. She doesn’t even have enough money for living expenses, she always has to work part-time. She mostly just eats buns and the cafeteria’s free soup, and sometimes she doesn’t even eat. We all want to help her!"
"Stick to the point, the point." Yan Fei stopped the girl from talking any further. Was it helpful talking about this? If they remained so poor but only thought about the many difficulties, wouldn’t they deserve to remain poor?" She lives how far from here? Can’t afford to take a bus, they should bring their quilts and food and walk here. If they have nowhere to live here, they can live under the eaves by the road or in a cave, right? Once money is made, everything is fine. If not, they can go back. How simple is that?"
Without even thinking, Xu Xiaoyan responded: "How could that work? It’s hundreds of miles away! Besides, it’s not safe to sleep outside, and what if they get sick?"
Yan Fei retorted unhappily, "If ten or so strong laborers come and lie down by the side of the road, it’s others who will feel unsafe, right?"
Seeing that the sun was already rising high, their precious time would be wasted arguing in front of this shabby dormitory. Yan Fei tried to persuade the girl, "If they want to make money, they have to work hard! When I first started, didn’t I spend whole nights running after rabbits in the wilderness? No matter if it was windy or snowy, I still ran, and no one helped me! Now, they still have you all to give them ideas, that’s good enough!"
Of course, I didn’t tell her that I was able to catch so many rabbits due to my ability to perform seventy-two transformations, others wouldn’t catch nearly as much even if they worked themselves to death.
The girl’s eyes reddened, "Yan Xiaofei, sorry! I know you worked hard, and I couldn’t help much, I will definitely be good to you in the future. After I finish my studies, I will return and help you..."
Yan Fei didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, "I’m discussing them, them! What’s it got to do with you?"
She gave her an idea, "You go up and convey my words to them. They can decide whether to do it or not. Which farmer is not tough? This bit of hardship is nothing. If anything, let them apply for a loan, or borrow money, rent a house here. Usually you guys help out more, and let Little Dark-skinned Girl organize the people who come, and act promptly if there are any difficulties."
The girl nodded, "Wait for me, I will go and tell them this first."
"Okay, okay, hurry up and come back. Look at the time!" Yan Fei urged her to hurry up.
The girl really was quick. Yan Fei felt like he had only waited for less than twenty years when she came back down, "Yangyang said that they are not afraid of hard work, but the people from there have never traveled far nor have done any business! Also, they cannot get a loan or borrow money. Besides, they don’t want to borrow any more, for fear that they can’t repay the loan!"
Yan Fei was truly impatient, "Then let them continue to figure things out, you ask them whether they want to do it or not? If they want to do it, they can bring their stuff and come here. If not, they would stay at home. I don’t believe that money falls from the sky nor gold bars grow from the ground. By sticking to that poor village, they can become rich? Are they really waiting for money to fall from the sky and gold bars to grow from the ground?"
