Chapter 306: Chapter 26 You are a Good Person (Congratulations to QiQi Yanning, the Alliance leader!)_1

Guided by Teacher Guan Yue seated behind him, Yan Fei rode the motorcycle around the potholed little paths in the village.

In the end, he agreed to this female teacher’s request. Of course, this wasn’t because she was attractive, rather it was mainly because Teacher Guan had told him quite a bit about Gong Hanqing’s family circumstances.

Although only two members of the family remained, there was some savings that could support Gong Hanqing’s schooling until graduation from junior high school. However, Hanqing’s grandpa had cataracts and was alone at home, which made Hanqing worry. Besides, if Hanqing went to school, no one would work on the farmland, and surely they could not sit idle and eat away their livelihood. It would make their already tough life even more insecure.

Teacher Guan Yue thought that having Hanqing work for Yan Fei wouldn’t need a hefty wage. Merely food and lodging would be substantial, giving both of them some sort of hope. Otherwise, the elderly and the young, the two of them working in the fields, that life would indeed become hopelessly bleak.

Just like Yan Fei couldn’t bear to leave his own land uncultivated and had decided to plant greenhouse vegetables, Teacher Guan Yue could not bear to see a good student of hers waste their potential.

Anyway, Yan Fei agreed for now. They would be paid if they could work, if not, they wouldn’t. It amounted to feeding two more mouths, which wasn’t much.

"I can also apply to the school. For students in special circumstances like him, only the textbook fees would be charged and a part of miscellaneous expenses would be waived..." Perhaps Teacher Guan felt that she had caused trouble for Yan Fei, she continued speaking from behind him. "At the intersection ahead, a left turn will take us there, their house is a one-and-a-half-story small building..."

Her speech abruptly halted.

Yan Fei had already seen the house Teacher Guan had spoken about, a crowd of idlers surrounded it. It was bustling, making him wonder what was going on.

"Did something happen? Yan Fei, please stop quickly, let me get off..." Guan Yue, after a pause, ignored everything else. As she spoke, she patted Yan Fei on the back to expedite him.

It was dark, and the poor headlight of the motorcycle did not deter Yan Fei. The real issue was the poor condition of the country road. With his teacher seated behind him, he didn’t dare speed from the moment they entered the village. They weren’t going quickly at all!

As soon as Guan Yue got off the motorcycle, she ran over and began to shout at the outside of the crowd, "What happened to them? I am Teacher Guan Yue from Gong Hanqing’s school. I came over this noon. Can you all please give way for me to go inside?"

The people at the periphery who were discussing animatedly made way for her to pass. As Teacher Guan was walking into the crowd, a voice rang out, "Is this the teacher who came at noon? She’s clearly just a young girl! With all the misfortune that has befallen them, what is she doing here? If it wasn’t for her visit, would old Gong even have thought of jumping into the pit?"

The concerned look on Teacher Guan’s face instantly turned ugly.

She paused, then continued to squeeze through the crowd, but her head was low and her steps were not as hurried as before.

That woman’s comment was made loudly and after she spoke, several people echoed her sentiments. Side by side, they moved aside for Teacher Guan, curious to see what she looked like. This allowed her, with her head down, to easily reach the front door.

Just then, the sound of the motorcycle behind suddenly roared louder, and a dim headlight beam pierced through the crowd.

Seeing the approaching motorcycle showed no sign of slowing down, the crowd, who had been loitering around the door, cried out and quickly scrambled to the sides.

The motorcycle stopped right at the entrance, and Yan Fei got off. Someone reproached him, "Hey man, how are you riding a motorcycle? Can’t you see so many people are here?"

After turning off the motor and parking the motorcycle, Yan Fei turned around and shouted, "I am Yan Fei from the cattle farm at the bridgehead. Who the hell just yapped on while watching the spectacle, step out and show yourself..."

The crowd became instantly quiet, with any accusing voices disappearing entirely.

The crowd had not recognized him on the motorcycle, but now they had a clear view. Even if he didn’t announce who he was, people would recognize him.

Who else but Yan Fei, who owns the cattle farm, have this stature?

The first two people he bound and threw under the bridge were from this village, as was the person selling vegetables at the door of Xu Xiaoyan’s house that he had disciplined, and the person who rented the land to him a few days ago.

Most of those who usually delivered manure were also from this village. Besides, this village had to pass the cattle farm whenever they went to the market, so there were quite a few villagers who recognize Yan Fei.

Now, seeing him angry, those unaware were reminded by the people beside them in whispers. No one dared to step out and let him take a look.

That’s what sets this village apart from others: it’s next to the Provincial Road. They say they’re all from the same village, but in reality, most of them have moved here from elsewhere. With more people comes more chaos and less unity. In other villages, in such situations, there’d at least be someone to smooth things over; but here, when they saw that someone had offended Yan Fei, not a single person stepped up to say something nice.

Seeing that no one spoke up, Yan Fei waved his hand: "Go home, all of you! There’s been a death here, anywhere you look. Do you guys get a kick out of trouble? If any of you are willing to help, now is not the time. Go, go..."

Then, he turned around and walked through the main gate himself.

He’s becoming more and more imposing, and he’s also a lot more polite than back when he would lash out at the drop of a hat.

Once inside, he saw that there were still quite a few people around. Everyone had seen what had happened outside, and now they were all silent as he entered. He ignored them and went straight into the house.

Before he could get inside, an old man rose from his seat: "Young Boss Yan has arrived! Come, come, take a seat inside..."

It was the village party secretary who had ’kindly’ advised him a few days ago to give up his lease and cut his losses.

Once inside, Yan Fei realized that his assumptions had been off.

Gong Hanqing’s grandfather, after suddenly finding himself left with just one family member, had been a bit suicidal. Adding to this was the fact that his grandson wasn’t attending school, which he attributed to his own failings—he thought that if he died and left his savings to his grandson, the boy would be able to go to school, or at least complete junior high school.

Then Teacher Guan made another visit, which sent the old man further into despair. The teacher said his grandson was a promising student and he is to blame for the boy’s wasted education. The guilt was so overwhelming, the old man harbored suicidal thoughts.

While his grandson was busy cooking dinner one evening, he went out. Walking to the outskirts of the village, he jumped into a large pit. But he didn’t die—his vision was bad and in his depressed state, he didn’t give it much thought and jumped into a shallow section. Fortunately, there happened to be a passerby who rescued him.

’Large pit’ is a local term; it was actually more of a large pond, filled with water rather than just a hole in the ground.

Now, the old man was inside the house, wrapped in a quilt and crying loudly. He refused to listen to anyone who suggested he change his clothes, lamenting about how he, an old man who has lived too long, is holding back his grandson. Meanwhile, his grandson sat alongside him, sobbing quietly, his face a mixture of snot and tears.

Teacher Guan was discussing with Yan Fei about the plan to send the grandfather-grandson duo to the cattle farm. However, with one weeping softly and the other wailing loudly, they weren’t actually listening.

Yan Fei was annoyed and raised his voice at the old man, "If you keep crying and go completely blind, that’ll be perfect. Then your grandson will definitely be burdened by you. If you want to die, there will be plenty of opportunities later. For now, stop crying and listen to my teacher speak."

His words were more effective than anyone else’s. As soon as he mentioned the grandson, the old man stopped his racket.

With silence restored to the room, Teacher Guan softly and patiently repeated what needed to be said.

"Very good, this way the child’s education isn’t compromised, a little sacrifice isn’t a big deal. Sleeping less isn’t scary, as long as he isn’t left behind academically... " Teacher Guan had just finished speaking when the village party secretary, a pipe-smoker, started praising Yan. "Boss Yan, you’re doing a good deed! The child has a kind heart! Really good, really good..."

"Old Gong, have you finished crying yet? Hurry up and thank Boss Yan! As for the land your family’s renting out, anyone who wants it can have it. Both of you will move to the cattle farm together, and your grandson will be closer to school and to you. As long as he studies well, perhaps he might even become a college student! What are you still doing standing there? Can’t you even say ’thank you’?" Someone on the side was reminding Old Gong.

This guy was the village head, whom Yan Fei also recognized.

When you think about it, it’s obvious. If someone in the village tried to commit suicide by jumping into a pit, how could these two not come and check it out?

Gong Hanqing and his grandfather were a little dumbstruck, and it took them a while to register all the information. Only after being prompted a few times did they finally react. The old man suddenly didn’t care about his quilt anymore, and knelt down from his chair: "Benefactor! You are a good person..."

The feeling was quite novel—this was the first time someone had called him a good person.

Seeing that the old man’s clothes were still all wet and muddy, Yan Fei didn’t bother to help him up. Instead, he waved his hand again, "Go and change your clothes quickly! If you remain like this for too long, you’ll fall sick before you even start working for me, and then I’ll have to find someone to take care of you..."

The people around stared at him for a moment, then burst out laughing.

The old man didn’t need anyone to convince him anymore. His face flushed with embarrassment, he rose with the help of his grandson and headed back into the inner room to change his clothes.
