Chapter 304: Chapter 24 The Teacher’s Home Visit is Here_1

"Don’t rush, one at a time. You have enough for twenty now, you can go in. Do you, little fella, have enough? Don’t push, I need to count..."

At the entrance of the cattle farm, Heizi sat on a chair with a table placed in front of him. He was surrounded by a crowd of little brats, their little hands extended, each holding a small bottle.

Every time Heizi received a bottle, he would put on an act of checking it for a few moments. As for the jumbled mess inside, no one knew if he could actually count it. Nonetheless, he always claimed he did.

"Uncle, Uncle, count mine first, I have a few more! Don’t believe me, see for yourself!" One clever kid had prepared plenty of ’tickets’, daring to ask Heizi to count his first.

"Alright, you can go in! Here’s your bottle back, use it for your ’tickets’ next time!" Heizi happily emptied the bottle’s contents into a bucket at his feet, then returned the bottle to the child. "Anyone else has more than the others, I can count his first, and let him go in!"

So, kids who brought more ’tickets’ enthusiastically held up their bottles, shouting out their counts, as proud as if they’d aced an exam.

Further in, Old Cheng sat on a stool, tapping his crutch on the ground from time to time to remind the kids, "You can only look, do not touch the glass! If you break it, your parents will have to pay for it! The creatures inside are all poisonous, if they get out and bite someone it’ll be serious!"

Next to him were lined up a row of bamboo baskets, a few canned bottles, and a cage. Not far away was the small pond Yan Fei used to dig to raise fish!

In the bamboo baskets were snakes, with glass placed over the opening. Kids could look inside through the glass. The canned bottles contained centipedes and scorpions, the cage held wild chickens and rabbits and in the small pond, two large fish occasionally splashed around.

The children ooohed and aaahed as they watched. Some, faint-hearted at the sight of the snakes, managed to put on a brave face.

Old Cheng continued to instruct them: "You see clearly, this creature will kill you with its bite. Also, if you ever run into snakes or centipedes in the wild, keep your distance. Being bitten is serious! See this leg of mine? This large scar is from a bite, now I need to walk using a crutch!"

The scar he pointed to was indeed horrifying, yet anyone could easily tell that even a leopard couldn’t have inflicted such a scar, he was clearly just trying to scare the poor kids.

Still, doing so served to frighten these fearless children and make the ’tickets’ worth their while.

There was also a group of children gathered by the little pond, a curious little one was asking whether a fish that big could eat a person. Old Cheng went on to scare him by saying that while the fish wouldn’t dare to eat adults, if they saw a lone child, they would come and bite, even eat them.

Meanwhile, Yan Fei lay on a rattan chair inside the door, occasionally casting a glance towards the outside while checking out the "True Scripture" he’d retrieved from Provincial City. Each time he looked at the children who’d come for a "visit," he praised himself: what a genius I am, to even think of this method!

This idea came to him when he caught the rare Trimeresurus jerdonii. Back when he and Xu Xiaoyan visited the zoo to see the pythons, he’d had to pay the entrance fee three times; it was an annoying experience.

So he figured, my snake is also a rarity, why shouldn’t I charge ’admission’ and let others see it too!

As for the ’tickets’ he required, they were commonplace earthworms - but he only wanted red ones; he didn’t need the black and greenish type.

Anyway, those who were coming were kids, who often play in the mud. Catching a few earthworms for them is as simple as catching a chicken after spotting it.

As for why he needed earthworms, that comes from the ’True Scripture’ he was holding in his hand.

The title of the "True Scripture" started with the big words: Earthworm Breeding Technology.

This was the "high-tech knowledge" that he first saw in a magazine, asked around for a few days, waited until Wang Jiuming, then obtained from Wang Jiuming.

Wang Jiuming’s fertilizer factory did not need earthworms. He needed earthworm castings for making organic fertilizer. The earthworms, however, were collected by a feed factory to make biological feed. The factory director of that feed factory was a friend of Wang Jiuming, he’d asked him to write that paper on the technology and prospects of using cattle manure for earthworm breeding.

Earthworms are recognized by farmers as beneficial creatures, however, to what extent it is truly beneficial, remains unclear. They merely know that earthworms can loosen the soil and prevent soil compaction in the field.

These creatures can not only be bred with cow dung but also with pig manure. Nature, garbage, anything works, and the breeding process is simple. As Wang Jiuming stated, the current breeding technique is extensive, and how to perfect it requires more exploration and practice.

Both the data and the agricultural science magazines have hyped the creature. Yan Fei can convince himself to believe and give it a try, but he doesn’t think he can persuade others one by one. Hence, he must keep everything mysterious.

Another reason is that Wang Jiuming sternly warned him to breed and not to keep catching the wild ones. It’s okay to catch a small number as breeding stock for them to reproduce slowly, but it’s not okay to constantly catch them for money.

Otherwise, it would set a bad precedent. What if he really makes a small fortune from this in the future, and others follow suit to catch wild earthworms from the fields. Will the farmlands become endangered?

Although Yan Fei keeps this a secret, he knows it can’t stay hidden for long. As long as others don’t know for now, he will quietly go about it and talk about it later when he starts making money. Apart from him, no one knows where to sell them and even he doesn’t know the exact location of the feed factory yet!

Actually, he is now familiar with the data he holds. Now, he just wants to review it a few more times.

The greenhouse can’t be built in a day or two. The cost of building brick walls is high, so he plans to start with earth walls. Earth walls require making bricks, which will take a few days to dry in the sun, so there’s no need to rush.

Yan Fei is now considering that he definitely can’t transport his earthworm castings for sale in the provincial city. They’re not worth much, and the volume is large; the transportation costs outweigh the sales value. And if he were to bring it to Jurassic World, it would be even less cost-effective. Only a fool would risk exposing himself as a monster for a tiny little profit.

However, earthworm castings are valuable things. If they aren’t worth selling locally and he feels cheated to give them away, he thought of using them himself to grow something.

Previously, when he didn’t have land, he didn’t think so much, but with all the unused land he has now, it would be a waste to leave it fallow.

What to plant, he still hasn’t figured that out, but how to plant, he has an idea.

That is the cultivation of vegetables in the greenhouse.

Off-season vegetables these days are more rare than meat itself. As long as they’re grown, they’ll definitely make a killing. He knows this best.

As he was contemplating, Heizi sneaked over, smirking: "Brother Fei, I think you’re in big trouble! You’ve been skipping school every day and now your teacher is coming for a ’home visit’! I just saw your teacher coming..."
