Chapter 302: Chapter 22 Trimeresurus jerdonii_1

For Yan Fei, he would do the type of work during the day that was suitable for others to see, while at night he did the "unseen" work.

To be precise, it was work not suitable for others to see, otherwise it would not adhere to his principle of being low-key.

Working with his homemade large iron shovel, he sweat like a rainfall, and used his little shovel cart to level the land where he had pulled weeds in the afternoon.

This place across the river was just a town, but far from the bridge. Aside from the old man who watched over the bamboo grove, nobody else came. In the afternoon, the old man had even come to ask what he was doing, brushing the weeds here. Knowing that he was preparing to do something here, the old fellow probably felt happy, thinking he would have company at last.

It was even farther from the village to the west, so he wasn’t worried about anyone coming to bother him.

He had cleared more than two acres of land in the afternoon, for the most part, removing small trees and bushes, which was indeed not easy to clean up. It was simple to pull them out directly, but if he did not clear the roots, they would regrow next year. He might as well take some trouble to clean the place thoroughly.

He had also cleared a small path first to connect it with the one at the edge of the bamboo grove, making it convenient to transport things in the future.

After the small road was leveled, he rolled a large rock with an almost cylindrical shape on it a few times. Just like that, a road had been built.

The large rock was definitely a product of the dinosaur world islands. He would have to put it away after using it, otherwise, there were no such large rocks in the surroundings. If someone saw it, he wouldn’t be able to explain it!

He also caught two wild rabbits along the way.

When it came to the snakes, insects, rats, and ants that had been dug up while leveling the ground, there were even more. He dug up a whole nest of snakes, four or five of them all red and black striped Flower Red Long Worms, the longest had even surpassed one meter.

Flower Red Long Worms was a local term. These guys were famous under their academic terminology, Lycodon rufozonatus.

These creatures were all tossed aside by Yan Fei, let to find new homes.

Once he started working here, these snakes could help eliminate some rats, a free workforce, it would be wasted not to make use of them!

After finishing, he went into Vegetable Garden Island to take a breather and have a bite to eat, then he came out and continued working.

He also tidied up some of the other areas beforehand, mainly clearing out the small trees that could only be used as firewood. Doing it during the day would have been a bit too shocking, and digging them out one by one was too slow for him, so he decided that doing it at night was best.

Just as dawn was approaching, he had just pulled out a small tree, when a snake darted out from underneath. He was just about to bend down to pick it up and toss it aside, when he stopped. He picked up a tree stick and held the snake down.

At first, he thought it was the commonly seen Clear-water Leopard Snake, and was almost getting ready to grab it, when he saw its slightly large head and realized it was something else, so he decided to use a tree stick to hold it down.

Although he thought that even if he got bitten by the creature, most likely nothing would happen— at most, he would go through some changes—but who would be willing to let it bite?

A body covered with alternating black and yellow snake scales, and a large triangular head.

This was Trimeresurus jerdonii.

The only poisonous snake found around Sancha River, so rare that almost no one had seen it, existing only in rumors. It was said that its bite was fatal without treatment.

What a rare creature!

Unfortunately, unlike the non-poisonous Lycodon rufozonatus, it certainly couldn’t be allowed to linger around, so it had to be humanely eradicated.

Just as he was about to exert force, an idea suddenly popped into his mind. He gave a crafty laugh, then holding the tail of this notorious Trimeresurus jerdonii, he went into Vegetable Garden Island.

On the island, he found a broken bamboo basket and threw the notorious Iron Head into it.

Then, he came out as it was just getting light, and began to look around.

A few centipedes, a few scorpions, two of the Lycodon rufozonatus that he had let go earlier were dragged back again, and he also went to the grass near the river to find two snakes, which the locals called Clear-water Leopard Snake.

Thanks to this place being next to a bamboo grove, otherwise, he certainly wouldn’t have reaped such a ’haul’.

He collected them all in jars and jars.

Back home at the cattle yard, he went straight to the kitchen in the inner courtyard. He felt relieved as soon as he saw it.

Lin Yumei was confused, "What are you up to, Xiao Fei?"

Yan Fei replied, "Let’s not kill this wild chicken today. Let it be tied up and fed for a few days. I’ll find some use for it. Also, these two rabbits, keep them too. Hey, is there any canned jar dumped in the yard? Heizi, find a few for me."

Fruit canned jars were pretty popular at the time. Every household would have a few. The jar was short and had a wide diameter - it was kept after eating the canned food, for when it might be needed. Most of the containers holding salt in the kitchen were these jars.

Kids also liked these jars. They used them to ’move fish’.

They would tie a rope around the opening of the jar, hang a rope on both sides to keep the jar upright, and pick it up with a little stick. Then, at the edge of a pond where lotus roots were grown, they tossed some broken bun crumbs into the jar, filled it with water, and sank it. There was some technique involved - the bun crumbs had to be thoroughly soaked, otherwise, they would float up.

After a while, they would lift up the jar, now full of small fish.

This act was called ’moving fish’. The fish were all just tiny fry – too small to even get stuck between the teeth, it was all just for fun. Most of them would end up back in the pond. Of course, if adults knew that kids were playing by the pond, eight out of ten parents would slap them, and the remaining two would use brooms or bamboo sticks.

Once Heizi found the canned jars, Yan Fei threw all those centipedes and scorpions in them, then handed them to Heizi: "Feed them for a few days, just throw in some grasshoppers. We will have a big use soon."

After eating, he took a ruler out to measure the land.

Then he estimated how many columns were needed to build the greenhouse, so his trip to Vegetable Garden Island was settled.

For the next few days, every spare moment was spent on the island, chopping trees. He picked out trees that were bowl-thick and arm-thick, similar to common pines and cypresses. An excellent paper-knife was amazing for chopping wood, especially with his extraordinary strength, a bowl-thick tree trunk could be cut in half with one slash.

Then he casually pruned the unnecessary branches, and put them aside for use. One night when Old Lin wasn’t at the bamboo forest, he took all the wood out openly.

On the vacant field, he had already inserted rows of small tree sticks at good distances as placeholders. He replaced these small sticks with the wood, and the pillar construction for the whole greenhouse was completed.

That’s why he preferred to do it himself. If he let others do it, it would take several people at least. They would have to dig holes, bury the pillars, and make sure the height of each row was the same, so they would need precise measurements for digging holes.

However, if he did it himself, it was simple. He just clutched the wood and plunged it into the soil. After all, the soil was soft.

Then, give it a big hammer, the height is similar, a small difference doesn’t matter, but if there’s a big difference, give it another hammer, if not, pull it out and insert again.

A large greenhouse structure that others needed several people and several days to build, he finished in one night.

Looking at the structure, he felt joy and called Uncle Ming over to take a look.

Ma Yongming was also happy. Yan Fei lied to Ma Yongming saying that the wood was sent by the factory, and it only arrived last night. He had built the frame according to the design, and now all it needed was asbestos tiles, and it would be a greenhouse.

"I don’t like too much sunlight. Uncle Ming, you see, find a few people to help me build a wall on the south side. A dirt wall is fine, it’s solid. It can keep warm in winter. Both ends should also be closed, but leave some vents. There’s no rush for the north side. Since it’s lower, we can close it off when it gets colder." As he spoke, Yan Fei was pointing out his ’design’ to Ma Yongming.

"Build another two small earth houses. If anyone needs to come here, they won’t have to run around and can cook food, boil water to drink. They can live here at night to keep watch." As Yan Fei spoke, he pointed to a patch of flat ground nearby.

Ma Yongming didn’t speak for a while. He stared at the frame, wondering why the south side was higher and the north side lower. He asked, "Shouldn’t it be lower in the south and higher in the north to block the sun?"

Yan Fei was stunned, "It’s near the river! In winter, the north wind blows, and if the north side is lower, it will prevent the north wind from lifting up the shed! Besides, you’re going to build a wall on the south side. I have other uses for this plot next to it. It’s fine, it’s part of the design."

Ma Yongming looked puzzled, "Is that how it’s designed in your blueprint?"

Yan Fei hardened his scalp and replied: "Yes!"

He certainly would not admit that he misunderstood the blueprint.

"Okay then!" Ma Yongming nodded in confusion. He felt something was not right but thought that a blueprint designed by the provincial capital must be superior than him, a country bumpkin, so he didn’t think too much about it.
