Chapter 294: Chapter 15 Big Fish Bone_1

The bell rang for the end of class, and Miss Xu Xiaoyan tidied up her textbooks as she watched her teacher leave. She left the classroom and headed towards the dormitory.

What started as a solitary trek soon amassed a crowd. By the time they arrived at the dormitory gate, almost everyone from her own dormitory had joined her, along with a few from neighboring dormitories.

That’s how it went in college. After classes began, everyone moved in groups. But as time went on, some would still stick to their groups while others found their own pairs.

Amidst the chattering and laughter with the girls, Miss Xu Xiaoyan suddenly looked towards a flower bed in front of the dormitory.

From behind it flashed a familiar figure, ready to call out to her!

Their eyes met and the other person opened his mouth but remained silent, simply smiling and waving at her with a familiar thermos in his hand.

The scene felt as though she had been transported back to the year before.

Back then, Yan Xiaofei had also popped up from behind the shrubs and seemed to take delight in surprising her.

However, back then, he was cheeky rather than upfront; he was shorter than her but now, they were about the same height; and he used to be clueless, yet he still is!

Still, that feeling of being taken by surprise was delightful!

The girl said something to her dorm mates and ran towards Yan Fei. Her sudden departure caused her friends to burst into laughter, especially when they saw the spectacled figure behind the tree.

Upon hearing the laughter, Xu Xiaoyan’s face flushed a deep red. But that didn’t stop her.

Once beside Yan Fei, her laughter turned into a glare. "Yan Xiaofei, I told you not to run back and forth. You should have come during the break when there’s more time. Today is only Friday! Did you skip class? Tell me, how did you get here? Did you take a bus?"

With a thermos ready in his hand, Yan Fei surely had a reason. He had prepared a few excuses to counter her questions.

For instance, he could say now was non-term time and the bus fare was cheap; or he hitched a ride on a truck without having to pay; even that he sneaked onto a truck and the driver unknowingly brought him into the Provincial City.

However, seeing her face trying to look angry yet behind those eyes laid thrilled astonishment, he decided not to make those excuses. He simply whispered, "I missed you."

He spoke softly to avoid being overheard, but the girl definitely heard.

Her face turned red instantly. She looked down and said somewhat awkwardly, "What are you talking about? There’s so many people..."

A satisfied smile crept onto Yan Fei’s face, "Hurry and get your lunch box. Let’s go eat! The fish I got for you should still be hot."

She seemed to snap back to reality. "I’ll go get my lunch box, I won’t get yours. I’ll make you use the dining hall plates. What’s with the flattery you picked up in just a few days!"

Even though she announced she would go and fetch her lunch box, she didn’t move immediately but first checked the surroundings.

Where Yan Fei had picked was brilliant, it was hidden from sight by some trees. Unless someone went out of their way to take a look, it was unlikely anyone would notice them.

Seeing that she was unwatched, she blushed, bit her lip, and mustering all the courage she had, she quickly leaned forward and pecked Yan Fei’s cheek, whispering, "I missed you too."

She then turned and darted to her room.

As the girl had said, they hadn’t seen each other for only a few days. But their reunion was so affectionate that anyone watching might think they hadn’t met in years.

Touching his cheek, the joy on Yan Fei’s face flashed away. He walked a few steps, muttered, "Silly..." and shook his head.

Actually, when she kissed him, Yan Fei, with his quick reflexes, could have dodged. But seeing her muster up the courage, he decided not to.

Of course, there was a reason behind it.

As expected, not long after she went up, uproarious laughter followed by shouts from a dorm room was clearly heard by Yan Fei below, "So what if we saw! We’ve never seen it before! If you’re jealous, go find your own to kiss..."

The laughter from the dormitory echoed even louder.

That silly girl was so concerned about people from the front, left, and right seeing her, but she forgot that they were standing below the dormitory. If someone from above wanted to peep, they could see everything.

By the time they got to the dining hall, it was quite late. They served themselves some rice and found a suitable seat offered by one of Xu Xiaoyan’s classmates.

However, they were all university students now, and they had only known each other for less than a week, so no one came over to dine with them like they did in high school.

What Yan Fei meant by "fish" this time was actually a commonly seen Mylopharyngodon piceus. As he said, it was served hot.

There wasn’t much, just a small piece from the thickest part of the fish’s body.

Because the thermos was too small, it couldn’t fit a second piece.

For Yan Fei, who despised gnawing fish bones, he would absolutely not choose to prepare a small fish. This fish was one of those he had once caught in the reservoir, measuring over a meter long. The thermos was a bit small, so all it could contain was just a small piece of it.

"Wow, this fish bone is so big!" The girl was enjoying her meal whilst critiquing a fish bone she had picked out.

Perhaps it was the lyrics "I miss you, do you miss me?" that made her totally forget to ask Yan Fei how he had brought it, and she didn’t even bother to ask how the thermos kept it warm over hundreds of miles.

Yan Fei was just delighted about it because it meant that he didn’t need to use the excuses he had prepared.

"If you like it, I can bring you such a huge fish next time. Whenever you want some, I’ll have some." Seeing the girl’s joy, Yan Fei immediately pledged. "Oh, and have your dried meats finished? If not, eat them quickly. The weather is hot, and they could spoil."

"It’s only been a few days! I haven’t even eaten much! Don’t worry! They’re stored pretty well and won’t spoil." While she was talking, she put down the fish bone in her chopsticks, then picked out another one from the fish flesh. "Look at this one, it’s even longer than the last one."

Seeing her only focused on playing with the fish bones, Yan Fei urged her, "What’s so interesting about fish bones? You’ve eaten big fish before. Eat quickly! It’s going to get cold soon!"

The girl was displeased, shaking the fish bone in front of his face. "I just want to see it. Look at it! Look! What a big fish bone!"

Yan Fei couldn’t help crying or laughing at the girl’s childish antics, "Okay, okay, I’ve seen it. Let’s settle down! We are being watched by so many people!"

The girl immediately bowed her head guiltily, her eyes rolling around, and muttered, "Who’s watching, who’s watching?"

Although she said that, she obediently put the fish bone aside and happily continued to eat her meat.

Not far away, a group of students clutching food trays were looking for a table. One of the students began speaking, "Alright! Lezi, stop sulking. You’re only a junior, yet your summer internship review is even better than those who’ve graduated. What more could you want? They only asked you to treat them to a few fish! You’re being such a penny-pincher..."

"Exactly," another student laughed, "I didn’t purposely select the biggest fish. It’s just that the biggest fish and I happened to share a bond, and it let me..."

He stopped mid-sentence as his eyes were fixated in a certain direction.

Following his gaze, the other students all looked over as well.

When they finally found a table and sat down, they all stared at their own plates of fish and let out a unanimous sigh.

A student questioned, a hint of doubt in his eyes, "Is that ham over there? Or a fish? Does the cafeteria sell such big fish?"

Another student nodded, glancing at his own plate of fish, "I wish we were mistaken, but the fact is, that’s definitely a fish. And it’s certainly not sold in the cafeteria, didn’t you see the thermos box next to them?"

One let out a melancholy sigh, "I’ve said it before, it’s always better to eat chicken legs. Why eat fish!"

Another student then began to murmur, "I thought my happy university life of having fish to eat was about to start! I never thought about Einstein’s theory of relativity being omnipresent, even for happiness. If my fish is not even as long as someone else’s leftover fish bones, then my happiness also gets discounted..."

The student next to him chimed in with a sly smile, "If the person eating the fish is a pretty girl, not only is the happiness discounted, it’s halved after the discount..."

As he succeeded in diverting everyone’s attention with his words, he covertly reached over to his fellow complaining student’s plate and stole a large piece of fish with his chopsticks.

Then, he quickly shoved it into his mouth, mumbling, "Now my happiness is finally not discounted..."

The words had hardly left his mouth when a sudden outcry erupted. One student was waving his chopsticks to protect his own fish, exclaiming, "Damn, you guys are really ruthless! Even stealing my tiny fish..."

The surrounding students laughingly rebuked him, "A cunning person like you deserves it. If we didn’t rob you, we’d be insulting our university’s training..."

Another cry rose up, "Ah, how did my fish get smaller, who stole mine... Give it back, I saw you..."

Immediately, the table was filled with laughter and horseplay, with chopsticks flying about and food fights breaking out.

This is university, a place overflowing with youthful spirit!
