Chapter 281: Chapter 2 Moving Cars, Stirring Hearts_1
The moment Miss Xu Xiaoyan uttered "laugh if you want to laugh," it was as if a starting gun had gone off, and her two sisters instantly erupted in laughter.
Being older girls, they managed to hold back after a few chuckles. Even Old Xu, who usually kept a straight face, let out a few laughs. Only Xu Xiaoyan’s mother, suppressing her laughter, reminded them, "You’re all dressed up like decent young ladies. Now, get your suitcases and hit the road. Remember to keep your wits about you."
Even the man driving the tractor, who they knew, was doubled over in laughter. He was going to offer help, but there were already so many people to carry the few pieces of luggage. So he didn’t bother.
Once on the road, the riders on the tractor didn’t have much to talk about.
Yan Fei noticed Xu Xiaoyan’s second sister kept stealing glances at him, followed by giggles.
Baffled, Yan Fei asked, "Is something funny?"
No response would have been better. But his asking made Xu Yue giggle even louder.
Her laughter was so infectious that it was only when Xu Xiaoyan pinched her that she stopped. Quite puzzled, Xu Xiaoyan said, "That’s true! I mean, this outfit isn’t really much, people from all over the Provincial City wear this sort of thing. It’s not unusual for you to be wearing it, but why do I find it so funny when it’s on you?"
Their eldest sister, sitting nearby, uttered one word: "Contrast."
Instantly, Xu Yue started laughing even harder said, "Yes, it’s the contrast! Usually, your image is...is..."
Old Xu interjected, "What bloody image does he have..."
Xu Xiaoyan’s mother elbowed him in friendly reprimand, which sent Xu Yue into a fit of laughter.
Xu Xiaoyan forcefully leaned towards her and started tickling her, all while saying, "Keep laughing, I’ll keep tickling. Don’t laugh yourself to death..."
It quickly devolved into chaos until Xu Xiaoyan’s mother had to intervene, saying, "Enough! You’re all grown women, not children. Can’t you act a bit more ladylike?"
Before they knew it, they had arrived at Provincial City; the cattle farm isn’t far away.
The driver parked the tractor at the side of the road, and everyone got off to wait for the bus.
As dawn was just breaking, people started arriving from other places. Xu Xiaoyan quickly instructed Yan Fei, "Make sure to secure our seating as soon as possible when the bus arrives. Put our luggage away quickly before boarding. There are so many people here. If we board late, we might not get seats."
Yan Fei nodded in agreement.
Old Xu added, "Go board the bus as soon you are done loading our luggage. I’ll tell you where to place it. Delaying may mean not getting a seat."
Just as he finished speaking, the bus arrived. Before it even came to a full stop, a head popped out from one of the rear windows and yelled to Xu Xiaoyan, "Xiao Xingxing, hurry up! We’ve saved you some seats."
Without Ji Yunyun yelling, people were already flocking in her direction, and her call only added to the urgency.
The bus on the first day of school was crowded.
Yan Fei had no choice but to elbow his way through the crowd for his wife-to-be, relying on his strength to squeeze past others.
Luckily, everyone was jostling for space, so anyone who was pushed aside could only blame their own lack of strength.
After the sisters boarded the bus, Yan Fei began to load the luggage. All the while, Old Xu grumbled, "I told you to get on board, why didn’t you listen?".
Meanwhile, shouts were heard from the bus, indicating it was at capacity, yet many more waited on the ground. The luggage compartments were filled with parents sending their kids off to school, with the students themselves jockeying for seats inside.
Once the luggage was stowed away, Yan Fei boarded the already overloaded bus. Luckily, Xu Xiaoyan had saved him a seat at the back.
Every possible standing spot was occupied. Some people were even having trouble standing upright, forced to stoop by hanging on the overhead luggage racks.
Yan Fei made his way from the front to the back of the bus at a snail’s pace, only managing to reach his seat after the bus had started moving.
Inside the crowded bus, everyone was chatting away, shouting out of the windows to their relatives below. Some parents even ran alongside the moving bus, repeatedly instructing where the luggage was placed and reminding them to eat well once they reached school.
Suddenly, the entire bus gasped. Those who couldn’t see outside asked what had happened. Those by the windows responded that a man pursuing the bus had tripped and fallen.
By the time onlookers managed to squeeze to the window, they saw the old man swiftly getting up and chasing after the bus for two more steps before losing balance. He stood there in the dim dawn light, shouting to the distance, "I’m fine, I’m fine! You just take good care of yourself at school, don’t worry about home. We’re all doing great ..."
Under the dim sky, the figure standing alone by the road was shouting at some student. As the bus moved further, his voice gradually faded.
In the noise of the bus’s engine, probably no one except Yan Fei could hear what the old man was shouting.
But those who saw the old man shouting could probably guess what he was saying. A mother worried when her child traveled a thousand miles, and so did the father. There are only a few standard lines of advice.
An eerie silence fell over the bus for a moment.
Some of the students’ parents were on the bus, intending to accompany their children to school. With other passengers deliberately avoiding the school start day, the majority of passengers were students.
This quiet period didn’t last long, though. Before too long, the young people in the vehicle stirred to life again.
Quite a few of them had already spent a year or even longer at school and started giving advice to the freshmen.
Yan Fei was sitting in the spot reserved by Xu Xiaoyan’s eldest sister, towards the front of the bus. Ji Yunyun had secured two seats at the back for Xu Xiaoyan and her second sister to sit in.
From his seat, Yan Fei could hear Ji Yunyun asking where Hero Yan was.
Yan Fei was torn between feeling pleased and feeling dejected. He comforted himself with the thought that at least his ’disguise’ was successful – successful enough to make him unrecognizable to others.
After Xu Xiaoyan was badgered to her wits’ end and called out to him, Yan Fei reluctantly stood up, waved to the girls at the back, showing that he was there.
Except for Ji Yunyun, another familiar face was Zhou Peipei. As for the others sitting with Ji Yunyun, Yan Fei didn’t recognize.
After waving and sitting back down, as expected, the sounds of two girls in the row behind, suppressing their laughter but unable to contain it, reached him.
In a short while, a few of the surrounding people started laughing as well, though they had no clue why the mere sight of the bespectacled young man waving to them could create this much laughter. Idiots!
Xu Xiaoyan fumed from the side, "Laugh, laugh, laugh, may you two crazy chicks laugh yourselves to death!"
Meanwhile, as the girls in the back carried on with their antics, Xu Xiaoyan’s eldest sister was sharing her experiences with Yan Fei: "The Faculty of Law of Provincial University is in the north campus, which is a bit remote, but it’s next to the Provincial Agricultural University. Aren’t you raising cattle? Take this opportunity to visit the Agricultural University. You can enter the university library without a student ID, as long as you don’t borrow books. There are a lot of useful books there, some of which you may not easily find elsewhere. When you go, bring a pen and a notebook..."
