Chapter 279: Chapter 139 Preparing to Depart_1

Xu Xiaoyan snorted coldly, mimicking Teacher Chang’s tone, "If it were someone else bringing this, I wouldn’t accept it. But since it’s you, I’ll take it."

Seeing the situation go south, Heizi immediately tried to appease her, "Can you please stop talking, Sister-in-law?"

Fang Xiaoqing instantly stirred up trouble, "Keep on talking, Sister Star, keep on talking!"

Everyone else seemed intrigued, expecting Xu Xiaoyan to continue.

"Hmph, calling me Sister-in-law?" Xu Xiaoyan sneered, and continued, still mimicking Teacher Chang’s voice.

"I’m not worried about other students, but I worry for troublemakers like you. Once you leave the school gate, I fear the day I hear about someone who made a mistake and ended up at the police station. Now that you still remember to visit me, I’m relieved. I’ll accept this..."

Everyone paused for a moment, then cheered at Heizi together, "What a face-saver, accepting your gift..."

Xu Xiaoyan laughed, "I heard from other students that whenever the unmanageable students visited her, she would say this. It seems that it was true!"

Heizi was so angry that he slammed his chopsticks down on the table, "Since you already said it, then I’ll be honest. I didn’t take all the credit for these eggs. I told Teacher Chang that these eggs are from Boss Yan’s chicken farm. I was just doing the legwork!"

Yan Fei didn’t bother to figure out what was coming next, he snorted, "No more talking!"

Only Xu Xiaoyan was bold enough to provoke him now, "Speak! Speak! Speak!"

Heizi pretended to be timid as he glanced at Yan Fei, and said flatteringly to Xu Xiaoyan, "Sister-in-law, if I speak up, can you stop him from hitting me?"

Xu Xiaoyan didn’t care about Heizi calling her sister-in-law at this moment, she glared at him, "Don’t worry, I’m here. You don’t need to be afraid of him. Speak!"

Heizi coughed, and also imitated Teacher Chang’s voice, "It’s that kid! If he is the one delivering it, I have to accept it even more, as he is the first student I taught who scored three points. I’m always keen on hearing about his wellbeing!"

Upon noticing Yan Fei’s hostile stare, Heizi pleaded, "Brother Fei, there are nice things too! Teacher Chang said you’re doing well nowadays, heard I’ve found a mute to help, and praised you! It’s true, I am not lying... Sister-in-law, you see the way Brother Fei looks at me, I’m a little scared!"

Xu Xiaoyan rebuked Yan Fei, "Hurry up and eat, and stop staring! Don’t bully Heizi!"

Fang Xiaoqing openly ’secretly’ tugged at her and whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear, "Leave him be. If he gets a beating, that serves him right!"

Heizi was irate, "Hey, girl, I haven’t done anything to upset you, have I?"

Fang Xiaoqing rolled her eyes and ignored him, "Does ’someone’ know if they upset me?"

Heizi pondered before whining, "I never got to eat the birds, is it necessary for you to hold such a grudge?"

"Very necessary! Who asked you to lie to me in the first place?" huffed Fang Xiaoqing.

Turns out this little girl still holds a grudge against Heizi for the time he duped her into helping him feed the White Egrets with leftover food!

When everyone else discovered that he deceived the young girl, they collectively sneered at Heizi, "Serves you right!"

After lighthearted meal and short rest, it was time to get back to work.

Gao Bin really was good at work. Once he started, everyone at the cattle farm was satisfied.

No one had to guide him; he learned after watching others once, and seemed very familiar with feeding the cattle.

Upon inquiring, it turned out he had previously helped feed horses.

He worked rigorously, almost doing the work of more than two Heizi.

It’s not that Heizi now is lazy, but everyone is different, and this work just didn’t suit him. Something others could finish in a couple of strides took him several. Although he seemed to be working harder than others, he was neither as fast nor efficient.

But Heizi seemed to enjoy the work nonetheless. Yan Fei was originally thinking of hiring one more person, but now with Gao Bin’s help—given he continues being diligent—there was no need to find anyone else.

There also was an issue with Gao Bin. After working for a while, he had an animated conversation with his sister, who then approached Yan Fei.

"My brother said he would move here if you let him work here. He’s a bit worried about leaving his horseshoe shop unattended. He said some people in the countryside still keep horses, and if he isn’t in the shop, there would be no one to shoe horses in town."

"Let him pack up his horseshoe stuff and move to the cattle farm. Once he’s done moving, he can put up a sign on the door. Then, anyone looking for him would know to come to the cattle farm," Yan Fei simply resolved the issue. Ma Chao had moved his liquor distillery here, and people switched to buying it from here.

"Is that okay?" Gao Bin’s sister asked somewhat embarrassedly.

"What’s the issue? We have plenty of space! Nowadays, there aren’t many people shoeing horses. There’s enough space for him to do it."

And so, the matter was settled.

A few days later, Yanfei’s father from the county town sent word for Yan Fei to collect the money from selling paper, just as Fifth Brother had asked Yan Fei to collect the money from selling the motorcycle.

Now, a single trip would gather everything.

The money was more than Yan Fei had anticipated. The paper was sold at factory price, slightly pricier than he sold it in town; the motorcycle went for over seven thousand yuan, even though it was seized unregistered and they had discarded the license plate. Otherwise, it could have fetched more.

After setting aside Xu Xiaoyan’s tuition and living expenses, he managed to buy four more cows.

Regarding the cattle farm’s daily expenses, the money from selling liquor mostly covered it. Besides, Yan Fei wasn’t worried. He had a pile of scrap metal sitting on Vegetable Garden Island that he could convert into cash at any time.

As the new school term approached, Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan spent a lot of time together, scarcely minding anything else.

Something minor also occurred in-between. Gao Bin, who had been working in the farm for a few days, received Heizi’s endorsement, who then secretly suggested to Yan Fei to raise Gao Bin’s pay as 150 was too little.

Yan Fei agreed with a wave of his hand, deciding to pay Gao Bin as much as Heizi. He also advised that if there were any leftover eggs that couldn’t be eaten or given away, Gao Bin should take some home to prevent him from worrying.

Yan Fei had just recently taken a chicken and some eggs to the county town, and was going to need a few more days before he could deliver more. Now that there was a basket of eggs every few days, he didn’t feel like selling them for the small profit it would bring and decided to continue giving them away instead!

Heizi, feeling delighted, volunteered, "I can deliver them from now on, let him focus on his work. I can do the legwork."

Yan Fei was puzzled, "How come you’re so eager now!"

Heizi replied with righteous indignation, "I’m trying to ease your burdens, don’t you see?"

Although Yan Fei suspected Heizi had ulterior motives, he couldn’t be bothered to think more, and just let him do it.

As the school opening approached, Yan Fei paid his own tuition to Jiao Bing and Yang Qian in advance, asking them to help him register at the school. Yan Fei swiftly left himself, getting ready to take his wife to college.

Previously, they had put in a lot of effort to clear a 600-li-long path, even at the expense of causing an uproar. This path was created with today precisely in mind!
