Chapter 269: Chapter 129: Encounter with Five Consecutive Explosions - Part 1
This vendor impersonating an Native American is selling fried crabs.
Currently, on the market, his approach is truly original.
Watching him skewer those tiny crabs on bamboo sticks, tossing them in a small pot of boiling oil, he then drains them on a bamboo rack placed over the pot.
He advertising his fried crabs, garbed in oil, to eager children, while simultaneously shouting, "Fried Crab, crisp and fragrant when eaten! Come and get it kids, it guarantees you’ll grow taller..."
Despite his tall tales of these grand generals, the crabs are actually quite small. Their shells are still soft, but after frying, they become crispy, making it easy for the children to chew directly
For five of these tiny crabs, he charges a yuan, much to the dismay of the parents.
But who can resist this guy’s unique get-up! The fried golden brown crabs, flailing about hypnotically, is enough to make children halt in their tracks. Just for the sake of their children’s happiness, they’ll fork over the money!
Not only Yan Fei is captivated, Xu Xiaoyan is as well. Looking at the absurdity of the man’s costume, she can’t help but laugh. Taking notice of what he’s selling, she can’t keep from uttering, "Charging a yuan for these few tiny crabs, isn’t that cheating kids?"
Realizing what she just said is inappropriate, she sees Yan Fei laughing and quickly turns away, "I wasn’t speaking to anyone, just talking to myself!"
They stand there for a moment, causing the crab vendor masquerading as a Native American to notice them. He freezes for a moment and his shouting ceases. As he watches the crowd of joyful children in front of his stall, he spontaneously springs up and snatches a few skewers of fried crabs—rushing over to them.
"Here, have a taste! It’s on the house! A gift for both of you!"’ Running up to them, the ’Native American’ seemingly unsure of what to say, proffers the fried crabs in anticipation.
Seeing them looking at him, he adds with a smile, "They’re all thoroughly washed, very clean!"
Yan Fei pauses, contemplating the earnest smile on the face painted over with oil. After a moment, he reaches out to accept the skewered crabs, replying with a smile, "Your business seems to be doing well, keep it up!"
"Sure thing!" When the vendor sees him accept the crabs, he instantly beams with joy. "I’ve got to get back to work now, enjoy yourselves!"
Once he is back at his stall, you can still see his grinning face from afar. Then his husky voice resumes: "Children, don’t worry, the Fried Crab is almost ready and there is one for everyone. Hey, this kid, don’t be so impatient, it’s a bit hot, wait before eating it..."
"Do we know him?" Xu Xiaoyan wonders, accepting a skewer of crab from Yan Fei.
The girl apparently has forgotten what she solemnly declared about not speaking earlier.
"You must have forgotten. Remember when we were selecting our jobs? On the way home, we were followed by a group of hooligans. I had to throw them into the water. The fellow was one of them. Looks like he’s turned over a new leaf now." Yan Fei explains.
The man’s distinctive voice resonates with Yan Fei’s memories. The vendor masquerading as a ’Native American’ was the very same person he encountered playing cards in the courtyard, winning a ’five-of-a-kind’ on the night Zhang Laosan was drowned in a cesspit.
Of course, he was also the same guy that Yan Fei warned Xu Xiaoyan about - the one he threw into the water.
"Oh, it seems he’s not doing so badly now! Compared to being a hooligan, scamming people by selling crabs is a somewhat more legitimate profession!" the girl remarks convincingly.
"Is that really scamming? He’s just trying to make children happy. Can’t you see how willingly the parents are paying?" Yan Fei responds, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
This girl just finds eating crabs too easy. After all, Yan Fei can get half a bucket with one dip in the river. She fails to realize how precious it is for city children to have access to hand-caught crabs.
The girl glances at him, "Humph, all I know is those little crabs are not worth a yuan!"
Both of them feel a bit sentimental, seeing how a young hooligan has transformed into a street vendor. They’re touched by his story, but don’t know how to express it, so they use banter to mask their feelings of compassion.
Regardless, he is running a legitimate business now.
He clearly devoted a lot of thought to this unique business. It’s very successful. Especially how he skewers five crabs and calls it a ’five-of-a-kind’. It reminds Yan Fei of how he threatened him and told him that if he’s not careful, he may not get the chance to play cards and win a ’five-of-a-kind’ again!
Perhaps he was satirizing himself! Of course, not everyone would understand the story behind it.
Maybe he’s using the ’five-of-a-kind’ as a form of motivation to conduct his business earnestly. After all, it really takes extraordinary courage and determination to dress up in such a ridiculous manner and conduct business in public.
"Humph, Yan Fei, just because I’m talking doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Sooner or later, I will settle the score with you!" They were quite a distance away when the girl recalls her recent vow of silence.
"Uh huh, how will you settle it?" Yan Fei nods.
"Humph! Just wait, I will find a way to make you confess!" The girl glances at him, and flips her ponytail again.
The two of them wander around unsure of what to buy. Not long ago, they made a purchase from the city market. Now, compared to what they saw in the city, the clothes here seem less appealing. Even after looking around, they end up not buying anything. Instead, they eat a lot of snacks.
"Xiao Xingxing, well, well! You guys are here wandering around and you didn’t even come find me. Were you afraid I’d interfere with your two-person world?" They were about to leave when they heard the voice of Student Ji Yunyun.
Turning around, they see Ji Yunyun with a smirk on her face, making them both feel a little uneasy.
Strolling hand in hand, they both had thought about Xu Xiaoyan’s friend whose family runs a shop in the market. Last time, Ji Yunyun helped them buy clothes. They both consider her a good friend.
However, they both deliberately avoid mentioning her. When they were close to Ji Yunyun’s shop entrance, they deliberately detoured away. Now, being seen by her, it’s unavoidably a bit awkward.
Seeing this, Xu Xiaoyan chuckles nervously and instinctively lets go of Yan Fei’s hand. "Oh no! We only just got here and have been wandering aimlessly. We have to get to his home for dinner soon. We came here today because we had something to do."
"What thing? What thing? Are you planning that... you know what?" Ji Yunyun’s face is full of speculation.
"What are you talking about? We don’t know! We really have something to do, but we can’t tell you! You just guess!" Xu Xiaoyans’s annoyance at Yunyun’s impatience makes her laugh, relaxing the atmosphere.
"Humph, you won’t tell me, but I already know. You two are planning on having that feast, and you didn’t even invite me. Don’t think I don’t know, I’m very well informed. Just now I saw you two holding hands! Hurry up and give me some wedding candy, quick, quick." Ji Yunyun grabs Xu Xiaoyan, not letting go.
