Chapter 263: Chapter 123: Malicious Intentions ’Maturity’_1
When Yan Fei returned home after the meal, he actually took all the birds back with him.
However, he didn’t bring them all, as things happened rather unexpectedly.
After Yan Fei, Heizi, and Pang Fa had dinner together and were about to leave, Heizi shouted to the room, "I have released all these birds for you! Now I’ll take this cage and water cart back to the owner..."
As he spoke, he rushed to beckon Yan Fei and Pang Fa to help, and he effortlessly tossed a bird cage onto the water cart. Then he picked up another cage, opened it and let the bird inside fly away.
He chucked another two bird-filled cages onto the cart, snatched another cage from Pang Fa, and released two more birds.
Then he urged them softly, "Let’s hurry up and leave after loading..."
Pang Fa and Yan Fei realized at this moment that the wily Heizi had loaded the eye-catching birds like the white egret and the mandarin duck onto the cart, while releasing the less attractive ones such as the green-headed duck and the spot-billed duck.
At his signal, Yan Fei promptly pulled the cart out of the door. Pang Fa and Heizi stood behind the cart, fearing they might be seen by people inside the house.
Actually, it wouldn’t matter if they were seen, as the water in the cart had been emptied and was protected by a screen. From inside the house, there wasn’t much to see and with Heizi causing quite a commotion, it was clear birds were flying off, making it hard to know how many had actually been let loose.
Once the trio was far enough away from the house, they all started to laugh. This Heizi was full of tricks indeed. He predicted that the people indoors wouldn’t bother with their affairs and therefore wouldn’t come out to examine their deductions.
Nonetheless, Heizi’s tactics proved effective, and all the birds ended up back at the cattle farm.
Miss Xu Xiaoyan went home to wait for news, probably not returning until evening.
Unsure of when Xu Xiaoyan would return, Yan Fei couldn’t be bothered to meddle any further. He prepared his ink brush and paper, and drove out Fang Xiaoqing, who had been expressing disapproval since the birds’ return. Alone in the room, Yan Fei practiced his calligraphy, pondering whether his lettering would appear better on the thieves if written more neatly.
While he was in the process of writing, Heizi showed up carrying a pile of vegetables, followed closely by Fang Xiaoqing, who had just left.
Curious, Yan Fei asked, "What are you doing? If I want vegetables, I’ll pick them myself..."
"Not for you." With that comment, Heizi managed to make Yan Fei feel even more puzzled. "I thought these birds looked pitiful. I’m just feeding them something."
Fang Xiaoqing couldn’t help but chuckle as she reached into her bag and took out a handful of wheat grains. As she fed the caged birds, she sarcastically remarked, "Unlike some people, Brother Heizi doesn’t just think about eating. I can’t imagine how heartless a person must be to cage these beautiful birds... Oh, my..."
She was interrupted when a bird nearly pecked her hand and she couldn’t finish her sentence.
Heizi quickly warned, "Be careful, they are still wild! I almost got bitten by...you know...earlier."
He was going to say ’giant salamander’, but Yan Fei had already instructed them not to mention the creature once they were outside Ma Yongming’s house – if Miss Xu Xiaoyan didn’t believe they had eaten a giant salamander, Yan Fei thought he might as well not tell her it was true, to avoid worrying her once she’s back in school, as she might think he was recklessly indulging himself at home.
That morning, after he and Heizi had left the house, Yan Fei came up with an excuse pretending he took the giant salamander from the river and put it on the water cart. The main goal was just to keep it a secret from the young girl.
"Hey, picky duck! You don’t want to eat these fresh vegetable leaves?" Heizi was getting frustrated as he tried to feed the birds.
"Indeed, even this white egret too. What is going on here? It must be someone’s fault for caging them and upsetting them to the point of not wanting to eat anything." Fang Xiaoqing added her own opinions to the conversation, taking the opportunity to sneer at ’someone’.
’Someone’ standing by, snorted with derision. Replying defiantly, "Both of you are idiots. These wild creatures mainly eat fish and meat. Has anyone ever fed them with grains? It’s an absolute waste of food! Even a pig is smarter than you two!"
Having said that, he ignored the prodigal fools, each showing a dismayed expression, and continued to provoke, "Some people feed birds with vegetable leaves, not necessarily out of kindness. Perhaps they plan to raise and fatten them for meat consumption later, deceiving some ignorant girls, taking people as fools as much as pigs, right?"
The silly girl was so preoccupied with Yan Fei’s confrontation that she promptly cast a doubtful glance at Heizi.
Heizi instantly bristled at her look and quickly defended, "Who said that? I just thought since the boss lady likes these birds, I should figure out a way to bring them back. Who’s thinking about eating them..."
Both of them stared at him, one scornful and one half distrustful, until he himself couldn’t stand their gazes and awkwardly admitted: "The boss lady is about to go back to school, and when she leaves, I’m afraid we won’t have time to feed these birds. It would be a pity if they were just released then..."
The silly girl immediately felt that she had been greatly deceived, exacerbated by not knowing that most of these birds ate fish. She had made a fool of herself! She rolled her eyes at Heizi, snorted, stood up and left.
Heizi was still trying to explain: "What I said is not wrong! These are wild animals. I estimate we may not even be able to keep them alive. At that time, we certainly won’t bury them if they die, right?"
Having made fun of the two, Yan Fei didn’t bother with them anymore and went back to practicing his calligraphy.
By evening, while Yan Fei was making dinner, a spiritless Miss Xu Xiaoyan returned.
As soon as entering the main door, he saw the cages placed against the wall, which immediately boosted his spirits. He exclaimed from outside, "Yan Xiaofei, I must say, I didn’t realize you had such a soft spot! Were you unable to bear parting with these adorable spirits of nature and brought them back?"
There were only the two of them using this kitchen. Having just returned, she knew without looking that Yan Fei was busying himself.
"No, actually, I thought I might as well keep them since you were so reluctant to let them go. The ones we’re missing weren’t killed either, I released them too. The rest are here, what do you suggest we do with them?" Yan Fei lied without a hint of embarrassment.
"Really? What should we do?" The girl too fell into a dilemma, crouched in front of the cage and started mumbling to herself, "Yanfei, what should we do with you? Do you want to soar into the blue sky again, but once you fly away, I won’t be able to see you anymore..."
Yan Fei ignored her venting, and continued with his own work.
After a while, she declared with certainty, "Alright, stop calling out. I know you all want to go home. Don’t worry, I’ll let you return..."
"Don’t move, let me free them," Yan Fei said, coming out quickly as he heard her talking to herself.
Even though these birds had been caged all day and were listless, it wouldn’t be desirable if she accidentally hurt them while clumsily trying to free them.
"Quack quack..."
Two ruddy Tadorna ferruginea flies into the sky...
"Ya ya..."
Two Mandarin ducks also flutter their wings and follow suit...
"Ahhhhh..."
This isn’t a bird call; it’s Heizi running over with a net, shouting as he runs, "Why did you let them go? I had even gotten them fish to eat!"
As he spoke, he held up the net tied to a long pole to show them the few small fish and shrimp inside, probably freshly scooped from the river. They were all still wriggling!
"Suspiciously warm gestures are usually for personal gains," Xu Xiaoyan muttered to herself. She had a pretty good idea of Heizi’s true motive from his behavior.
He was not exactly a compassionate person. He had sneaked out in the past to hunt wild birds and rabbits with dogs and had often shot birds in the forest. His past was riddled with such deeds.
"If you didn’t, then what were you doing?" Yan Fei looked at him sternly. "Did you think I dragged these birds to show to Uncle Ming and brought them back just to keep them for your amusement?"
"..." Heizi remained silent for a long time, unable to respond to Yan Fei’s words and implicit threat in his gaze.
After a while, Heizi muttered, "I was just afraid the birds would be tired and wouldn’t be able to make it back, ok? I got them some food for the journey, so they wouldn’t get hungry and be unable to fly..."
Upon seeing his expression filled with frustration and grievance, Xu Xiaoyan burst into laughter, "Okay, enough! Take those to feed the chickens. Once these birds are out of the cage, they wouldn’t starve themselves, right?"
She then turned to Yan Fei, "Come, come, hurry. Let’s let these two biggest egrets go now! I’ve had enough of looking at them!"
She had insisted on freeing these two white egrets last, so that she could watch them a little longer, and now it was finally their turn.
Yan Fei turned to open their cage and took out the white egrets, showing them to the girl. He then released the birds in the midst of her cheers.
Watching the two large birds elegantly spread their wings and gently take flight, the mistress looked mesmerized, her face slightly flushed.
Meanwhile, her helper, disheartened, took the net and started to walk back. Not going far, he sighed quietly, "I never thought! I thought only a person like me, Heizi, would sweet-talk girls. I never expected Xiaofei, such a straightforward person, to learn to lie as well. If I hadn’t reminded you and given you some ideas, could you bring these birds back..."
Yan Fei took in every word, not showing any guilt on his face.
Right now, he was delighting in the mistress’s happiness. Furthermore, Heizi had done him a favor that day, so he was ready to let all those comments slide.
A man’s maturity starts with learning how to please his woman, even if it’s a young man.
Being able to lie without batting an eye, intentionally flattering his beloved woman even if it’s deceptive, is indeed a commendable progression!
Considering this, Yan Fei indeed had ’matured’ significantly.
