"What on earth is Xiao Fei doing, could something have gone wrong? I have to go check." Ma Yongming was squatting in the courtyard cleaning yellow eels with Pang Fa, and after checking his wrist for time more times than he could remember, he couldn’t keep still any longer.

"Can you afford to leave now? The guests will be here soon and you’re thinking of going somewhere else first? Nevermind, I’ll run there quickly. I’m sure he’s fine, you’re worrying for nothing." Pang Fa hastily stood up.

"Alright, you go check quickly. I’m really worried that something might have happened to that kid. If anything happens, come back and call me right away." Ma Yongming didn’t continue cleaning either. He ran into the room and shouted, "Xiao Yue, get up quickly. Your parents are almost here, aren’t you going to get up and greet them?"

"Yes, yes, I know. It’s still early! I don’t know why you’re all in such a hurry, it’s barely past eight..." A lazy voice echoed from inside, then coquettishly added. "What’s the rush? Come here, kiss me and I’ll get up. Come on..."

Old Ma and his wife, who were tidying things up in the main room, blushed and quickly walked out into the courtyard, afraid they might hear something they shouldn’t.

Though Pang Fa didn’t hear what was said inside the room, he saw the couple’s awkward expressions, and without guessing, he knew Ma Yongming’s wife was up to her antics again. He’d seen this happen more than once or twice, so he just chuckled and got ready to go out on his motorcycle.

Just as he was about to reach the gate, he heard strange bird calls gradually coming from outside. As soon as he stepped outside, he called out, "Xiao Fei, why are you just getting here now? I was just going to look for you! Uncle Ming thought something had happened to you!"

Yan Fei’s voice rang out: "Didn’t I tell you last night that I couldn’t catch any pheasants? So, instead I caught a few other birds. Before dawn, I went to a neighbor’s house to buy some cages, otherwise, it wouldn’t look good to tie them with ropes. Heizi had gone to borrow a water cart from someone, otherwise we would have arrived earlier..."

The old couple heard the voices and rushed outside to greet them.

From outside came the sound of churning wheels and rushing water. Heizi and Yan Fei, one pulling and the other pushing, brought in a water cart.

Water carts weren’t common anymore. They were just flatbed carts with boards added around the top so water could be loaded and carried around. Making a water cart required skill; while it looked like just a bunch of boards put together, it had to be waterproof - and that required some craftsmanship.

Nowadays, fewer people made these things. Even households that needed to transport water could simply use a large plastic drum or an oil drum as a container which was much easier than using a water cart.

However, the water cart did have an advantage. It had no top, so whatever size the cart was, that’s how large of an object you could put in it.

The truth was, Yan Fei and Heizi’s fuss was over nothing; there were only two fish in the water cart.

Old Ma went over to help push the cart into the yard. As soon as he got close, he took a look inside and exclaimed, "Where did you catch such a big Mylopharyngodon piceus, you little fellow? It’s so rare, oh my goodness, there’s even more unusual stuff, is this a giant salamander at the bottom of the water? This creature is rare! Where did it come from?"

His wife nearby immediately interrupted his questioning: "You old fool, what are you asking about? The kids must have gone to great lengths to get these things, you just think about saying something nice...."

After scolding her husband, she herself took an interest: "There’s a wild rabbit too! Hey, what kind of bird is this? It looks beautiful! Its feathers are white like cotton; the two little birds are also so pretty. Ah, isn’t this, that..... Oh how can I forget, it looks so familiar, I can’t remember the name in my hurry now."

The cart-pulling Heizi laughed: "I don’t know about the others, but I do know these two. These are mandarin ducks! Amazing, right? This is the first time I’ve seen them in person, before, I’d only seen them on TV."

Pang Fa hadn’t had a chance to comment when Ma Yongming, who had hurridly emerged from the room, called out: "Don’t bother with the motorcycle anymore, since Xiao Fei has arrived, there’s no need to go to his place. Come with me to go pick up the guests! Hurry up, the first bus should have arrived by now."

While pushing his motorcycle, he greeted Yan Fei: "Xiao Fei, don’t leave yet. You can help with the fish in a bit. What kind of bird is this? It looks nice. Where did you get it from? Never mind, we’ll talk later. Thank you for your help! Uncle will thank you properly later."

The motorcycle roared to life, and he left the gate in a puff of smoke with Pang Fa.

The old lady was still busy fetching towels and water for Yan Fei and Heizi, but the old man was more relaxed: "Alright, don’t worry about it, you should start getting things ready. The kids will be here for a long time in the future, what’s there to be so polite about now?"

Yan Fei liked the old man’s character, so he didn’t hesitate to instruct the old couple, "Old Master Mother, don’t worry about us now. First, take this wine inside. Old Master Father, hurry and find a large basin. I’ll clean up these two fish in a bit."

He didn’t know the old couple’s names; he’d been asked to address them this way by his grandfather a long time ago, so he just got used to it.

The old couple happily got to work right away. Meanwhile, Heizi set the cages they brought near the wall, then started being mischievous again: "Master’s Mother, Master’s Mother, after putting away the wine, hurry and help me find things!"

And then again he called, "Master’s Father, Master’s Father! Come over and look at how we clean the fish. Who’s going to be the cook at noon? How do we cook this?"

At first, Yan Fei didn’t notice, but as he listened, he realized something was off. Seeing Heizi’s clowning around, he immediately figured out what was going on. He grabbed a handful of fish scales and threw them at him.

Heizi jumped but couldn’t dodge in time. He feigned a pitiful expression: "Why did you hit me? Master’s Father, Master’s Father, look, he bullies people like this every day..."

Yan Fei glared at him: "Hurry up and work. If you act up again, I’ll deal with you when we get back!"

The old couple now understood, too. The old lady chastised, "These children..."

Heizi was really just asking for it!

Yan Fei didn’t have many family ties with Ma Yongming, and he called him "Old Master Father" because of the relationship between the two old men. Heizi and Ma Yongming, on the other hand, had no familial relationship at all. Thus, it was really no big deal for him to call the old couple uncle and aunt.

However, he made a point of only starting to call them this after Yan Fei did, and he called them incessantly, as if he normally had such good manners. By his offensive antics and actions, he made it apparent that he was making a point of positioning himself above Yan Fei in terms of respect. He was free-riding on Yan Fei’s efforts!

Yan Fei was right to deal with him. People like him, if not put in their place every now and then, would strut around, sticking their noses in the air. To call him insufferably irritating didn’t overstate things; he was simply obnoxious to the core.

After dealing with him, Yan Fei once again focused on cleaning the fish. They hadn’t finished with the first big fish, when they heard the sound of the returning motorbike outside.

The old couple dropped everything and stood up quickly, prepared to go out and greet their guests.
