Chapter 256: Chapter 116: Money Makes the World Go Round: Practicing Calligraphy_1

Teacher Chang had a few words with Yan Fei and then turned to Xu Xiaoyan, saying, "Look at you, like a silly goose, not even asking about the cost before trying to mimic other’s social practices."

The girl just giggled and didn’t know how to respond.

"Never mind, you don’t need to do the legwork. I’ll ask around about the remaining schools. About the money..." Teacher Chang hesitated for a moment. "Forget it, you don’t have to worry about it. With your negotiation skills, it would be nice not to sell yourself short! Your goofy brother is also my student. I’ll make the decisions for both of you. When the time comes, I’ll make sure it’s slightly cheaper than others, you won’t lose out too much, don’t worry!"

The girl was quick to nod her head: "That’s great, Teacher will make decisions for us."

Teacher Chang, fearing distress on the girl, further assured: "If your silly brother disagrees, let him come to me. That little rascal got only three marks in the High School Entrance Examination, I still haven’t had a chance to scold him. I heard he’s doing well in the exams now, but you guys haven’t invited me over when you have guests, I’m keeping a tally!"

"He wouldn’t disagree! He said all money from selling the paper will be mine. However, I only intend to take half as my toil money. He still needs to pay for his school fees when the new term starts!" The girl finally reacted with happiness and uttered a few words.

Teacher Chang contemplated the girl’s words about the quantity of paper and initially froze, then smiled like a blooming flower: "You silly girl, your hard-earned money is not a small amount, don’t be afraid to hold it. He plays dumb and you’re dazed, you two really make a pair!"

Teacher Chang gave Xu Xiaoyan one last instruction before departing,: "Go tell your silly brother that I have not forgotten about him! I have been teaching for over twenty years, and this was the first time I’ve encountered a student who scored three points in the entrance exam. If I hadn’t been transferring out at the time, I wouldn’t have had the face to continue teaching here."

"If he dares to bully you, tell him I have your back! I’m not afraid if he attempts to avoid me, I can still teach for another twenty years. By the time your children come to school, I’ll still be incharge, see if he dares to misbehave!"

Abashed and filled with gratitude, the girl listened. With Teacher Chang in a rush to get to No.2 Junior High School, she was "sent off."

The dormitory accommodations of the new school in No.2 Junior High School are yet to be arranged for these old teachers like her, the priority being the newly allocated teachers. This is why she has to make the trip every day.

"Oh... so you contacted four schools, just to catch a glimpse of your headteacher, is this considered as finishing the contacts?" Yan Fei was completely perplexed. Particularly when the girl repeated word for word what Teacher Chang had said about him, it was an exact replica of the conversation.

"Of course, don’t forget, he’s also your headteacher. Student Yan Sanfen, your teacher remembers you!" The girl never missed an opportunity to reveal his dark history, a never-ending source of amusement.

"Can we not bring up the three-point thing?" Yan Fei frowned. "It was just a single error, right? As if it was something strange."

"Humph...fine, I won’t bring it up!" The girl generously let him off. "Hey, I got the impression from Teacher Chang that all this paper can fetch a good price! Let me do some quick calculations. I seem to recall that exam-sized papers were sold at three for a dime outside the school gate. How many do we have? I’ll go and count."

As she spoke, she ran out from the kitchen to the room where the papers were kept.

"Yan Xiaofei, aren’t you coming to help, don’t you realize I can’t carry them all by myself?"

Yan Fei was right behind her. At this moment, his face showed pure helplessness: "Usually we only buy a few at a time. Could schools buy them by sheets? How long will that take to count? We would die of exhaustion before finishing!"

"True!" The girl was staring at the high piles of papers that Yan Fei had stacked. Her words shocked her to her senses and she instantly felt that she had been foolish only a moment ago.

In order to hide her embarrassment, she glared at Yan Fei, "Humph, it’s all because of you. You made me so confused. Come, I have something for you to do. Weren’t we supposed to practise Chinese characters every day? It’s almost dark out, have you written anything yet?"

"What does this have to do with me! It seems like you’re the one obsessed with money..." Yan Fei muttered under his breath.

Just as the woman stepped out the door, she turned back: "Wait, we need paper first, what will you use to practise your characters?"

"Didn’t I keep two packages in your bedroom?"

"No, that’s too small. You need to practise larger characters! We need bigger ones, like this bundle. Come take it down!"

Yan Fei remained still, his face held an expression of profound grief and indignation as he looked at the girl.

After a moment, the girl began to laugh: "Fine, you don’t have to use the largest ones. Otherwise, if you need to write ten small or twenty large characters daily, you might not finish. Well... will this do?"

Yan Fei continued to look dismayed.

Could I even use up all this paper?

The packet he pointed to earlier, which was close to a meter wide and one and a half meter long, let alone the one he’s pointing to now that’s roughly a square meter. Who’d ever seen anyone use such large paper to practise characters with?

Seeing his expression, the girl burst out laughing: "Fine, fine, take the one that’s half the size. No matter how you look, it has to be done. For larger characters, use this and one sheet counts as two. For smaller characters, use this one! This is the smallest in the room, is this ok now?"

Yan Fei, seeing that the girl had made up her mind, didn’t argue any further. He went up with a grim face to collect two packets of paper and left.

The packet was indeed smaller, but the papers in the girl’s room that were the same size as the draft paper, those were specially chosen by him. Each sheet in her room was twice the size of this one. Picking up a rock only to drop it on his own foot; if he had known earlier, he would have placed a few bundles of smaller ones in this room.

"Here are the ink, brush and calligraphy sample. I’ve prepared everything for you, let’s get started!" Over the course of the day on top of her trip to the school, she had also prepared all the materials for him.

With his last excuse gone, he started to practise with a grimace on his face.

"Go easy on it, you’re holding the brush so tightly it’s creaking. Do you need to use so much force? Use it lightly, this brush is my treasure, at least be gentle..." The girl stood there, continually instructing him.

"Alright, continue like this, first practise big characters, then small characters. I’ll go wash the dishes now, keep practising! No slacking off!" With that, the girl went to the next room.

Yan Fei traced the calligraphy sample for a while, before growing impatient.

Deciding to just leave the sample to one side, he began writing by just looking at it. Soon he wasn’t even looking at the sample, he just wrote out whatever came to mind.

After a while, the girl returned and upon looking at his writing, grabbed his ear: "Yan Xiaofei, what on earth are you doing? Taking advantage of my absence to ruin all this paper! What on earth are you writing? I am a thief! I am a rogue... yeah, and you’re a bandit too..."

The daytime hero, turned into a soft-shelled shrimp, and was treated with various forms of torture.

Woof woof woof...

A few dogs sitting at the door watched their merciless owner suffer with joy.

Moo...

A cow interjected in due time, reminding them it was also watching the fun...
