Chapter 242: Chapter 102 Hard Road Reckless Youth_1

Pang Laosan was squinting his eyes, hugging his arms leaning against the seat, his body gently swaying with the bumping long-distance bus. Occasionally, he would open his eyes and a fierce look would dart out of his not-so-large eyes.

He was wearing a pair of loose plus-size jeans on his lower body. The small seat on the bus was too narrow to accommodate his height of more than 1.8 meters and somewhat obese body so one of his legs was simply stretched out into the aisle of the bus.

As for his upper body, he was only wearing a black vest, revealing a large area of his skin. The tiny vest was tightly stretched against his fat.

Despite the fat, on his dark skin, one could see at first glance the ’tattoos’ outside his vest, a fearsome, brilliant colored giant snake. The snakehead was baring its fangs, half of the head popping out from the vest of Pang Laosan’s chest, causing anyone who saw it to be on guard.

If he also had a bald head, and the completely exposed arms had tattoos of the Green Dragon and White Tiger, it would be as if he had written ’I’m not to be messed with’ on his face. Occasionally throw in a few ’hawk-like’ glances, it would be truly enough to frighten a child.

This look on the bus made the surrounding passengers only dared to sneak a peek at him, none dared to look directly at him.

It’s easy to be comfortable at home, but difficult when abroad.

This saying describes this era perfectly.

The first difficulty when going out is hailing a cab. Don’t ever think that you can hail a cab just by standing by the road, pay and get to your destination smoothly. According to the experience of Pang Laosan traveling around these two years, that is absolutely an illusion.

First of all, you have to make sure the vehicle you flagged down is legitimate, not some ’human trafficker’ gangster car. The so-called ’human trafficking’ is not really referring to slave trade, as that would be a grave matter and no one would dare be so blatant.

The ’human trafficking’ mentioned here means that they have a large coach with board signs along the road to pick up passengers, but in reality, the coach can’t actually reach the destination stated on the board.

For example, some don’t even have complete vehicle documentation, hence they don’t dare to operate intercity. So, they would deceitfully transport the passengers to a fixed location where there’s another coach that genuinely operates long-distance routes ready to ’buy’ their passengers, earning some commission — they might even be accomplices.

At this point, depending on the ’wickedness’ of the gangster car, the people in the two vehicles would jointly come up with all sorts of reasons to ask the passengers to supplement some of the fare.

Generally, these places are located halfway in the wilderness and they would not refund the passengers. Most passengers could only opt to pay more to avoid being abandoned there, adopting a peace-making attitude.

Some with bad luck could even be ’sold’ multiple times. This had happened to Pang Laosan several times. There would usually be a few burly men in these vehicles using intimidation and threats. Most people who are away from home tend to be cautious and conservative, they would just consider it bad luck and suffered a financial loss.

If they encountered a more regular coach, even if the passengers of two buses are merged due to a lack of passengers midway, they wouldn’t request for extra fees. That would be considered as good luck.

However, once on the road, these long-distance buses usually operate intercity and even between provinces. The road conditions are not that great on the long journey, such as from Tanghe County to the Provincial City, it would almost take an entire day.

During this time, people would get on and off the bus. You’d then have to be careful of those who operate petty thefts along the roads. In a nutshell, you have to always be on guard when you’re away from home, never sleep on the bus.

Particularly in the intercity areas, a group of people would grandly go around feeling and patting everyone’s luggage on the rack, claiming they are thieves, but in actuality, they are flaunting it almost as if they are robbers. Even the drivers who frequently travel on the road do not dare to offend these people, let alone the passengers who usually dare not voice out their anger.

This relies purely on experience. Someone like Pang Laosan might appear young and has only been on the road for two years, but he has become an ’old hand’ at dealing with such situations. He keeps his money inside his belt, and sometimes simply places it inside his underwear, ensuring it’s not easily accessible to ordinary people.

These days, there are specially sold underwear designed for hiding money, with a small zippered pocket. Placing money inside is considered the safest option.

Pang Laosan thought about this, subconsciously touched his crotch area, and then used an intentionally fierce look to scan the young man next to him, who seemed to be dozing off.

He mentally scorned the guy as a reckless youth — this guy seemed asleep the moment he got on the bus. If he didn’t even know the basic rule of not sleeping on a bus when travelling, what else could he be other than a fool?

In summer, people tend to wear thin clothing, and just by looking at the shape of this guy’s pockets, you could tell they were stuffed with money. This further establishes the guy as a young fool. He doesn’t understand the principle of not flaunting his wealth, isn’t walking around with money like this a clear invitation to thieves?

He deeply regretted that he let this guy sit on the inside earlier, simply because he coveted the convenience of sitting by the aisle.

He just wonders if this intimidating look could scare off people later when they encounter thieves. If it fails to deter them, and those thieves discover the large sum of money hidden inside his underwear while stealing from this guy, then it would truly be a case of a disaster spilling over onto him.

What a pity!

Raising his chubby arm, inked with the tattoo of the Green Dragon and the White Tiger, Pang Laosan rubbed his bald head. It was so hot, he almost broke into a sweat.

Don’t get me wrong. Even though he looks a bit unconventional, he’s definitely not some kind of a social misfit. He’s a formal employee in a state-owned enterprise in the Provincial City, currently a junior manager in the marketing department. A young man of merit and ambition, a true social elite.

The decision to adopt this get-up had caused quite a stir among his colleagues. During a payday two months later, they even rewarded him with a bonus for his ’sacrifice’, even though the management team couldn’t outwardly support this appearance for the sake of the company’s image. However, considering his sacrifice, they thought he deserved some reward.

He adopted this look out of necessity. It came in handy when dealing with gangster cars or thieves out there. At least, they would be polite to him when he faced them. Those thieves would hesitate before taking action against him. They’d assume he was one of their ’own kind’. How could they turn against their own?

Not wanting to get implicated by the reckless youth, Pang Laosan resumed practicing his ’eagle-wolf gaze’ on the back of the guy’s head in front of him.

To appear formidable, Pang Laosan had put so much effort into his expressions. He had carefully studied and imitated the mannerisms and expressions of various villains in dramas and movies, as well as several animals like tigers, lions, crocodiles, and vultures in the Animal World series, to perfect his ’ruthless’ look.

Unfortunately, he heard that the look of a murderer was even more menacing. He promised his buddy, a prison guard, to get him into a prison to see some murderers. But the tight-ass guard rejected his requests, so he was yet to have a chance to meet real life murderers.

There was one such person in his family, his grandfather, who was a veteran of many battles. But his grandfather was too strict. Given the fact that Pang Laosan dared to dress this way, you can tell he mustn’t have been an obedient young boy. Ever since he became an adult, each encounter with his grandfather resulted in a scolding. He didn’t dare look his grandfather in the eye.

After endless practice to the point where his eyes began to hurt and they had nearly reached the part of the road where pickpockets often struck, Pang Laosan started to get worried. He was carrying the cash collections from several counties. Not only were there bills in his underwear, but more were also tied around his thick jean legs.

With so much cash, he shouldn’t have been trying to save the bank’s commission fee. But Pang Laosan believed he had been out in the jianghu for many years, which, to be exact, was just about two years short of two months. This had given him enough experience, so he chose to carry the cash with him.

Unfortunately, he happened to run into this reckless youth who dared to carry a large sum of money in his pocket outside.

After rubbing his eyes, Pang Laosan finally gave up on maintaining his ’cold-blooded’ image and couldn’t help but nudge the young man next to him who seemed a little confused. "Hey, buddy..."

The young man immediately widened his eyes and looked at him, "What is it?"

Somehow, Pang Laosan felt a chill down his spine from the young man’s gaze even in this heat. It reminded him of the looks animals in the series Animal World had when hunting their prey.

Feeling a lump in his throat, Pang Laosan, who considered himself experienced, felt humiliated. But after thinking it over, he decided not to stoop to the level of this reckless youth.

So, he smirked at the reckless youth and whispered, "Brother, is it cash in that pocket of yours? It’s not a good idea to show off your wealth in public. Could you put the money in a more hidden pocket, even just the inside pocket would do?"

The reckless youth’s gaze wavered, then softened, revealing an unnatural smile. "It’s fine. What do I have to worry about? In broad daylight, who would dare to rob me?"

When outside, it’s better to keep it simple and not delve too deep.

Since the reckless youth ignored his advice, Pang Laosan didn’t want to push it.

Feeling desperate, he relied yet again on his Green Dragon and White Tiger tattoo and huge size hoping they would mask the reward he was carrying. May they work their magic once more!

He prayed that when thieves entered the bus, his massive size could protect this reckless youth. Hopefully, the thieves wouldn’t notice the cash in the reckless youth’s pocket and hence spare him any unnecessary trouble.

Pang Laosan didn’t realize his appearance, while causing petty criminals to shun him, would attract the attention of any determined thief.

To someone lacking social experience, Pang Laosan’s appearance would undeniably make him an obvious target.

Fortunately, his sudden act of kindness had caught the attention of a man planning to ’sweep the highway’. Therefore, the extremely dangerous reckless youth dropped his guard a little.

Otherwise, sitting so close together, an accidental touch could lead to misunderstandings, which would assuredly result in a dilemma—that’s the last thing Pang Laosan would want to see.
