Chapter 239: Chapter 99 Horses Don’t Get Fat Without Eating Night Grass_1
By the time Yan Fei managed to change his appearance, get dressed, and blend into the crowd, most of the bits and pieces from the factory were almost all moved out.
Everyone was racing against time, and any little bit they could carry away was progress. The easy-to-take items were certainly the first to go. What was left either got crushed under collapsed buildings and was now too solid to lift, or were the bodies of big machinery — their components all stripped off, leaving only the massive and heavy remnants that couldn’t be moved out immediately.
As the carryable stuff got less and less, people began organizing manpower to remove the debris from the collapsed factory buildings. Each time they dug something out, everyone rushed over, fighting to claim a piece of the bounty.
Watching the scramble, Yan Fei instinctively started looking for a deserted corner, scouting for something heavy that others couldn’t lift but was suitable for him to take.
He was very familiar with all the factory buildings in the compound and soon found a place with a few large machines lying around. All detachable parts from the machines had been stripped off, and all the movable items around them were gone. Therefore, no one was around here.
Even more importantly, this spot was shielded from the crowd’s view by half a wall. So, he could do things here without being seen from the outside. Judging from the few left-over machines, Yan Fei reckoned he could probably move them. Without further ado, he quickly picked one up.
No sooner had the machine left the ground, he disappeared, only to reappear empty-handed. This happened a few more times, and soon only the smallest machine was left. He made an effort to lift it, feeling rather surprised.
This was the smallest machine, and yet it was so heavy. In the dim light, he took a careful look and realized that the machine was firmly fixed to the ground because it was so small.
Too lazy to use brute force, he leisurely pulled out a wooden pillar from the nearby pile of debris, shoved it under the machine to pry it up. But just as he started, there was a sound, and he paused.
Soon, the footsteps echoing from the other side of the wall got clearer. Yan Fei had great eyesight. As soon as the person came over, he recognized that it was a trembling old man.
While others were carrying torches and flashlights, he was holding an air-dying lamp in one hand and a bottle of liquor in the other. Chuckling to himself as he walked, if not for all these people around, Yan Fei would have thought he had finally seen a ghost.
These air-dying lamps are rare to come by these days. The bottom could hold some kerosene, and the top was a glass cover wrapped in iron wire, windproof, hence the name air-dying lamp.
Apparently, the old man had not expected anyone to be in this area. Yan Fei was standing in a spot obscured by the wall, shrouded in darkness. The old man was nearly upon him before he noticed Yan Fei, and it gave him quite a start.
Only after he settled down, he raised the air-dying lamp to look at Yan Fei, and then chuckled at Yan Fei, "Young man, everyone’s moving things away. Why aren’t you in a hurry? Hurry up, take away as much as you can, and empty this factory..."
Upon closer inspection, Yan Fei figured the old man probably wouldn’t last more than a few days. The feeling of being on his last breath was similar to that of old dinosaurs in the prehistoric world being ambushed and hunted by carnivores. If not for his breathing, Yan Fei would think he was already dead.
Moreover, the old man’s creepy way of speaking gave him the creeps. He couldn’t be bothered with this nutty old man; Yan Fei just turned around and left. After all, there were other things in this broad space that he could move.
As he was leaving, he could still hear the old man muttering, "Hurry up and move... move... it’s good when it’s empty... it’s good when it’s empty..."
What a nutter!
Yan Fei cursed in his mind. An old man, instead of staying at home, came out to this chaos. Seeing the way he walked, he couldn’t carry away anything anyway!
After another round of searching, Yan Fei started to resent himself.
Why did he destroy everything so thoroughly before? Searching for a higher wall for cover was now impossible because everywhere there were people. Although the torches were bearable, those flashlights flashed randomly like strobe lights, rendering it impossible for him to move about undetected.
Furthermore, the crowd kept getting bigger, obviously woken by the ones already making away with hauls. Or probably those who had run home to drop their loot were back, along with reinforcements.
He had no chance to strike!
Yan Fei was quite frustrated.
He couldn’t go where there were people; they were locals who came in groups. Being a lone stranger from elsewhere, he attracted too much attention.
Lingering alone was arousing suspicion, and in his wandering, he ran into that old man again.
The old man still carried that insane look, seeing someone idle; he immediately summoned them: "Hurry and move... move away everything... whatever you take home is yours..."
Before Yan Fei could avoid him, the old man had spotted him again, walked up to him and started making a fuss. "Young man, you’re all fit and strong, why aren’t you moving things? What are you lingering for? Oh, difficult to handle alone? Let me tell you, see that place over there? No one’s there. All you need to do is pry open the door, and whatever’s inside is yours. Maybe there’s even money inside..."
Although Yan Fei didn’t care much for the old man’s eerie voice, a look in the direction pointed by the old man cheered him up.
Indeed, there was an unoccupied place.
It was near the factory entrance, a place with a row of two-storey buildings.
Originally, he didn’t demolish the building because he thought it was not a factory. Now he sees that the doors are all closed and probably locked. These farmers only dared to move stuff from areas that looked like junk heaps. No one ever went to this small two-story building.
Yan Fei turned his head and walked towards it. Afraid that he might draw attention to himself and encourage others to go and dismantle the door for things, he pretended to be indifferent and headed in that direction.
Arriving at a doorway, checking that no one was paying attention to him, he pushed the door where a lock was hidden, and with a click, the door opened.
He quickly slipped in and shut the door behind him, then chuckled to himself.
Not because the room was full of stuff, but because he didn’t need light and wasn’t afraid of someone seeing him through the window.
There wasn’t much in the room, just some tables, chairs and benches, all in chaos. Probably left behind in a hurry. The door seemed to have been locked later.
Never mind, he would take whatever he could from the room. You never know when things might be useful.
Having emptied one room, he moved onto the next one, without hesitation, he took all the things that he could carry, from paper on the tables, to pictures and maps from the walls, and even a broom behind a door.
However, there wasn’t much of value on the first floor; there were only a few rooms that looked like office spaces, some dormitories and storage rooms. Regardless, Yan Fei cleaned them all out, reacting resolutely, never leaving anything behind.
Even the little kitchen was not spared, Yan Fei took pots and pans from there as well.
It was not until the last room on the first floor that he found anything genuinely valuable.
This room was a small warehouse, filled with packaged paper. There was only a narrow passage to walk beside the wall, and the rest was stacked to the ceiling.
The space was equivalent to three or four rooms, filled with different types of white paper, from notepaper to exercise book size to whole uncut sheets of varying thickness.
Yan Fei laughed as he moved the items, happy that the cave on Vegetable Garden Island was large enough. He probably wouldn’t need to buy notebooks or paper for the rest of his life!
Having cleared the first floor, he proceeded to the second.
All the rooms on the second floor were offices, filled with large and small office tables, different chairs and cabinets. Yan Fei did not mind used stuff; he took everything, not even sparing a bead from an abacus. And, of course, calculators were not left behind either.
After finally clearing all the rooms, he stepped out of the last room, taking a long, satisfied breath at the doorway.
It’s so exhilarating to have gained so much!
Standing on the top floor, looking at the busy crowd in the factory, Yan Fei laughed. I’ll leave the rest for you, I’ll move again when you’re worn out.
So, he stood on the top floor, vanished for a moment, and when he reappeared, he was holding a chair. He set it down and comfortably watched others moving things.
It was dark anyway, nobody would see him. Besides, nobody would notice him in the corner on the top floor. They’re all busy moving things!
After waiting for a while, he saw people leaving and more coming, but the crowd remained unchanged. Yan Fei was in no hurry. Indeed, he would come back tomorrow night if he left tonight. If they moved everything while he stayed put, he would end up with nothing.
He mumbled to himself that one doesn’t get rich without side income! Tonight, we might make a fortune. When those machines are moved, even selling them for scrap metal would fetch a good amount of money!
While calculating how much money he would earn, he suddenly heard a distant sound of a police siren. Despite the noise from the people moving items and tractors, Yan Fei instantly recognized it.
The people in the factory area hadn’t noticed yet, and within a few moments, several vehicles had arrived.
There was a police car at the front, very high-end, followed by an ordinary sedan and two Jeeps.
The sight of the police car immediately made people pause their activities, but there were quite a few who hadn’t noticed and were still moving things around.
As soon as the vehicles stopped, a person came out of the front police car with a megaphone and started shouting, "Folks, stop moving! Stop moving! These things belong to someone; taking them home would be committing a crime!"
After the megaphone announcement was repeated a few times, people got out of the cars behind as well.
Out of the sedan came two middle-aged men in suits, along with a young man wearing glasses. The men coming out of the two Jeeps were all policemen.
