Chapter 238: Chapter 98: Really Good Luck_1
"Yan Xiaofei, aren’t you close with the owner of the beef restaurant? Why didn’t you invite them to the gathering last time?" On the bus into the county town, Xu Xiaoyan asked Yan Fei as they drove past Laowu’s Beef Restaurant.
"They’re always extremely busy here, they have no time at all. It’s enough if I just go and talk to them later." Yan Fei explained.
He was not about to admit that he had simply forgotten due to being too busy himself! He consoled himself, thinking about how busy Fifth Brother was, and how it would be a waste of a day’s business for them if he invited them to a feast.
"You really must be joking; you came to inform them as soon as you got the test scores, but now that the admission letter has arrived, you’re silent. Aren’t you afraid they’re going to say you’re being insincere?"
"There won’t be any problems, they definitely won’t mind such trivial matters! Just saying one word to him is enough." Yan Fei didn’t make a fuss about it at all.
Now that he thought about it, given the temperament of Fifth Brother’s family, they definitely wouldn’t care. They might not even enjoy the atmosphere at the town’s banquet. It was more comfortable for them to just come and have fun here!
However, he still felt a bit guilty as they were about to enter. He was the one at fault; he should have made a trip to inform them from the start. It was mainly because he was too busy, and no one knew that he had a friend in the county, so no one reminded him.
After thinking about it, he pulled Xu Xiaoyan towards the river bank.
"What’s wrong? Aren’t you going?" Xu Xiaoyan asked, puzzled.
"Hehe, it’s not appropriate to go empty-handed, let’s bring some gifts." Yan Fei said with a toothy grin.
The gift was free; he could just go for a quick swim in the river. During the summer the water level was high and the fish were active, so it was really easy.
But it really was luck on his side, he splashed the water and came up with a big Blackfish more than two feet long. He swam after it in the water, just as he grabbed the fish, he felt something sweep past his tail. Turning his head, he was even more excited. He had chased away an Old Turtle almost the size of a small basin.
The Blackfish is also known as Wuli, such a big one is usually found only in the big rivers, and it can’t grow in smaller waters.
With these two in his possession, he didn’t need to catch anything else. He carried them to Laowu’s Beef Restaurant, and as soon as he entered, Yan Fei shouted, "Sister-in-law, look at what I got you!"
These two creatures were indeed very attractive. As soon as he entered, all the guests’ attention was attracted.
Fifth Sister-in-law was absolutely delighted, "Goodness, Yan Fei, where did you get such luck, bringing such a big Wuli and Old Turtle? You can hardly find one even on normal days, but you’ve gotten two at once?"
"It’s all your luck, Sis. I thought of giving you two fish, so I caught these. You don’t need to catch anything else since you have these two." Yan Fei replied, feeling slightly guilty.
Fifth Brother was happy, but his mind was quick, "Good boy, you’re very slick, aren’t you? Your wife’s admission notice came, and you forgot to tell us. Aren’t you feeling guilty now?"
"Hehe..." Yan Fei just grinned. When Xu Xiaoyan was referred to as his wife by Fifth Brother in front of everyone, her face reddened a little.
Someone started to cheer, "Fifth Brother, you’re benefiting but playing innocent, this Old Turtle is so big, it will surely make you bleed from the nose! Your wife can’t handle your torment now, why don’t you give the Old Turtle to me!"
Fifth Sister-in-law’s face flushed slightly, and she cursed the man who cheered.
"Come, let me see." Everything had gotten so lively that even the chef in the back was startled. "You little rascal, you’ve learned cooking from me for such a long time, and you don’t even know pregnant women can’t eat turtles. Quickly, give it to me. I’ll show you my skills, and we will have it together in the night."
He took the Old Turtle and Wuli from Yan Fei, and said to Xu Xiaoyan: "So you’re his wife. Good. You’re a lucky man. Don’t fail to cherish her. You both can wait here. I’ll leave the Wuli for your sister-in-law, and we’ll finish off the Old Turtle tonight."
As his daughter-in-law’s belly grew larger, the old man’s smiles became more frequent and his voice louder. Among all the customers in the restaurant, his voice was the loudest.
Yan Fei wanted to follow him into the kitchen, but the old man waved him off: "Go and accompany your wife, I’ll take care of the food."
Only when Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan had found a seat did Fifth Sister-in-law have time to ask: "Was it your admission notice? Which university is it?"
"Provincial University, they’ve been admitted to the Law School. My wife will be a university student in the future." Yan Fei replied, obviously proud.
"That’s great!" Fifth Brother and Fifth Sister-in-law both exclaimed in unison. They couldn’t contain their envy.
After a while of idle chatter, and the sky had turned dark, the old chef finally served us with a big bowl containing rural dishes, saying ecstatically, "Let this university student here taste the flavors of the countryside!"
He placed the bowl right in front of Xu Xiaoyan.
"Pick from here, yes, right here. This part has the best flavor. Try some..." The chef’s devoted service was impressive, even guiding us on how to eat. "This size of Old Turtle is rare these days, everyone should have a taste. I will make a few side dishes in a bit. You guys continue eating first."
The dinner was unusually lively. The old man’s enthusiasm was not something anyone could readily handle.
However, no one really pressured Yan Fei to drink since everyone was aware of his young age. He was left alone to sip his liquor.
When leaving after the meal, Fifth Brother caught Yan Fei’s attention saying, "After a while, when the school opens, avoid hitching a ride from your place. Come here and I will arrange a trusted person to drive you. It isn’t very safe on these roads, so it puts the mind at ease by having someone look out for you."
Yan Fei had previously ignored Xu Xiaoyan’s warning about the unsafe long-distance bus journey. Now, even Fifth Brother advised the same, he felt the need to be alert. He immediately nodded: "Sure, I’ll consider it. Anyway, when school starts, I am planning to go and see their university anyway!"
After bidding goodbye to Fifth Brother, there was no pick-up to go back to Sancha River Town. Certainly, Xu Xiaoyan wouldn’t want to go to the family members’ yard at the fertilizer factory, so they had to walk back again.
Worried that the girl was tired, Yan Fei volunteered to carry her as soon as they left the city. After talking for a while, she once again fell asleep. They got to the cattle farm drowsily, Yan Fei even had to lift her across the river when the water levels rose - if he hadn’t, the girl would have gotten soaked.
Back at the cattle farm, Yan Fei put her down on the bed. Once she fell asleep again, he got busy with his work.
He planned to check out the patrol near the river and gather some information about the condition of the demolished factory.
Transforming into a cinerous vulture, he flew towards the paper factory. However, before he reached there, he noticed a strange amount of people gathered around the site.
There was quite a crowd. It turned out Yan Fei had come at the right time as inside and outside the factory was filled with a lot of people. Some held flashlights, others torches, and some were carrying various tools, creating a lively atmosphere.
Yan Fei was utterly puzzled. Could it be they really found a giant snake?
But when he reached the site, he realized it had nothing to do with the myth of the giant snake. They were just there to clear the factory and move stuff.
In the middle of the night, these people were dismantling the factory and moving the machines. Even the tables, chairs, benches, and odds and ends were being taken. Basically, people were seen moving everything they could.
The cinerous vulture landed in a cornfield and transformed into a Compsognathus. He sprinted to the edge of the factory and eavesdropped for a bit. It seemed like these people were here for a reason.
Apparently, there were rumors that the factory owner didn’t plan to keep the factory running anymore. After hearing that everything was abandoned and up for grabs, the locals decided to flock there and quickly grab whatever they could. They believed anything that belonged to no one before could be theirs once they took it home. Would there be anything left if they waited till morning?
Yan Fei eventually figured out why the machines in the destroyed factory were in ruins. The previous night when he had transformed into a giant snake in the rain, the machines were demolished in the process. Continuous rainfall had further damaged the machines, rendering them merely valuable for scrap value. The owner, who was traumatized by the incident, didn’t even want to salvage the scraps. Rumour had it that the recovery from the sale of these scraps might not even be enough to hire workers - this was due to the new local folklore which suggested that the factory had been cursed by a deity, a dragon god sent by heaven. Who would dare to come then?
This myth seemed incredibly real. The size of the giant snake led people to believe that it was a dragon in the making. By ruining the factory, it had successfully accomplished its ultimate test and ascended to heaven. How else would such a massive python appear out of nowhere and then suddenly vanish despite extensive searches?
This legend was convincing enough to gain credibility. A small shrine consisting of an incense table and incense burner was set up by the riverbank, right where Yan Fei had previously entered the water transformed as a small crocodile. Occasionally, people gathered around to light incense and offer their prayers, asking the dragon god to show mercy and provide favorable weather.
There were still patrol guards nearby, but regardless of their advice, the locals were committed to worshiping at this makeshift shrine.
This worship ritual was conducted by the villagers before taking stuff from the factory. These villagers started moving stuff during the evening, and by the time Yan Fei arrived, the factory was almost emptied.
Everyone was in a festive mood, taking home various items - some even used handcarts to transport their collected goods. They were bustling with joy as they made their way home.
Yan Fei considered himself lucky that day. If he had decided to come another day, he wouldn’t have encountered such a lively scene from the factory teardown. He guessed even if he had arrived a bit later, he wouldn’t have seen such a bustling atmosphere.
After observing the scene for a while, he noticed people hitting and dismantling the large machines in order to move them, despite the difficulty. Suddenly, it dawned on him: "Am I being ridiculous? Why am I not taking advantage of this opportunity to look for useful things to take home like everyone else?"
