Chapter 237: Chapter 97: Still Need a Ticket_1
"We’ve paid this time, so we’ll definitely get to see the python, right?" Xu Xiaoyan asked the man sitting behind the small table in front of her, her eyes wide with anticipation, for the third time.
The man, wearing glasses, had already displayed a wry smile after her second inquiry. Not wanting to argue with a girl, he reassured her with a patient explanation: "Don’t worry, miss. This time you’ll surely see the python. It isn’t very large, though... You’ll know when you go in. If I’m lying to you, I’ll refund your money when you come out."
You can’t blame Xu Xiaoyan for being persistent. This was the third time they had to pay an entrance fee to see the python, not to mention the travel expenses. Who wouldn’t wince at the cost of these tickets?
Earlier, the two of them had rushed out of the carnivore section only to remember that they hadn’t yet seen the python, which was the main reason for their visit. After inquiring with a staff member, they learned that they had to come to a place called the Reptile Pavilion to see the python.
They followed the directions given, winding through various paths, until they reached a corner of the park where they found the Reptile Pavilion. To their surprise, they discovered that the man sitting at the entrance was selling tickets.
Even Yan Fei felt a bit disgruntled. If that weren’t the case, he would have paid the entrance fee and brought Xu Xiaoyan inside quickly, rather than having her ask the ticket seller repeatedly.
Only when Xu Xiaoyan finally decided to go in did Yan Fei pull out the money for the tickets.
Xu Xiaoyan felt another pang of regret. The cost of entering this pavilion was the same as entering the zoo, two dollars per person.
After they entered, they did indeed see the ’python’. It was enormous, even larger than a common domestic snake you’d find in rural areas.
Well, not exactly larger, but thicker. There’s a reptile known as the Flower Red Long Worm in Wan City, which might be a type of Lycodon rufozonatus, a common domestic snake. If we’re comparing lengths, then they’re probably comparable to this ’python’.
Apart from the python, there were also several unusually ugly little lizards and a few baby crocodiles.
Yes, the baby crocodiles were slightly smaller than the Sarcosuchus that Yan Fei had transformed into. On the other hand, the lizards weren’t too bad, they were larger than the adult house geckos you’d usually see on walls at home. Yan Fei, who wasn’t usually concerned about money, thought that this two-dollar entry fee was quite ’good value’.
Also, these little creatures all seemed quite timid, huddling at the back of their glass enclosures or hiding among the twigs and puddles, and lacked spirit.
Especially after Xu Xiaoyan expressed extreme dissatisfaction, these little creatures appeared even more terrified under the malicious glare of Yan Fei.
Animals possess a far greater sensitivity to danger than humans. Otherwise, why didn’t the predators in the carnivore zone react when provoked by visitors, but roared in response to Yan Fei simply mimicking a dinosaur’s roar? Though their reaction was partly due to Yan Fei’s extensive interaction with dinosaurs and his ability to imitate their cries, it was mainly a response to the aura of danger he exuded due to his violent actions in the dinosaur world.
Xu Xiaoyan was truly disappointed and regretful, feeling that they shouldn’t have entered this small house in the end. She kept saying they had wasted the last two dollars. Although two dollars wasn’t a big sum, it was disappointing to have spent it just to see such little creatures. It really gave the impression of being ripped off.
Despite the experience not being completely perfect, after the two of them left the Reptile Pavilion, Xu Xiaoyan felt that leaving just like that would make them feel short-changed. So, they took another round within the zoo. Despite the disappointment, they enjoyed the visit.
Xu Xiaoyan did not want to leave as she felt she hadn’t seen enough for the three times entrance fee they paid. She wouldn’t leave until her stomach growled with hunger!
In fact, Yan Fei was quite upset. He has a unique dinosaur world, filled with all kinds of wonders. Yet, his wife was so fascinated by a mere zoo. This made him feel somewhat uncomfortable, so he decided to let Xu Xiaoyan have her fun.
After leaving the zoo, Xu Xiaoyan still insisted on taking a stroll around the park despite her hunger.
There wasn’t much to see in the park at this time. Most of the trees and the scenery were lacklustre. The only attractions were vendors selling toys, including the shooting of balloons with air guns, a popular street game of the time.
Xu Xiaoyan wasn’t really interested in these games. And considering they cost money, the two of them just walked around the park and left after a brief visit.
Over dinner, Xu Xiaoyan shared her thoughts. Overall, she was quite satisfied with the outing. Though she initially wanted to see the python, she felt happy seeing everything else. The only disappointment was the python itself.
In Xu Xiaoyan’s words, there was an unexpected plot twist!
As there was still time after dinner, Yan Fei took Xu Xiaoyan to a large shopping mall and bought her a few clothes. By now, Xu Xiaoyan had stopped opposing his reckless spending. Not because he was buying things for her, but because she realised that he simply didn’t care about money and wouldn’t listen to her advice on saving.
The reason these two country folks went to the big shopping mall to buy clothes was rather hilarious.
They had learned that there was a commercial city in the downtown area, which was a large clothing market. When they excitedly ran inside and asked for the prices, they were so shocked that they ran straight back out, resorting to buying clothes from the mall in the end.
They didn’t realise that the prices quoted in the local commercial city were greatly inflated. A normal pair of jeans was priced at three or four hundred dollars, higher than the monthly wage of an ordinary worker. But in reality, they could have bought it for around thirty dollars after bargaining.
Both of them had no idea how to bargain. They had only bought clothes individually twice in their town – once with the help of classmates, and the other time when Xu Xiaoyan was strapped for cash and had no choice but to bargain.
The situation in the county was entirely different from the city. They were frightened off by the high prices and instead thought the clothes in the mall, priced between several tens to a hundred dollars, were quite cheap.
After buying the clothes, Xu Xiaoyan refused to let Yan Fei carry her back home. It was still early, so they asked for directions and flagged down a vehicle heading back to their county town.
The moment Xu Xiaoyan got on the vehicle, she was as vigilant as if bracing for imminent danger, clutching her clothes tightly, looking suspiciously at everyone as if they had ill-intentions. Yan Fei was puzzled by her behaviour.
"What’s going on?" Yan Fei couldn’t help but ask when he saw Xu Xiaoyan vigilantly staring with eyes wide.
"Be careful, my sisters told me that there are a lot of thieves on long-distance buses. They come in large groups, even. Keep an eye on your money!" Xu Xiaoyan whispered in his ear.
"Really?" exclaimed Yan Fei, finally relaxing. He had thought something was bothering Xu Xiaoyan. "Is this what you call a long-haul ride? The county town is just a short distance away, and there are even two toll stations with guards on duty. What are you worried about?"
"Really?" Xu Xiaoyan remained unconvinced.
"Really, I’ve taken this route several times and haven’t seen any thieves," Yan Fei reassured her.
Xu Xiaoyan remained vigilant for a while longer but decided that none of the passengers looked like thieves, finally allowing her to relax.
As soon as she relaxed, she started feeling sleepy, leaning against Yan Fei and falling asleep shortly after. She didn’t wake up until they were about to reach the county town.
They had woken up early in the morning and had been running around all day. Xu Xiaoyan, who didn’t have Yan Fei’s strength, was exhausted.
