Chapter 236: Chapter 96 Waking Up a Tiger_1
"Wow, Yan Xiaofei, come look at this bird, it’s so pretty!" As soon as she entered the zoo, Xu Xiaoyan forgot about the double admission fee and started to frolic around.
For Yan Fei, these things were too ordinary. Apart from being pretty, they had no value. In fact, they might not even be as attractive as the four-winged Microraptor.
But of course, he wouldn’t dent the girl’s enthusiasm. He followed her from east to west, then from south to north. If she found joy in looking at the animals, he found joy in watching her.
"Why is this fallow deer without antlers! Were they sawn off? How brutal, it doesn’t look good without antlers."
"This zebra looks quite good! Oh, there’s a camel too! Why is its hump crooked?"
"Look, two big eagles! Ah, the sign says they’re vultures! They look so much better and more majestic than the ones on TV!"
"What a pretty swan!"
No matter what she saw, she was excited and provided a commentary on each one, while Yan Fei amused himself by playing along.
When she talked about deer, horses, and camels, he began to calculate how much meat he could get from killing such an animal, and how many meals it would suffice; when she talked about vultures, he estimated whether his transformations into a cinerous vulture would be larger, and when it came to swans, he started to imagine what swan eggs tasted like...
"Come and see, there’s Monkey Mountain! So many little monkeys, they look much more lively than the ones we’ve seen before!" She started calling him again.
Yan Fei quickly advanced, took a look and said, "Of course, these monkeys are free to roam. The ones we saw performing on the streets are beaten daily, it’s strange if they could act lively."
"As if you know so much." Yan Fei made a rare comment and was immediately met with a roll of her eyes. "Don’t I know that already? Why won’t these monkeys come over? Are they hiding in their mountain caves?"
There weren’t many people in the zoo, mostly parents with their children, or couples like them. If more people were present, she wouldn’t make such a fuss.
But since there were fewer people, that’s why the monkeys wouldn’t come out! The weather was so hot, no one was throwing food at them, who would want to come out?
Seeing her somewhat disappointed, Yan Fei had an idea: "Watch and see, I’ll call them over."
Under her watchful gaze, Yan Fei took a deep breath and roared towards Monkey Mountain.
"Ugh..."
As soon as he roared, the effect was excellent. The few monkeys that were on Monkey Mountain suddenly shrieked and rushed into the mountain cave. Along with those who were already at the cave entrance, they ran to the depths that were unseen and never came out again.
She was startled and then burst out laughing, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably: "Yan Xiaofei, I wonder if you’ll ever boast again! You said you’d call the monkeys over. Look at that weird shout of yours, you’ve scared them away!"
Yan Fei looked bored and remained silent.
Such a rip-off, his call was the same used by Deinonychus to call their companions. Couldn’t these monkeys understand it? Look how timid they are, even hiding away.
This was incredibly embarrassing. Monkey Mountain is quite the attraction, there was a couple across and several parents with children. Now they were all looking over from the other side of Monkey Mountain.
However, that wasn’t the end of it, something even more annoying was about to happen.
On the opposite side, after a pause, a child began to cry, demanding their parents to call the monkeys out immediately!
She hadn’t finished laughing when she heard the child’s sobbing, which only made her laugh even more, but she quickly pulled Yan Fei, who had caused the chaos, away.
"Yuck... This smell is disgusting!" She pulled him down a staircase, and as soon as they turned the corner she stopped laughing and covered her nose.
It was the smell of foxes, it was really stinky. This instantly shattered the illusions she had about the fox spirits in the stories: "Oh my, why are foxes like this? The white foxes on TV always look so fairylike, but these foxes are so ugly, let’s go quickly..."
After the foxes came the wild boars, wolves, and then the black bears and lions. Like before, she commented on each, though her voice became softer each time. The carnivore section was quite popular. Despite the unpleasant smell, there were more people here than anywhere else.
When they got to the tigers, she was unsatisfied again: "Why is this tiger lying down all the time! I wanted to see if it’s as majestic as I imagined!"
Actually, in this hot weather, most animals just lie down, it’s just that the previous animals weren’t attractive enough for Xu Xiaoyan.
Yan Fei offered again: "It’s my turn to do something, watch me, this time I’m sure I can get it up."
He didn’t believe the tiger would be as timid as the monkeys.
But this time, he didn’t shout loudly. His loud shout earlier had been too embarrassing since everyone knew it was him.
After some thought, he began to make a series of strange sounds from his throat.
"Cackle cackle..."
As the sound, which seemed like a bird cry but had a hint of an ancient carnivore, rang out from the Deinonychus, the lazy tiger immediately rolled over, letting out a cautious growl and turning its gaze towards us.
"It’s up! Look at its mean eyes! They’re not about to charge out, are they?" Xu Xiaoyan instinctively grasped Yan Fei’s arm.
"No worries, there’s a cage between us!" Yan Fei patted the girl’s arm. "Even if it gets out, it’s not a hug deal, I’m here! Watch me give it a fright."
He shielded the girl slightly behind him and made another sound at the tiger.
"Cackle cackle..."
This was the call of provocation.
Yan Fei had been observing the hunting habits of Deinonychus these days and heard their call several times.
Upon hearing the sound, the tiger, now on high alert, roared again. Its amber-black eyes locked firmly on Yan Fei.
The tiger’s low roar attracted the attention of others, who were now looking in our direction.
Not only the tiger had roared, but also the lion next door, which issued a low rumble in its throat. It was laying down at first, but it had dropped on its front when Yan Fei first called out, and now it had stood up.
With the nearby onlookers noting the roused tiger, they readied themselves to come over. When they noticed the stirring lion, even more people began to shuffle our way.
Yan Fei was oblivious to the scene, he glanced at the lion, then returned to staring into the tiger’s eyes. Comparing to land crocodiles and Deinonychus he wouldn’t regard lions or tigers seriously.
Feeling the girl gripping his arm tighter, Yan Fei knew she was getting anxious. He gave her arm a comforting pat, then he stared back at the tiger and suddenly widened his eyes and made a sound.
"Cackle cackle..."
"Roar..."
"Roar..."
Almost instantly, not only did the tiger let out a massive roar and posed to pounce, but the lion next door also roared in response.
Yan Fei laughed. "See, that’s the air of the tiger and the lion. I am impressive, right?" He took a step back, pulling the nervous girl with him.
The girl playfully scolded him, "You just know how to tease."
Only then did they notice the numerous, peculiar stares from the people around them.
As they were preparing to leave in haste, a man ran down the stairs and, after glancing at the tiger behind the fence, anxiously asked, "What happened to the tiger just now? Why did it roar?"
Yan Fei replied before anyone else could say a word, "We don’t know, we just came and they were lounging about, then suddenly they started yelling at each other. We were quite scared!"
Upon hearing his reply, no one interfered by adding how he had made strange noises toward the tiger and lion.
The man, presumably a zookeeper, gave them a dubious look, then turned his attention back to the tiger. Shifting his gaze between the tiger and the lion, he mumbled to himself, "Weird. It’s like they want to fight, but they’re separated by a wall."
Since the fence was multi-layered and included bar and wire meshes, the zookeeper didn’t suspect anyone of provoking the animals with sticks or anything. Plus, no one would have such a long stick on them.
Xu Xiaoyan was having a hard time refraining from laughing. She grasped Yan Fei’s arm in mock fright, "Let’s go! This is quite frightening."
The pair quickly moved down the steps, leaving behind a crowd of onlookers with bewildered expressions.
They hadn’t gone far when they heard a child’s voice from behind, "Uncle, uncle, I think I saw that man yelling at the tiger just now."
The two ran even faster.
Once they were out of sight, Xu Xiaoyan cautiously looked around. Seeing no one, she giggled, "Yan Xiaofei, what kind of call was that? You managed to wake up a lion and a tiger!"
This was a challenging question. If Yan Fei told the truth, she would accuse him of bragging, but he couldn’t come up with a good lie. So he simply turned his head, putting on an air of mysterious superiority, "I only shouted a couple of times. But hey, what can I say? I’m just that amazing! Tigers and lions are scared of me. Didn’t you see how they were both roaring at me, begging for mercy?"
The girl burst out laughing, leaving her bent double. Every time she managed to straighten up, she caught sight of Yan Fei’s swaggering pose and burst out giggling again, hitting him playfully, "You and your antics, Yan Xiaofei. You’re going to kill me with laughter..."
After a bout of laughter, the girl finally stopped to catch her breath. She was so exhausted she was about to collapse on him. Looking around, she asked quizzically, "We’ve been all around, why haven’t we seen the python yet?"
