Chapter 232: Chapter 92 Grand Banquet_2
Several close relatives who maintained good relations also helped along, making conversations and creating a lively atmosphere by persuading others to drink.
As for the rules of persuading others to drink, they were diverse and everyone could find their own reason to either abstain or push others to drink. All this was Greek to Yan Fei.
But there was no fear.
Any rule that reached Yan Fei became much simpler.
If you say I have to drink first to show respect, no problem. How much should I consume? You say my wife following behind must also drink, that’s no problem either. One thing Yan Fei knew for sure was that a man could drink on behalf of his wife, and this rule was universally accepted.
Since I can drink on behalf of my wife, then tell me, how much should I drink?
At the start, Yan Fei’s parents and relatives who were helping were deeply concerned and repeatedly cautioned Yan Fei against drinking too much as there were many people left to celebrate with.
But after a couple of tables, they stopped advising him anymore. Xu Xiaoyan had been incessantly pulling his clothes, hinting to drink less. However, she too stopped doing that.
This guy basically drank whenever someone could provide a ’logical’ reason and never refused. He would completely drain each glass of alcohol without hesitation.
At this time, in the Sancha River region, the drinking customs at the tables were not very good; just urging others to drink more with the goal to get them drunk. As long as you could still lift your glass, you had to drink.
Can’t you see during the New Year, amid the heavy snow, bicycles abandoned on the roadside, people asleep in the snowy ditch; or those who left in the morning to visit relatives and only returned home in the middle of the night, completely dazed?
There was no shortage of instigators at the table, but there was one rule: whoever persuaded others to drink, must drink the same amount. Thus, when they faced a beast like Yan Fei, it was their unlucky day.
Originally, Yan Fei was worried about getting drunk. It’s true that he was accustomed to the smell of wine due to his daily exposure, but he had rarely consumed it. He occasionally sipped at it when his grandfather drank a couple of glasses before going to bed.
However, after drinking a few glasses, he found that there was no ill effect after it reached his stomach!
Normally, his stomach had an endless capacity when it came to food. Apparently, it was just as limitless when it came to alcohol. Regardless of how much was poured into it, he only felt a slight warmth after a while.
Latterly, seeing Yan Wen Hai couldn’t go on, Yan Fei simply took over Yan Wen Hai’s drink as well.
At this point, someone became discontented. Someone stood up and spoke, "If Xiao Fei is going to drink on behalf of your dad, then you have to drink twice as much. Drinking on behalf of your wife is fine, but if you’re drinking for your dad, you definitely have to drink double. Whatever you drink, we will drink half as much. You decide."
There were many people stirring things up, all of them demanding Yan Fei to drink twice as much.
Some were purely following the crowd, just to see how much Yan Fei could drink, while others were resentful, seeing a young man with a beautiful college student wife. Jealousy was only natural.
This kind of situation is common everywhere, there’s nothing to say about it. But the difference was while others served alcohol from a bottle, Yan Fei served it with a small wine jar.
So, without waiting for his parents to speak, Yan Fei directly lifted the small wine jar, "Alright, you can include both mine and my wife’s portions, no matter how much it is, whatever is left in here is it."
There wasn’t too much left in the jar, just over two catties of wine. Allowing everyone to see the amount left in the jar, he tilted the jar, pouring its contents directly down his throat.
It couldn’t be called drinking, it was really just pouring. From the moment the mouth of the jar reached his lips, his throat barely moved before the jar was emptied, having been gradually lifted higher until at one point it was turned upside-down.
The bystanders were all dumbstruck as they watched him pour the alcohol into his stomach. Only after a moment did they react, with the more experienced ones rushing to caution him against drinking too fast. They feared that the boy might end up hurting himself due to others provoking him!
Before anyone could stop him, he had already finished emptying the container. After he was done, there was no reaction. His stomach stayed just as flat as before. He picked up another container from someone next to him and started to pour. This time, he wasn’t pouring for himself, but for others.
Seeing his demeanor, the people who were egging him on earlier couldn’t help but back down!
They had no choice but to admit defeat. Their home-made liquor was smooth to drink and didn’t leave them with a headache afterwards. But it did pack a powerful punch and its effects were lingering.
Yan Fei could handle drinking like this, but who among the rest could follow suit? Few could walk straight out of the cattle farm’s gate without stumbling, let alone remain standing.
Having down more than two catties of alcohol, his toastmaking speed noticeably increased.
By the banquet’s end, most of the younger generation, i.e. the younger folks, those notorious mischief-makers who were easily egged on, had given up the game. After watching Yan Fei drink, they all quietly waited their turn, hardly daring to speak.
At each table, after Yan Fei had toasted and moved on, someone would inevitably tease a few individuals: "Hey, weren’t you the one boasting about outdrinking us?"
Or "Didn’t you claim you were going to challenge Xiao Fei to a drinking duel to make up for not finding a college-educated wife?"
The teased individuals didn’t say a word in response, merely lowering their heads to eat their food as if the remarks weren’t aimed at them.
No matter the occasion, there are always some unwelcome guests at a banquet.
They’re the type who forget themselves once they start drinking and won’t stop until they can no longer stand or their tongue is twisting. Then there are the ones who love stirring up trouble when drunk, equally no one’s favorite.
Typically these people love to brag about being able to drink two to three catties without a hitch. Today, however, after witnessing Yan Fei’s drinking prowess, they seemed to have lost all interest in proving themselves. All in all, it was perhaps for the best, as the banquet remained joyous and incident-free.
Of course, much of this was due to Yan Fei’s excellent preparations.
Unlike others, who would meticulously calculate the exact quantities required, he had simply slaughtered a fat pig in advance. Chickens and fishes were left to the chef’s discretion, along with other vegetables which he provided in abundance.
In fact, most of the vegetables were brought by those who came to collect the cattle dung. These folks were among the local villagers, many of whom were vegetable farmers. They wouldn’t be lacking such produce! Knowing that Yan Fei was preparing to host guests, they each brought a little something. Along with contributions from relatives and friends, there was more than enough to go around.
Admittedly, not many would be thrilled by the prospect of green vegetables these days. The real crowd-pleasers were the fat pieces of pork and the chickens and fishes. With fish swimming in a nearby pond and leftover chunks of pork on the chopping board, all the guests could count on schmoosing their fill, eating in straight-forward contentment.
A banquet where people get full just by eating meat is indeed hard to come by these days. Who wouldn’t be satisfied?
As for those who drank less because they didn’t dare, that was their problem. With large jars of wine available in the house, if one was too embarrassed to show off their low alcohol tolerance, who could they blame?
As the late afternoon approached, the guests finally began to head home.
They didn’t leave empty-handed, each family carrying at least a few taels of meat or fish, enough for a splendid meal. They could also take some leftovers home for reheating - it wouldn’t be considered disgraceful to do so these days.
Overall, everyone had a full belly and a good time, and the banquet could be declared a success!
Once all the guests had departed and the helpers had cleaned up the tables, chairs, benches, and canopies in the courtyard, the cattle farm was back to its serene state. Only the makeshift stove hadn’t been disassembled yet.
Standing in the middle of the empty space, Yan Fei looked towards that girl who had been blushing since noon. He suddenly felt that from that moment on, some things seemed to have changed, to have become different than before.
