Chapter 224: Chapter 86 Joyful News, Meal, Pig Tail _1
"Xiao Xingxing, are you trying to kill us?" Xiao Wen grabbed Xu Xiaoyan and bolted out of the crowd, only stopping once they were beyond the gate. She turned and yelled at Xiaoyan, "I really want to knock open your head and see what on earth you’re thinking!"
Even a man as blunt as Yan Fei could feel the eerie atmosphere within the crowd after she made that remark, let alone everyone else!
Hanging behind were her cousins, looking at Xu Xiaoyan as if she were some kind of deity. Just how thick-skinned did this girl need to be to utter such words under those circumstances!
The reverence towards college entrance examination in those years is unimaginable to later generations. Every single point a student scores relates to the expectations of one’s extended family and even several generations! Regardless of how well or poorly one performs, the moment they receive their scores, the emotions are absolutely indescribable.
Didn’t you see how some examinees, out of extreme joy or despair, had swollen eyes from crying? Her complaint about "how come I got such a high score" probably made those who didn’t perform well want to hurl bricks at her!
Luckily, Xiao Wen reacted quickly, grabbing her and running away at the first sign of trouble; otherwise, who knows what tragedy could’ve happened.
Eager to share the good news with their families, they exchanged a few words before splitting up and heading home.
Yan Fei, with his now officially a college student sweetheart, hurried back to the family members’ yard of the fertilizer plant.
But being the middle of the workday, there was no one around. Deeming the remaining time till the end of shift too short to waste on waiting, he hopped on his bike with Xu Xiaoyan and headed for a firecracker shop.
"What on earth are you doing?" Seeing Yan Fei make a beeline for the largest batch of firecrackers, Xu Xiaoyan had a vague idea of his intentions, simultaneously touched and concerned about the money it would cost.
"We’re celebrating getting into university with firecrackers, of course! Hurry up, boss, give me a few more batches!" Yan Fei stated matter-of-factly.
"We haven’t received the official admission letter yet; it’s not certain! And isn’t this overkill? Even those who got into universities in Yanjing don’t show off like this."
"What the heck do I care about what universities they got into! You got in, so I’m celebrating," Yan Fei retorted, swearing in front of Xiaoyan for once. He gestured for the shop owner to bag the firecrackers and began counting out bills.
It wasn’t cheap, and Xu Xiaoyan, filled with a mix of annoyance and amusement, playfully pinched him. However, her delicate fingers didn’t seem capable of causing much damage.
Having bought the firecrackers, they returned to the family members’ yard, where people were gradually coming back from work.
The moment he spotted his parents, Yan Fei set off the firecrackers without a word.
The sound promptly drew the attention of everyone in the yard. Yan Wenhai and his wife were initially puzzled but seeing their son setting off firecrackers and blush-faced Xu Xiaoyan beside him, they had a good guess of what must’ve happened.
But there was no need to guess; Yan Fei promptly reported, "Mom, Dad, Xu Xing got admitted to university. She scored way over the cut-off."
"Really? Show me..." Even though they had a slight premonition, the couple couldn’t hide their surprise and asked in unison.
"It’s true! Quickly show them your score!" Yan Fei beckoned Xu Xiaoyan, who was blushing profusely.
She handed over the slightly damp piece of paper she had been gripping tightly.
"Hmm, it’s indeed a high score, really high, over six hundred..." Lin Xiumei was half-clueless but knew enough to realize that the score was quite high, so she smiled broadly and admired.
Yan Wenhai knew much better; he said regretfully, "It’s a pity, with this score, she should’ve applied to our Provincial University..."
"Xu Xing was just complaining that her score was too high! She wanted to attend a university in our city, closer to home..." Yan Fei chimed in cheerfully.
On hearing this, his parents understood Xu Xiaoyan’s intentions. Seeing her even more embarrassed, their happiness increased even more.
Onlookers gathered, understanding the situation and congratulated them. Though many weren’t sure about the girl’s relationship with the family, it was clear this was a joyous occasion.
All those who had taken, or were about to participate in the college entrance exam, couldn’t help but feel a tinge of envy.
At this point, Yan Chao, Yan Fei’s younger brother, returned home with his schoolmates.
The kindergartners’ schedule was designed to cater to their working parents, which was extremely flexible. They mostly let kids leave when most of the residents were home. Sometimes, when the plant was busy or if the parents were unavailable, the kindergartens didn’t even let the children go home for midday break.
This left Yan Chao without any treats. Yan Fei was so ecstatic that he completely forgot his little brother, and immediately left with Xu Xiaoyan.
"Are you being silly again? It’s late, and it’s Xiao Xing’s first time at our house, aren’t you going to let her have a meal?" Lin Xiumei chided Yan Fei with a teasing smile.
Yan Fei turned his head and grinned at her: "We have to hurry back to tell her family too!"
After saying that, he revved the throttle, and shot off in a cloud of smoke.
"Oh...Slow down... This reckless child..." Seeing her son’s excitement, Lin Xiumei was at a loss, exchanging a bitter smile with her husband.
Yan Fei was racing down the sunny street on his motorbike, and arrived at Laowu Beef Restaurant in no time. He didn’t even get off his bike, drove directly up the steps, and yelled at the crowded room, "Fifth Brother, my daughter-in-law got into university, with a good margin! Once the admission letter comes, I’m treating you to a meal!"
Without waiting for a reply, he roared off on his motorbike.
Both were still inside! It took them a while to realize what he had shouted, with their patrons reminding them.
Fifth Brother was envious, "This kid, he’s bagged a university student as his wife!"
Fifth Sister-in-law snorted, touching her noticeably pregnant belly, "What now, you want to find another one?"
A few regulars at the restaurant began to speculate. When they heard the news, faces were filled with envy, but also a tinge of jealousy, "Look at that brat’s motorbike, his family must be nouveau riche!"
Fifth Sister-in-law scoffed at them, "That kid goes to school during the day and chases rabbits all night, rain, wind, or snow. In half a year he’s earned thousands, would you do that? Catching a rabbit hair would already be an achievement for you!"
Nobody made snide comments after that.
Yan Fei didn’t care about what people were saying, he flew back to the cattle ranch and immediately set off a big bunch of firecrackers. To the few people who rushed out at the noise, he yelled out the same news, then sped off towards Xu Xiaoyan’s house with her.
This fool, he hadn’t even thought of saying a few sweet words to his girl. He just kept smiling stupidly. Xu Xiaoyan knew his nature and didn’t try to stop him, letting him carry on with his silly antics.
Once they reached Xu Xiaoyan’s house, he calmed down a bit. He didn’t dare to set off firecrackers from his motorbike this time and let Xu Xiaoyan go inside and share the good news.
The old man who used to sell vegetables outside the Xu’s house had already moved to a different spot. Yan Fei waited awkwardly outside for a while, annoyed by the old man’s constant winks and nods.
When Xu Xiaoyan did not come out after a while, Old Xu did, and shouted at him, "What are you doing standing out there? Just come inside and eat already, are you guarding the door or what!"
Well, after being neighbors for over a decade, it was about time he ate at their place.
It was quite common for neighboring children to eat at each other’s homes at that time. But these two families were an exception. Xu Xiaoyan had occasionally visited his house, but Yan Fei had never stepped foot in their yard. He didn’t even know why; he just had a childhood memory of Old Xu always looking grumpy, which made him want to stay away.
It was indeed quite a big deal for him to finally eat at the Xu’s. Not an easy feat, that was for sure.
Of course, the meal wasn’t exactly pleasant. There were only a few people there; a certain girl was blushing and stuffing her face in embarrassment. Someone was over-enthusiastically chattering away and constantly serving him, two people sat at the side, trying to suppress their laughs, and one person was glaring at him angrily.
The meal was so uncomfortable that Yan Fei felt like he couldn’t tell his hands from his feet.
He managed to finish eating with a straight face and immediately made eyes at Xu Xiaoyan. Her two sisters who were sitting next to her burst into silent giggles. Xu Xiaoyan wasn’t a fool and knew he was uncomfortable. After clearing up the dishes, she blushed and told her family that they were leaving.
As she had been living on the cattle farm, her family could hardly object. Old Xu waved them off nonchalantly, "Off you go. Let’s discuss everything once the admission letter arrives..."
They would have to arrange the celebration for when the admission letter arrived. It had already been decided that they would celebrate both the engagement and university admission together, in a big feast.
Once they left, Yan Fei saw Old Ding was still there. The old man continued to wink at him, "Oh boy...showing up empty-handed at your in-laws’ for a free meal! Hey, what are you..."
The reason he was trailing off was that Yan Fei, without saying a word, had walked over and picked up a savory braised pig tail, wrapped it in an oil paper, and handed it to Xu Xiaoyan.
After that, he climbed onto his motorbike and raced off, leaving Old Ding mocking him amidst a cloud of smoke.
He was lucky to be able to grab a deliciously braised pig’s tail. It had been so long since he had one...
