Chapter 201: Chapter 67: Ten Rabbit Skins_1

Realizing that if he didn’t return soon, Xu Xiaoyan would likely start looking for him, Yan Fei decided to leave the circular island.

Leisurely making his way into the cattle farm, he immediately saw Xu Xiaoyan sitting on the bed in a pose, practicing yoga!

Upon catching sight of him, she prepared to ’tutor’ him, introducing him to the yoga she had just learned from the television. Then Yan Fei discovered, to his annoyance, that this girl could learn yoga from the television on her own!

Well, let’s not get too hung up on that problem.

As it approached bedtime, Yan Fei was simultaneously stewing meat in his little cabin on Vegetable Garden Island and pondering the issues on the circular island.

Just as he was planning to increase strength, he found a giant python. There was not much more to say about it, other than to think about how he was going to kill it.

But there was no rush. The python had just filled its belly, so there was no fear of not being able to find it. There was still plenty of time.

Actually, the Stegosaurus and Camarasaurus were also good choices.

No need to mention the Stegosaurus, its small head seemed somewhat lecherous. They were in a large group of about a dozen, likely no problem to kill one. However, only a few Camarasauruses had been found so far. What if one was killed and the two young Camarasauruses lost an adult’s protection? If they encountered danger, they might all perish.

It’s not known whether there are any other Camarasauruses on the island. If they were extinct, where would one find such a gentle creature as a mount?

Absorbed in thought, Yan Fei filled his stomach and decided not to think about it any longer before heading to bed.

No matter how energetic, rest is necessary. After being busy for a few days, he should have a good rest, particularly as tomorrow was market day. He wanted to see if there were any suitable fattened cows!

Having eaten breakfast and spent some time with Xu Xiaoyan, as he observed those headed for the market starting to walk into town, Yan Fei prepared to go to the Cattle Market.

There was no need for Xu Xiaoyan to go to the Cattle Market. It really wasn’t a place for girls. Besides, after she had been there once, without Yan Fei needing to talk her out of it, she was practicing yoga in the inner court and didn’t mention wanting to accompany him.

Just as he was stepping out of the gate of the cattle farm, he looked back and stopped.

The figure bobbing up and down on the bicycle coming over the bridge, wasn’t that his cousin, Lin Haihu?

This guy was two years older than him, and would start his third year of junior high when the school year begins. However, his height takes after his mother, and he is quite a bit shorter than Yan Fei. Sitting on a bicycle, he couldn’t reach the seat, so he had to suspend himself over the crossbar. With each pedal, he appeared to be bouncing up and down.

It wasn’t until the bike arrived beside him that he realized Lin Haihu was not only riding the bike this way but also carrying somebody - it was his cousin, Lin Lingling.

Lin Lingling was sitting at the back of the bike, holding a large bag of items. Besides the sesame oil and sesame sauce sent for Yan Fei, there was something very familiar, and he couldn’t help but ask, "Why are there so many wild rabbit skins?"

"Not many, just ten!" Lin Haihu said casually.

"I mean, how did you get them?" Yan Fei asked, already having an uneasy premonition.

"Isn’t it the wild rabbit you asked to bring back? The rabbit had nine babies in one litter, and with the parent rabbit, that’s ten." Lin Lingling said irritably.

Of course.

Yan Fei muttered to himself, took the sesame oil and sesame sauce, and headed into the cattle farm with the pair.

Behind him, Lin Lingling was still complaining. "Just days after giving birth, they said there was only one parent rabbit, which was a waste to keep and ate it. They started eating the young rabbits as soon as they grew up, one per week at first, saying there were too many males. After they had finished the males, they said the others were also useless and ate them. No amount of persuasion worked."

Yan Fei drove the four large dogs approaching them, subconsciously glancing at his cousin. He seemed to not recognize this cousin of his anymore.

She was the type who didn’t stand out in a crowd and usually didn’t do anything out of line. She usually followed others’ leads, rarely expressing her own opinions like this time. It was rare to hear her voice such strong personal emotions.

She was three years older than Yan Fei and half a head taller than her brother, Lin Haihu. Like most girls of her age, her hair was in a simple ponytail. She had an average appearance, save for her rather large eyes, which resembled Yan Fei’s uncle. As she talked, her large eyes clearly expressed discontent and disappointment.

Yan Fei didn’t have much to say. The reason he initially gave the wild rabbit to his grandmother was that the rabbit was pregnant, and he changed his mind at the last minute and didn’t eat it.

At that time, he thought his uncle’s family could raise it well, and in the future, having a lot of rabbits could be an additional source of income. Now, as the young rabbits had all grown up and were eaten, saying anything was too late. After all, only the skins remained!

Lin Haihu was unhappy listening to his sister’s grievances. "It’s as if you didn’t eat any. Why didn’t you eat? Was it there just to be fattened up for fun?"

"You..." Lin Lingling was complaining about being interrupted by her brother, instantly irate. "What do you know?! Raising these animals will make money! Haven’t you seen that even Yan Fei has started raising pigs and cows to make money now, so what’s stopping us from raising wild rabbits? Isn’t it because you are always clamoring to eat meat, all you do is eat, eat, eat, you’ve killed all them, so why shouldn’t I get to eat...."

Speechless, Yan Fei thought, ’What do you mean ’even I know how to make money by raising pigs and cows’? Are you praising me?’

Lin Haihu smirked, "What money can be made from raising wild rabbits? Unless you’re like Xiao Fei who can catch so many rabbits to sell, otherwise how long would you need to raise them by yourself?"

Lin Lingling glaring at him resentfully, "Do you know that one wild rabbit can turn into ten, and next time? At the very least it could become fifty, and what about the next time? How many can it become if we take good care of them in a year? Do you know how to do sums? All the nine baby rabbits we had this time have survived. Have you read about this? The reproduction rate of rabbits is nearly catching up with that of mice, do you know that?"

When Lin Haihu heard his sister say this, he became indignant. "Oh, you know so much, don’t you? Show off how many books you’ve read? I have never heard of anyone getting rich from raising rabbits. If you’re capable, why don’t you raise them?"

"It’s because nobody has really tried to raise them!" Lin Lingling retorted angrily .

Seeing that the two were about to start arguing again, Yan Fei interjected, "Sister Lingling, which school did you apply for your high school entrance examination? When is your letter of admission coming?"

Lin Lingling, caught off guard, glared at her brother and turned to Yan Fei, "I applied to nursing school, it’s still early to receive the admission letter! By the way, Xiao Fei, weren’t you about to go out? What were you going to do?"

Yan Fei replied, "I’m going to see if there are any suitable cows to buy."

Upon hearing this, Lin Haihu, also no longer obsessed with the argument with his sister, exclaimed in surprise, "Xiao Fei, have you struck it rich? Are you buying cows one by one? You’re amazing. I wish I could do that!"

You?" Lin Lingling sneered. "You could have as many cows as you want and they still wouldn’t be enough for you to eat! If it wasn’t for you always clamoring for meat every time you come home over the weekend, there wouldn’t just be these few pieces of rabbit skin left!"

"Are you going to sell this rabbit fur? Isn’t this thing worthless? I asked before and nobody wanted it. It’s not even worth the trouble, not even worth the price of two beer bottles." Seeing the two preparing to start another argument, Yan Fei had to interject again.

"Who says it’s worthless? I’ve asked around, it used to be worthless, but it’s different now. A piece of wild rabbit fur can be worth almost two dollars now, and the ones I have here are worth almost twenty dollars. My mom said that I can keep any money I make from selling these. Aren’t there people who are just jealous because I’m about to make some money? Hmph!" Lin Haihu smugly remarked.

"Dream on, our dad said you have to give me half, I need to buy things too!" Lin Lingling retorted angrily.

"What can you buy? Isn’t it just to buy some random books to read? Now that you’ve graduated, what are you still buying books for?" Lin Haihu looked disdainful.

"Are you two riding a bike to the market?" Yan Fei interjected.

"No, I won’t ride his bike. Who knows if he will just ditch me halfway. We almost fell into a ditch earlier, I was scared to death."

"If you’re capable, why don’t you ride it? Isn’t it just because you’re afraid to carry anyone?"

"..."

Yan Fei couldn’t help feeling fortunate that his younger brother didn’t argue with him. No matter what, as long as he’s given something tasty or fun, his younger brother would immediately turn into a little angel, being more obedient than these dogs they were raising, always doing as he was told...

Maybe that comparison wasn’t very apt? He was confused by the arguing sibling duo. Luckily, they were almost at the town entrance, and he could soon part ways with the two of them.

On his way to the cattle market, Yan Fei did harbor some underlying dissatisfaction.

No wonder people said, ’The county has sent out poverty alleviation funds, those who sell meat are not afraid of counting money late at night’. This means that the people who received the poverty alleviation funds from county spent it all on meat; those who sell meat have become rich, and are happy to count the money late at night, they are not afraid of staying up late!

One can still say that they lack insight and even with money, they don’t know how to get rich. But this uncle of his was different, wild rabbits were brought to his home, and even had litters, the fact that all nine could be raised was honestly quite impressive, but in the end they all ended up being eaten...

Wild rabbits are indeed not easy to raise, but now that all nine have been successfully raised, he honestly admired that fact. But if you lack breeder rabbits, why not just say so! It would just take some effort at night to catch a few more, but the way they do things now, Yan Fei truly has nothing to say.

Thinking this, he arrived at the cattle market, and decided not to think about it anymore.

Each family has its own way of doing things, let them do as they please!

From far away, he saw Xiaohei running back and forth like the wind in the cattle market. It seemed that as long as he was in the cattle market, he would forever look busy and hurrying. On the other hand, his brother Heizi was a completely different story. No matter what work Heizi was doing, even if he was willing, he would inevitably complain, as if he didn’t want people to think he was not smart enough.

Seeing Yan Fei from a distance, Heizi waved at him, indicating for him to wait. He then turned to say a few words to the person next to him, and hurriedly walked over: "Xiao Fei, I was guessing it is about time you should come, why are you so late today?"

"Oh, I was delayed by some relatives who came over. Did you find any suitable ones?" Yan Fei replied with a smile.

"Don’t worry, I’ve been keeping an eye out for you! There definitely are some. Just follow me! You’re not concerned about spending an extra hundred or so dollars. Wanting a good cow is not hard..." Xiaohei said, while motioning Yan Fei to follow him.
