Chapter 188: Chapter 60: Thousands and Millions of Unusual Things_1
It was after dark when Yan Fei grabbed his shovel and left the cattle yard, preparing to dig a hole near the roadside to erect that big stone as a sign for his liquor store.
Xu Xiaoyan was holding a flashlight, helping him decide the best location. As long as it was far from the turn in the road, that’d work. They didn’t want it too close to the curve in case anyone cycling took a tight turn and crashed into it.
Once they picked the spot, Yan Fei started digging.
He was annoyed in the afternoon when the men had hauled the stone back into town, showing off. He had wanted them to just dump it, but they ended up keeping it.
However, when he heard their suggestion to use the stone as a business sign, he thought about Xu Xiaoyan having laughed at his disorganized small liquor store. Nowadays, no trace of the two characters he had drawn on the outer wall was left. No one knew there had been characters there before.
It was perfect. Straightening this stone and writing the characters ’liquor shop’ on it would make it an official sign.
When they brought the stone back, too many spectators had followed. Yan Fei didn’t want to show off any more, so he declined the request from Heizi and others to demonstrate his strength by lifting the stone. With the support of Ma Yongming and Pang Fa, the stone was left right there.
There had been a big crowd. If only Heizi and the others had been there, Yan Fei wouldn’t have minded performing a bit. But these guys gave up lifting the stone even before they got to the town, looking as tired as dead dogs. Only by calling in the spectators to help in turns did they manage to bring the stone back.
This resulted in more people coming along. Towns weren’t short of idle hands, with many strong men looking for an excuse to join in the spectacle. Unlike the future when villages lacked able-bodied people, sometimes unable to find assistance to move a few bricks, left only with the old, frail, ill, disabled, and young.
Because of the crowd, Yan Fei was spared from making dinner. Some people didn’t want to impose and eat his food, while others deliberately helped Yan Fei by refusing to stay for dinner, resulting in the entire crowd dispersing before dinnertime.
Now that it was dark, and the road was empty, it was the perfect time for Yan Fei to quickly erect this ’signboard’, and get ready for tomorrow. He planned to buy some paint and write the words ’Liquor Shop’ in large characters that could withstand wind and rain and appear decent.
Even though she had seen Yan Fei carry this large stone so far, after witnessing the ordeal the others went through in the afternoon, Miss Xu Xiaoyan was still amazed seeing Yan Fei lifting the stone into the dug hole.
Yan Fei would then brace the stone, while Miss Xiaoyan rushed to use the shovel, filling in the hole with prepared gravel and fragments of bricks. Yan Fei also helped, alternating his feet to push the dirt inside – faster than the girl with a shovel.
Seeing Miss Xiaoyan working with the shovel, Yan Fei said, "How about I teach you some martial arts? You’re a bit weak indeed."
It was an offhand comment. Miss Xiaoyan was in the midst of shoveling and she suddenly stopped. There wasn’t enough moonlight and it was pitch black. Yan Fei couldn’t see that not only was her face flushed, but her neck was red as well.
"What’s wrong?" Yan Fei asked her, puzzled.
"Oh? Nothing..." Miss Xiaoyan seemed frightened and started shoveling again in a flurry, only now she was somewhat absent-minded.
It was not until they filled in the hole, and Yan Fei tamped it down with his feet, and they were heading home, that Miss Xiaoyan quietly asked, "Did you hear what my second sister said this afternoon?"
"I heard it!" Yan Fei responded calmly. "You didn’t think about how I hunt rabbits at night. I can hear a rabbit hopping in a grass burrow, let alone you guys talking so loud."
Is their voice that loud? It’s just because he’s extraordinary.
But the girl is indeed his wife, so he doesn’t mind letting her know some of his special abilities. As long as he doesn’t scare her with any drastic transformations, it’s okay if she finds out that his hearing is particularly sharp.
"Are you worrying that I’m too weak? Who can compare with you, so strong and sturdy. Even if I continue to practice, it’s unlikely I’ll become as strong as you..." The girl’s voice gradually softened and by the end, it was barely louder than the hum of a mosquito.
"Learning some Kung Fu and improving your physical strength is always beneficial. Besides, you’re going to school outside, and I won’t be able to stay with you all the time. If you know some Kung Fu, I’ll feel more at ease," said Yan Fei frankly.
"Hmm, you’re right," The girl’s voice became louder, probably influenced by Yan Fei’s attitude. She nodded vaguely. Now that they’d entered the house, she took advantage of the dim light to steal a few glances at Yan Fei, ensuring his face was calm before she continued, "Alright then, wake me up early if you’re up tomorrow!"
"Sure!" Yan Fei responded succinctly.
That night, Xu Xiaoyan didn’t insist on Yan Fei lying beside her bed talking to her. He was planning to visit a few islands anyway, so it seemed they were on the same wavelength.
Yan Fei didn’t notice the girl’s cheeks flushing in waves after she lay in bed.
She was thinking about what Xu Yue had said in the afternoon. Seeing her elated expression, Xu Yue had teasingly warned her with a serious face, "That silly boy is so strong and sturdy, you with your delicate physique shouldn’t celebrate too soon, lest you can’t keep up with him and can’t even cry about it!"
Although the girl was in school and at an age where she understood the affairs between men and women, it took her a moment to understand what Xu Yue was insinuating. So she had muttered to Xu Yue’s retreating figure.
Despite being in school, the girl jogged and exercised regularly. Coupled with a good nutritional intake, her physical health was much better than her peers. However, when compared to an extraordinary being like Yan Fei, she did appear frail.
Earlier, Yan Fei’s comment had unintentionally led her thoughts down certain paths, making her too embarrassed to raise her head. It was only his candid attitude that made her realise she was overthinking.
After all, Yan Fei was always busy and didn’t have the opportunity to mix with peers and be exposed to certain ’bad influences.’ The biology teachers usually skipped over Chapters related to physiological hygiene, and these topics weren’t usually examined either.
Given Yan Fei’s carefree nature, he seldom paid mind to anything but his work. Being with his childhood sweetheart, he never dwelled on any ulterior thoughts.
Perhaps it was Yan Fei’s honesty that influenced the girl and caused her to shy away from these subjects too. This was why she frequently invited Yan Fei to sit by her bedside, talking into the night without a second thought.
Now that she had thought about these things, she naturally developed a maiden’s coy tendencies. Though she knew Yan Fei was still young, remembering the tense muscles in his arms when he was lifting rocks and how he would avoid wearing a shirt when it was hot made her blush furiously under her covers. She resolved, starting tomorrow, to learn boxing from Yan Fei and strengthen her physique!
There could be millions of reasons to learn martial arts and achieve countless objectives, but the girl’s reason, well...that was truly unique!
