Chapter 1736: Chapter 823: Law and People - Capital Journey_2

Once the dance performance was over, Xu Xiaoyan changed her clothes and happily ran down to ask him, "How was the dance?"

"It was really good. Did the school mess up the program lineup? Even if it couldn’t be placed at the beginning, it should have been the finale," Yan Fei said indignantly.

"I also think we did really well." Xu Xiaoyan nodded seriously, and had always had issues with her dorm’s meticulously prepared dance not being able to be the opening or closing act. "It’s just that the outfits were a bit thick; why isn’t there heating in this hall?"

"Yeah, yeah." Fei agreed with his wife and didn’t express more opinions.

The few smart guys around seeing Yan Fei like this couldn’t help but laugh to themselves.

Xu Xiaoyan was still dissatisfied after venting: "Forget it, I don’t want to watch the rest of the program either, let’s go!"

The girl rarely lost her temper, and it’s understandable. For this program, the girls in her dorm even hired a dance teacher, practicing every moment they could, except for class.

Xu Xiaoyan was better off, not having practiced much even though she was the lead dancer. But others had suffered greatly; rumor has it they practiced late into the night. After all the hard work, it didn’t look like they’d receive any placement. It’s no wonder she was disappointed.

"Let’s go!" Yan Fei obviously had no objections, and certainly didn’t need to watch the rest.

"Xiao Xingxing, where are you going?" Just as the two reached the entrance, someone rushed over from behind. "Aren’t you waiting to hear the results?"

"I doubt we’ll get any good places, so why wait!" Xu Xiaoyan said angrily. "It’s been pointless effort for a long time; those judges don’t even look at the performances of those about to leave school. It’s futile to wait."

"But still..." Bai Xueling, who had run past trying to persuade her, saw their stance and immediately changed tone. "You two are in a hurry, what are you planning to do?"

"We’re planning to go to the Capital!" Xu Xiaoyan hadn’t initially reacted, then blushed after answering. "Oh, Lingling, what are you saying! Your mind is always in the gutter... We’re planning to drive through the night and see the flag-raising tomorrow!"

"How am I thinking bad things?" Jiang Xueling chuckled. "Isn’t it you who misunderstood? Anyway, I won’t bother you then, hurry up and go! If Chen He comes to pick me up later, I’m not waiting either!"

"Hey, what’s Chen He doing picking you up so late?" Xu Xiaoyan said mischievously. "Didn’t you say he had some activity that would keep him late? Putting aside work for you, that’s dedication!"

"Xiao Xingxing, hurry up and leave!" Jiang Xueling’s face turned red too. "Not like you; Boss Yan accompanies you everywhere... Alright, alright, are you leaving or not? If not, I’ll call the girls over!"

"Humph, I’ll let you off today!" Xu Xiaoyan proudly tilted her head. "When I come back, I will show you the photos."

"Remember to bring some Capital specialities!" Jiang Xueling shouted from behind.

"Sure, I’ll bring you back Stinky tofu." Xu Xiaoyan laughed, agreed, and pulled Yan Fei to run.

The two laughed as they ran to the car, all the luggage had been prepared long ago, and even water and snacks for the road were ready. The arrangements at home were also made, Wang Lei was working there now, so just helping feed the dog for a few days would suffice.

Xu Xiaoyan jumped into the car and started gossiping before Yan Fei even started driving: "Hey Yan Xiaofei, do you think Lingling and Chen He have already... you know? I heard they’re planning to get engaged, and once they have the diploma, they’ll marry."

"Already done what?" Yan Fei feigned ignorance, starting the car and slowly driving away.

"Humph, which you know what?" Xu Xiaoyan seldom gossiped, extremely dissatisfied with Yan Fei’s attitude.

"Hehe, what’s wrong? Are you envious?" Yan Fei teased, winking comically.

"Ignoring you!" Xu Xiaoyan glared at him, lying back sulkily, looking out the window without speaking.

"Alright, go to sleep. I’ll wake you when we arrive." Yan Fei drove carefully to let the wife sleep undisturbed.

Truthfully, Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t sleep, after a while she couldn’t resist: "Will there be many people watching the flag-raising tomorrow? I also want to visit the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, and the Summer Palace, Xiang Mountain. Do the red leaves still bloom there now?"

Xiang Mountain red leaves are a fixation for their generation—studied in elementary school textbooks.

"Red leaves are gone, but the Great Wall is still an option. Also, I can take you to visit the famous Capital Courtyard House," Yan Fei thought and said. "It’s Meng Si’an’s home, a whole Courtyard House. You can tour as you like."

"Really? That’s so fortunate." Xu Xiaoyan said, full of longing.

"What’s to envy, not much different from our house. His is a civilian house, ours is a noble’s abode," Yan Fei boasted.

While his comment was accurate regarding house specifications, as Yan Fei’s house was indeed a building, it was an unfair comparison location-wise; theirs was in the Provincial City, theirs in the Capital, not comparable.

However, Yan Fei’s house wasn’t bad either; from stone bases to tiles, even the two grand stone lions added later were sourced from genuine old buildings.

They continued chatting and Yan Fei began driving steadily on the highway; thanks to the car’s good performance, Xu Xiaoyan soon started dozing off. Eventually, she curled up on the back seat and pulled a blanket to sleep.

Once they reached the hotel Yan Fei had booked in advance, he woke his wife and checked in directly.

Early next morning, before dawn, Yan Fei got up and tidied up, ordered breakfast, then woke his wife up.

After breakfast, they headed towards the renowned large square everyone in the nation knew.

At that point, the sky was still dark. Winter flag-raising was later than in summer, they waited for a while.

The square’s Honor Guard was nationally famous; when a line of dashingly good-looking soldiers carrying the flags walked by, almost everyone in the square was drawn.

Conversations stopped, people busy with other things paused too.

Honestly, having watched flag-raising on TV more than once, seeing it directly on-site nevertheless was slightly moving.

Every action polished meticulously, movements skilled yet stable, paired with universally familiar stirring music, instantly elevating the scene to unmatched solemnity.

A song sung from youth, the rising red flag, turning back, the gentle yet dignified elder on the turret observing it all.

Xu Xiaoyan involuntarily grabbed Yan Fei’s hand and stood resolutely until the flag reached its highest point, and music stopped.

In fact, everyone in the square stood similarly until the Honor Guard left with uniform strides, then the square naturally regained its vigor.

"Really amazing!" Xu Xiaoyan said once people left. "So dashing."

Yan Xiaofei was displeased, rolling his eyes: "Let’s go to Forbidden City. Going early means no crowd while buying tickets. You brought the student ID, right? There’s half price with it."

"Got it, got it, let’s go..." Xu Xiaoyan perked up upon hearing.

Forbidden City!

Just imagining already felt mysterious; filled with emperors, lived-in concubines, so many eunuchs... Hmm, better skip that!

Everyone saw the turret photograph in school books but hadn’t seen what’s inside.

Finally visiting, Xu Xiaoyan was almost impatient!

Then... they realized arriving way too early, Forbidden City was still closed.

Quite disappointing, but no choice...
