Chapter 173: Chapter 49: Thunderbolt on a Sunny Day_1
On her way home, Xu Xiaoyan was full of energy and excitement.
Her heart was bouncing along with her physical status, like a wild antelope in her chest.
When she got home, her parents and sisters were still eating. And there was a woman sitting by side, whom she didn’t acknowledge. She told everyone she already had meal outside, then with excitement tightly held back in her heart, she nonchalantly entered her bedroom.
As soon as she stepped inside, she let out a gleeful gasp, dumped her small backpack, and threw herself onto the bed, her cheeks rosy from indiscernible thoughts. She then couldn’t help but spat at herself, realizing how foolish she seemed. She covered her blazing face with the quilt, and started giggling to herself.
Wrapped in the comforter like a little girl, rolling around, she was filled with an overwhelming sense of happiness that was impossible to suppress, no matter how hard she tried.
Until Quick Feet, her second oldest sister stormed into the room, twisted her fiercely a few times, and then scolded her, "Have you lost your mind Ni’er? What are you doing? Why aren’t you listening to what is being said outside?"
"Quick Feet, you’re going to twist me to death, it hurts so much..." Xu Xiaoyan grimaced in pain, and complained with a frown.
"Serves you right, you’re in pain. Can’t you hear what father and Granny Dazui are discussing? Why don’t you use your brain a bit. You’re so foolish!" Second sister reproached her.
"What are they talking about?" Xu Xiaoyan saw the seriousness on the face of her second sister, got serious herself and climbed up to sit on the edge of the bed, and casually threw this question.
Simultaneously, she started eavesdropping on those outside.
She heard Old Xu speaking: "... that guy from the Zhao family is not right. Even their business is not booming anymore. I think they don’t have much money. Old Liu’s family is well off, their Hot and Spicy Soup always attracts people, their business is getting better and better."
Then the voice of her nervous mother came from outside, "Old Xu are you out of your mind? Old Liu’s son has a speech problem. You are pushing Ni’er towards a pit of fire...."
Before she could finish her sentence, she was rebuked by Old Xu, "Stop interfering in this, women have no clue about these issues. Their business will never be outdated, I think, it will only get better with time."
"That’s right! Mrs. Xu, you got it wrong. What’s there to fear about speech problems? He’s still a kid, he will gradually improve. And their two-story western-style house is one of the best in the county. They are quite rich!" A woman’s voice came, her tone was flattering to an extent that could instantly annoy anyone.
This woman chalked incessantly, "Old Xu surely has a better vision. Once your families are united, considering your daughter’s beauty and her university education, it wouldn’t be a problem for them to afford another two-story western-style house for you."
Even though Mrs. Xu had been scolded, she couldn’t help but whisper, "What do you mean, he’s young? He’s even older than Ni’er..."
Obviously, in their house, Mrs. Xu didn’t have much say, her voice was no more than her murmuring. No one paid attention to her.
"No way." That was Yanfei’s eldest sister speaking. "We have already been to college. It’s not fair to push Little Ni’er into this so-called ’pit of fire’. We can still do some part-time jobs, so that Little Ni’er can go to college."
But Old Xu’s voice echoed again, slightly irritated, "What’s all this noise? Do you think it’s easy to fund your college education? Look around, whose family doesn’t have a new house now, except ours? Your mother and I can’t even afford meat at home. You shouldn’t be involved in this matter. What I say is final."
Again, Mrs. Xu muttered, "The boy from the neighboring blacksmith shop is not so bad right? Both of them get along quite well..."
"I told you not to speak anymore, and yet you still do?" Old Xu erupted once more. "He’s just a kid, and do you think he has what it takes? And besides, his cattle farming shenanigans are just squandering his parents’ money. Despite his state, you think he is fine..."
"Was that Granny Dazui’s voice just now?" Any joy Yanfei felt before had already flown out of the window, and her heart felt like it was plummeting into a bottomless abyss. Upon hearing about Yan Fei, she was kindled with a glimmer of hope once more. However, after hearing her father’s words, her heart sank completely, and with a pale face, she asked her second sister.
"Yes, that nosy woman is up to no good again! She already came by a couple of times when you weren’t here the other day. She’s been incessant about who’s rich and who’s not, and it has got our father all confused!" Her second sister replied angrily.
"It’s not that she’s confusing our father, rather he must have planned it all along!" At this moment, Yanfei felt utterly hopeless.
The conversation outside went on, Granny Dazui continued to describe a few other families, suggesting Old Xu weigh his options. However, the ones she was discussing weren’t the real choices; the richest was definitely from Old Liu’s family.
This Granny Dazui happens to be a slightly famous matchmaker in the small town. Her reputation may not be stellar, but her silver tongue could wake the dead, and she did manage to get quite a few couples hitched.
In those days, people respect the notion that family issues are not for public discussion. Regardless of whether the marriages are happy or not, outsiders rarely know. At least most of the couples appear quite content when they were outdoors.
Yanfei might have been away attending high school, but she heard some of the stories regarding the families that Granny Dazui had brought up. All of them were from the small town, so she had a rough idea about their situations.
Let’s not talk about the other families; even the wealthy Liu family that Old Xu has his eyes on, Yanfei knew about them.
The Liu family runs a breakfast stall. Now that people have started to enjoy a better lifestyle, their small business also thrives, making them one of the first families to own a house in the small town. However, their only son, much like Yan Fei of the past, didn’t make the best impression.
As you can imagine, if this son has a similar reputation to Yan Fei’s past, what kind of person could he be? He can’t be considered exceptionally dim. He went to middle school, though he didn’t attend much, and ever since then, he has been helping out at the stall. He looks fine until he opens his mouth—stuttering aside, even drooling uncontrollably.
Even with such a son, the wealthy Liu family, with their comfortable lifestyle, are still picky in selecting a daughter-in-law, so much so they haven’t managed to select one until now.
"Madam Xu, have you ever considered this: the Liu family has only one son. Everything they own will go to your daughter in the future. Isn’t this the same as having it in your own home?"
Granny Dazui’s voice kept hammering on, mixed with the occasional resentful replies from Yanfei’s eldest sister. But Old Xu was unyielding, Granny Dazui wasn’t giving Yanfei’s eldest sister any attention, and continued persuading Mrs. Xu and Old Xu instead.
"I don’t care anymore. I will object regardless. If you are indeed going to proceed with it, I will drop out of school next year. I have already said this, I can work with my second sister as dishwashers to pay Third Ni’er’s tuition. Are you all so desperate for their house? Can’t we afford it ourselves in the future?" Yanfei’s eldest sister seemed at her wits’ end and started yelling.
"Bang!" A loud slam on the table resonated.
Then came Old Xu’s roaring, "None of you get to make decisions for this family, what I say goes. If you don’t want to study, you can go die somewhere else..."
Then came a low conciliatory voice from Mrs. Xu, "Eldest, you shouldn’t say anymore. Aren’t we in a dire financial situation at present? We are too old to struggle anymore, and all of this is for your own good, isn’t it?"
"For our own good?" Mrs. Xu’s words shattered Yanfei’s heart into pieces, and she could no longer hold back. She murmured to herself, then let out a loud sob. Pushing past the curtains, she ran outside, sobbing with her hands covering her mouth...
